PREVIEW: Green Lantern Movie!

Its not much, but Entertainment Tonight has about 30 seconds of footage from their Green Lantern preview they are doing next Tuesday November 16th. And we are bringing it to you! Oh man this makes me so excited for the movie!

REVIEW: Secret Origin

This year is the 75th anniversary of DC comics. With it has come special books, variant covers, and toys. But what would an anniversary of this magnitude be without a documentary detailing the history of the longest running comics company around today. Secret Origin: The Story of DC Comics is narrated by Ryan Reynolds and takes  a look at DC Comics from its creation in the late 1930’s up to today. Many creators are interviewed in this including Jim Lee, Neal Adams, Denny O’ Neil, Geoff Johns, Neil Gaiman, Gran Morrison, Walt and Louise Simonson, Dan Didio and many others.

The majority of the film and most in depth focus is around the creation of the Trinity (Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman) along with the start of the Silver Age. Past that it touches on other milestones like when Denny O’ Neil and Neal Adams did Green Arrow/Green Lantern and touched on real world problems, the Superman movie by Richard Donner, and the creation of Vertigo. Once you hit the late 80’s it really jumps forward and only touches on a couple of brief events like the Death of Superman and Kingdom Come. All in all I thought this was a really interesting DVD.

My only complaint is I wish it was a little longer so they could have touched on more of the stuff that happened in the 90’s and 00’s. But that is just a minor complaint. I would still recommend checking this out, especially if you are a big fan of DC comics like myself.

Here is a trailer for the movie:

REVIEW: Green Lantern Trailer

A new robot, Rassilatron, got a chance to see the Green Lantern trailer early and wanted to share his opinion of it with you. The tea leaves I’ve read seem to indicate that this trailer will be debuting on the new Harry Potter film.

So, I’ve always been the reluctant one to take surveys, especially those who promise virtual money. Imagine my surprise though, as I’m taking a movie survey and they ask me to watch this movie preview and give my opinions on it, and the first thing I see is the Green Lantern symbol! Being a huge GL fan, I nearly flew out of my seat as I began laughing excitedly. Well, more like Nelson from Simpsons “Ha Ha,” as I know no one has seen this publically yet mean I know, but I could not resist and it was quite unexpected. After watching this preview, my impatience for summer of 2011 just increased a hundred fold.

I have been waiting for a Green Lantern movie ever since special effects started using CG. I mean come on; GL is the perfect superhero movie for something like this. From what I can tell, it is not going to disappoint. There is one scene in the preview where Hal Jordan (Ryan Reynolds) makes a giant fist and gives a mob of bad guys a giant right hook. Always a favorite construct, I do hope though we see more complex ones, like a giant f-16 surrounding Hal, always thought it was cool when he did it.

There have been rumors of this movie being like training day with Sinestro (Mark Strong) showing Hal the ropes. Strictly from this preview, I can not say if they are going to do this as I didn’t see one scene with Sinestro in it. I know he is cast and is in the posters, but strictly from the preview, they do not seem to be focusing on him to greatly. I can say the villain in this first one seems to Hector Hammond (Peter Sarsgaard). Not a favorite villain of mine personally, he always creeped me out as the obsessed stalker, but he may work with the direction it looks like they are taking for a genesis story.

This is the one part which has me worried; they look like they are going to portray “The Man Without Fear” as a man who has to overcome fear. Now, I know they of late

have been pointing to the fact Hal does have fear he just has the ability to overcome it in the comics, but the one thing about Hal is he never really showed it. There is a conversation he has where he mentions what the ring said about being without fear, and the guy he’s talking to gives him a look and Hal says unsurely, “I know right?” All in all though, I can see how they can use Hector Hammond to have him overcome fear, I mean the guy gets into your head. I just really hope they do not focus too much on him overcoming fear, they need to stay true to Hal’s strong, confident persona.

This said, the chemistry between Hal and Carol Ferris (Blake Lively) seems really good, and the banter seems right on. One thing I have to say about Ryan Reynolds is he plays the cocky, playful romantic well, and seriously, who does not like Blake Lively? One reason I think they casted him in this role in the first place. When it comes to Hal’s love life, he has always seemed to have an air of “I’m Hal, I rock, you know it, let’s have some fun”. To quote Robin from “The Batman” cartoon after he found out his day job, “Even your secret identity is cool!” This is Hal Jordan in a nutshell. This of course translates into other aspects of how Hal deals with his new powers as well. There is one scene where he shows his friend how he changes costume and the conversation goes like this, “That’s cool!” “I know!” “So what do we do now” “Go fight some bad guys?” It is like what would happen if a ten year old, or a frat boy got powers.

All in all, I have to say , this is going to be a must see movie next summer. I know as for me I will be first in line to see it.

New DC rides coming to Six Flags

Every other year I get to choose where we go on our family vacation. Last time I drug the wife and kids through the tiny town of Metropolis Illinois for the Superman celebration and it was a great time except my families overwhelming fear that we’d be back again and again. Well, now the Clobber-Tron clan has a lot more to fear!

If I get my way we’ll be heading to Six Flags Magic Mountain to ride the 3 new planned rides, 2 of which are DC Comic themed!

Superman: Escape from Krypton
This ride looks fun and I’m a big Superman fan so I’ll climb on this as soon as I get to the park. I promise to take pictures and write up the experience if I survive the trip.

Green Lantern
No doubt planned to promote the movie and sell merchandise, this ride looks like a terrifying cross between a traditional roller-coaster and a rickety old carnival ride. I will stand in awe of how scary it looks and hopefully OVERCOME GREAT FEAR.

Giffen and Levitz Revisit The Legion Together

This news broke over at DC’s blog, The Source.

Okay, I’m just gonna geek out and shout it to the heavens:

PAUL LEVITZ AND KEITH GIFFEN ARE REUNITING ON THE LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES!!!

And I get to edit it! Whee!! You have to understand what this monumental development means to me personally.

Y’see, Paul and Keith transformed the Legion from an enduring DC franchise into one of the most popular and dynamic comic book series of the 1980s. With an entire 30th century future world at their command, they crafted the most innovative, break-the-mold superhero world anyone had ever read up to that point. Their names were spoken in the same breath as Frank Miller, Chris Claremont and Wolfman/Pérez.

For me and the many other fanboys of Generation X, Paul and Keith did the seemingly impossible: They made me a Legion fan. For life.

I admit, back in 1985, my 14-year-old self felt names like “Lightning Lad” and “Cosmic Boy” sounded really silly. No way I was going to invest in characters with those names, right?

Then I somehow stumbled upon TALES OF THE LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES #326, which affordably reprinted Paul and Keith’s all-new LEGION series a year after their original release. This one reprinted issue #1. It must have been a slow week for me to even crack open the cover. It began with a collection of psychopaths called the Legion of Super-Villains who each took a blood oath to kill a Legionnaire. One of them tortured his own sister by jolting her with massive amounts of electricity. Another literally melted a lowly waitress alive with a molten kiss, just for the fun of it! Sick stuff. And yet, these Legionnaires refused to back off. I was really impressed. I wanted to know more about these guys, even if their names were “Saturn Girl” and “Ultra Boy.” They stopped being silly and became as serious as a heart attack.

Then Keith left the series shortly thereafter, and Paul flew solo for a long while. Then Keith came back to do the last year on that series with Paul—and I defy anyone to tell me issue #53’s “The Trial of Brainiac 5” isn’t awesome—and then Paul left the series for Keith to do solo.

That was 1989. The two never collaborated on the Legion again. That is, until this December, when they come together again on the oversized LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES ANNUAL #1. It introduces an all-new, all-psycho Emerald Empress—and just hearing the twisted stuff they have in store fills this Legion fan with utter glee.

In fact, Keith just sent me his first pages, and they look gorgeous. He’s mixing Kirby with his ’90s Legion style and a modern sensibility. I look at the Xeroxes on my desk, and I know it’s REAL. It’s happening.

It reminded me why I’m a Legion fan in the first place.

P.S. You know what’s REALLY weird? This is Paul and Keith’s third “LEGION ANNUAL #1.” They did one in 1982, 1985 and now in 2010. Third time’s the charm, they say!

Ardian Syaf Joins “Birds of Prey” as its New Artist

Starting in December, the Birds of Prey will get a new member – to their creative team, that is.

Hot off a stint on GREEN LANTERN CORPS and BRIGHTEST DAY, Ardian Syaf steps in as the regular artist on the series, joining forces with regular writer Gail Simone. And Syaf is stepping in just in time, as the series continues to kick things into high gear, with a new arc starting in December titled “The Death of Oracle.”

BIRDS OF PREY Editor Janelle Siegel was kind enough to show off a few pages of Ardian’s art, and it seems she’s as excited as we are about the new addition:

“I’ve been a fan of Ardian’s work for quite some time, so I jumped at the chance to have him on Birds of Prey. He’s a great fit for the book because he is an immensely talented artist with a gift for storytelling and action and he’s also great at drawing beautiful women! We couldn’t ask for a better combination than that for the kind of stories we’re telling in Birds of Prey right now.”

Oh, and about that art…

Green Lantern GloBalls!

In either a preemptive strike to promote the Green Lantern movie or just some random marketing from Hostess, the company has revealed their latest co-branded cake-creation, Green Lantern GloBalls!

I could take the low-road and say things like, “Who wouldn’t want to put Green Lantern GloBalls in their mouth?!” or, “Bite into these balls to get a blast of creamy filling!”, or even, “Green Lantern’s GloBalls look tasty and delicious and you can tell there is a lot yummy of cream in them but the weight of them in you hand!”

But I refuse! I choose today to take the high road and just tell you that Green Lantern GloBalls are Coconut and Marshmallow covered Chocolate Cakes with Creamy Filling and it looks like if they aren’t already there, you can find these in your local grocer soon!
