Toy Fair Ghostbusters Collectibles!

Holy crapola, lots of awesome stuff coming out soon. A few weeks ago at the The Nurnberg Toy Fair Hot Wheels unveiled some pretty slick Ecto-1 replicas. There are going to be two versions, a 1/18 and a 1/43 scale. A few years back, Joyride had released a die cast Ecto-1 that was 1/21 scale and roughly 20 dollars (depending on where you got it). The 1/18 scale coming out in September will be $115, so we can expect a much higher quality collectible. Lots of moving pieces and such.

Moving slightly forward in time to the 2011 New York Toy Fair. Of course the booth I was most interested in hearing from was from Mattel. They were showing off some figures we’ve seen before, like the Retro Action Real Ghostbusters. And lots of new stuff:

• Movie Masters twelve inch Ghostbusters 2 Winston and Venkman
• Egon in lab coat with the Library Ghost
• Vinz Clorth with a few different heads, Terror Dog shell, collander, pizza and a glass jar of popcorn
• Club Ecto’s Marshmallow covered Ray Stants
• Ghostbusters 2 Winson with a slime blower

I am pretty stoked about all these. The 12 inch two pack is a bit pricey considering most already own Venkman, but to make up for that it comes with a boat load of accessories. I’m really excited to see all of these and review them. Thanks to Proton Charging for letting us know about this super cool stuff.

Also thanks to Toy News International for getting these super sweet shots.

Lee Eisenberg talks Ghostbusters 3

Lee Eisenberg is one of the writers working with Harold Ramis and Dan Aykroyd on Ghostbusters 3. Gene Stupnitsky being the other. Currently Lee is doing a series of lectures titled “Great Beginnings: Conversations with Alumni” at Connecticut College. While talking with The Day something came up… you guessed it, Ghostbusters 3.

“We’ve been working really closely with Ivan Reitman for a couple years on it. Dan Aykroyd has been really involved. Harold Ramis has been very involved – we’re sharing a story credit on it with him. Then we reworked the script. I mean, that script went through a lot of rewrites, and it kept getting, we think at least, tighter and funnier. It took a little bit to really understand the tone of a movie like ‘Ghostbusters.’ It’s really scary when you’re writing characters you grew up on. … The last thing you want to do is disappoint.

“Right now, we have a script we haven’t worked on probably in a couple of months, and we’re waiting for Bill Murray to read it. People seem excited about it, and the studio seems high on it. … We’re very proud of it. We worked really hard on it, and I think it’d be a really fun movie.”

So nothing new really. Every one is still waiting on Bill to say, “Alright, let’s do this.” Personally I think he will eventually “cave”, or Sony will try and push it in a different direction. At this point it sounds like the studio and every one but Bill Murray is invested in seeing this happen. Hell, even The Atlantic (seen below in the first movie’s montage) is pleading with Murray to go with it.

Make Ghostbusters 3, Bill. Please? The long-awaited, long-long-long-rumored third installment could start shooting this year—but only if you agree to appear in it. Ivan Reitman, on a recent publicity tour for No Strings Attached, said you have been sent a reworked script. They even used your idea about Venkman dying and coming back to haunt the cast, too That’s badass. You’ll be like Swayze in Ghost, dude. With Sigourney Weaver as your Demi Moore. Pretty please? Maybe you could turn the whole thing to your advantage. Back when the studios were fighting over who would make the first Ghostbusters, you used that leverage to get The Razor’s Edge financed. You could do the same now—agree to make the threequel of the studio will finance a film you do care about.

While a little misinformed (Venkman won’t be dying and coming back as a ghost), it’s still pretty awesome. Thanks to Proton Charging for letting us know about this.

UPDATE: Matty’s Ghostbusters Line

There has been a surprising lack of details regarding this year’s Ghostbusters Figure releases. Especially considering some of us signed up to buy the first six already. The first figure released this year was Courtroom Peter Venkman, which I reviewed recently. Finally Matty has shed a little more light on their plans for this year:

Hey Ghost fans,

I know everyone has been itching from some news for the line. Obviously we are gearing up for NYTF where we will update collectors on all of our Matty.com toy lines, but to help get some needed info out there, here is the latest scoop.

1: The next figure will be Vinz Clortho in March. Also in March will be the Club Ecto Marshmallow Mess Ray which ships only to Club Members and was covered by the cost of membership!

2: After Vinz will be a new figure in May that will include a new pack in Ghost.

3: Winston with slime blower will be out in July.

4: We also have 2 GB2 12″ 2-packs coming out this year (that was a lot of 2s!). The first will be Winston and Peter in April. Both packs will come with a TON of 12″ accessories including protonstreams!

5: The PKE meter did great. We are looking into other prop replicas down the road. No plans right now for a re-release but it might happen in time (such as in a movie year).

6: The Retro Action RGB figures should be hitting Toys R Us and “emerging channel accounts (i.e. online retailers) soon. They will not be available here at this time.

Okay, so that is the catch up on releases. To hit a few points fans have brought up and are concerned about:

A: The line is doing great! We have a total of 7 figures coming out this year including 4 variants of the GB boys and 2 new characters (one is Vinz!). Plus a really amazing SDCC item to reveal in April-ish.

B: We do hear all the requests. More Ghosts, more equipment, more proton streams, removable packs, more characters and so on.

There is a lot planned. We do need to spread out key releases and key refreshes to keep the line going strong. We’ve already front loaded the line with the iconic movie 1 versions of each character. With a little time, we’d like to get to most if not all of these requests.

C: There are more re-releases of older figures planned. We won’t offer re-releases every month, but much as we did for Cyber Monday last year, you can expect the main guys to be up for sale again.

D: We know there is a lot of demand of Real GB 6″ scale figures. The catch with that is based on the baseline sale of the 6″ movie style line, the demand just isn’t there (well the vocal online demand is, the sales number are not). GB Classics sells well, but at this time not at the numbers that would justify a 6″ RGB expansion which requires A LOT of new tooling.

We know fans want RG. Personally, I do to. But in the end, it is pretty accepted that the movie style is overall more popular (meaning not just the hardcore fans, the casual fans need to purchase too to keep the line going and for the casual fan the movie is more popular). And if the movie style is not doing the numbers we need to see for an expansion, expanding into a more tooling intensive (and overall less popular) style is not a wise business model. (I am not saying Animated is not popular, just that it is not AS popular as movie style).

Personally I really want RGB toys, especially for the vintage nods we could do. It might be something we can get to in time. Right now we are doing 1-2 newly 100% tool’d figures a year (like Vinz Clortho) and 4 partially tool’d figures in movie style. All of the RGB figs require almost 100% new tools and we just don’t have the resources right now for this (based on sales).

So to wrap up, do keep those suggestions going! We want to deliver product GB fans are going to love and we need your feedback to do that. I will continue to be most available on the “Ask Matty” section of this board. If you feel like GB info is not getting out there, just post a question here and I will try to answer. That is the best way to get direct info answered (but it is not a forum for asking about unreleased figs etc.. do check out the “tips” post before posting!)

See you in New York for Toy Fair! (I love this town!)

Scott

Man I cannot wait for some of these. Thanks to GhostbustersNews.com for posting this up!

REVIEW: Courtroom Venkman

Alright, alright. This is the first figure released under Matty Collector’s Club Ecto. For those not privy to what that is, basically you tell Matty to pull aside one figure for you and ship it before they’re up for sale. In turn you promise to buy six months worth of them. Which is good for nerds like me that complain about their site locking up every time a figure is released. This version of Peter is also the first Ghostbusters 2 to be released (not including the Toys ‘R’ Us box set).

While most would dismiss Ghostbusters 2 as a shitty movie, I (of course) disagree. Although it’s not nearly as good as the first, it still has a lot of charm. The courtroom scene with the Scoleri Brothers being in my top five reasons to watch this movie. So you can imagine how excited I was when they announced this courtroom version of Venkman packaged with one of the Scoleri Brothers.

Essentially the body is the same as the Walter Peck figure with a different jacket and no vest. The paint on this figure is an improvement from previous versions of Pete. You’ll notice the straps on the new figure popping more than the slimed Peter on the left. The face also has better flesh color, less pale, and his smirk seems to come through better. Like with all of the figures so far, lots of great articulation and well weighted.

As previously mentioned, Peter comes with the pudgier of the two Scoleri Brothers. The details of the sculpt are wonderful. From the nasty smile on his face to his shirt busting at the gut. The painting on this figure is wonderful. He is also semi-translucent for a nice ghostly effect. Mr. Scoleri the first full fledged ghost we’ve gotten. Sure, Slimer and the subway ghost have been released, but they aren’t nearly as cool as this guy. “What could make him cooler?” You might ask, well let me tell you.

I would have gladly paid for just this Scoleri figure on his own. Currently just being added in, his articulation isn’t great. He bends at the shoulders and turns his head a little. He comes with a second set of feet that make him look like he’s flying, which is cool… but he doesn’t have a stand to place him on while using those feet. Unless you are planning to hang him with some string or something, they’re pretty much useless. With more articulation perhaps they could’ve packed him with an electric chair and possibly the lawyer he drags out of the courtroom.

All in all I feel like this is one of the best figures to date. I was getting a little worried after the last few rereleases with extra accessories. Matty currently has a few left, but they won’t last. Go get ’em now if you want ’em.

And now, for all of your viewing pleasure, the courtroom scene from Ghostbusters 2:

Ghostbusters: Sanctum of Slime

Good news Ghostheads, even with Atari having trouble financially, they are pushing out a sequel to Ghostbusters: The Video Game. That’s the good news. The bad news, so far none of the original ‘busters are comin’ back to provide their voices. It doesn’t sound as though the original four opted out. It seems like Atari is going a different (less time consuming and costly) direction. The game will revolve around the rookie from the last game, and most likely his franchise.

More good news, it’s going to be a DLC game for Xbox, PS3 as well as PC download. Because of this, I think the community will be more forgiving of the game. Sanctum of Slime will be a top down co-op ala Gauntlet Legends. This will be playable over the internet or locally. Giant bosses requiring team work are promised.

Personally I’m hoping for more of the same with the concept. Shoot, bust and trap. But I’d imagine it’ll be more along the lines of the classic arcade game. Just shoot the ghosts until they blow up, rinse and repeat. Without Aykroyd, Murray, Ramis and Hudson this game will be lacking the spark that Ghostbusters: The Video Game had. The comedy, scares and fun will probably be watered down to repetitive fun. Which is fine since its DLC. This will be hitting Spring next year.

Thanks to Game Hunters for the scoop.

Ecto Replica Gets a Police Escort

I’m jealous. And it’s showing. Some of the big shots in the Ghostbusters fan community were cruising with MC Chris around New York City and got a police escort to Times Square.

Joining us in the Ecto-2K were the Denver Ghostbusters and rapper mc chris (and his assistant bothans!). We were ushered into Times Square and were immediately surrounded by hundreds of screaming fans. Check out the video for the ride up, and our debut on Times Square.

Stay Puft Marshmallows are finally here!

My dear lord, ThinkGeek has done it again!  I don’t know how those crafty sons of bitches always manage to read our collective geek brains and create so many “must have” items, but I thank them for it while my wife wipes her tears with our credit card bills.

Their latest offering that has me salivating is actually a food item, and that food item is from none other than the 1984 film, “Ghostbusters”.  As you can see, everyone’s favorite fictional marshmallow brand, “Stay Puft” is not offered in the same packaging as seen in the film, but I love that the highly caffeinated marshmallows are presented in a reusable “keepsake” box!  How can a geek go wrong!  So load up on graham crackers and chocolate bars and get ready to cross the streams for some gooey treats!

Gobble ’em up over at ThinkGeek

*EDIT*  It has been brought to our attention that the Stay Puft Marshmallows are produced by none other than the always awesome Omni Consumer Products.  And can also be purchased at their official site.

INTERVIEW: Ernie Hudson

Recently we got the chance to interview the great Ernie Hudson. Being the huge Ghostbusters nut I am, naturally the interview got pushed on me. Currently Mr. Hudson is involved with a film titled Doonby:

Sam Doonby, a mysterious, handsome drifter gets off a Greyhound bus in a small Texas town and finds work at Leroy’s Country Blues Bar where his great musical talents make him very popular, especially with Laura, the beautiful but spoiled daughter of successful doctor Cyrus Reaper. Sam always seems to be in the right place at the right time to avert disasters befalling the town and its people until suspicion and jealousy drive folks to ask who he is and where he comes from.  Even Laura starts to question him so now he disappears as quickly as he came and things start to go badly wrong. His rejection results in terrible shocks for the whole town, not least for the doctor and his family as Cyrus’ past comes back to haunt him.

Below is the conversation Ernie and I had about Doonby, as well as a few other things:

BSR!: What’s new in your life right now?

Ernie Hudson: Right now things are going well, obviously the film Doonby that John Schneider and me that we did in Texas. That’s the that’s happening most relevant right now. I also do have a reoccurring on the Secret Life of a Teenager, and you know, just staying busy doing Law & Order last season. I didn’t get picked up this season. And I’m always looking for something fun and exciting to be a part of.

Sure, so you play Leroy in this upcoming Doonby movie, correct?

Right, yah. He’s a blues musician who decided to settle down and runs a night club. I hire Jon’s character and it’s about friendship and the music. To me he’s an interesting character because he’s a guy just trying to reconcile that thing of which you love to do and how do you make peace with the woman that you love. And how do you hold things together but still be who you are. And somehow be responsible for all these people who surround your life. I really liked the character a lot, it was a great character.

That’s wonderful. How soon does this movie come out?

I think they are looking at the Fall. They haven’t given me any exact dates. I think they are shooting for a Fall release, I’m told. I’m not totally sure yet.

Oh OK. Now, I was wondering, throughout your career you’ve gotten a chance to play a lot of different characters and roles. From a paranormal investigator to a warden. Is there any character or role that you wish you could play, or haven gotten a chance to just yet?

I’ve always sort of considered myself to be pretty, you know, not the average guy who does the day in and day out stuff. And I love those sort of slice of life stories. And I’ve never really done a lot of that. For me it’s always being sort of the head of something. But just the guy that raises the family. The simple stories. Most of my actor friends, they get those roles and never get to be the guy in charge. The guy who’s doing something dynamic. But, you know, most everything I’ve had a chance to do.

That’s really interesting, I feel the same way about some of the comics that I come across. I tend to enjoy the slice of life stuff quite a bit more.

Right, yah. That’s kind of interesting. I think you learn a lot. But, I mean, I like the action stuff. That’s always fun to do. And I’ve done some of that, I’d like to do even more. And of course it’s always fun when you do the big movies. But I also like a lot of the small movies, like this movie Doonby. It’s a small movie about people and relationship and how we mess them up and how we correct them. That sort of stuff is kinda neat. But I’ve been fortunate enough to do a lot of different kinds of characters.

Now, obviously one of the bigger franchises you’ve been involved with was Ghostbusters.

Yah, yah the Ghostbusters. That’s something that the fans have been very loyal to. And really have kept it alive, and I’m really really proud of to have been a part of that. Because I really do think that it touched a vein. No matter where I go I still see people who build the outfits and build the cars. That’s really cool. But then there are other movies, The Crow. It’s unfortunate what happened, but I’m very proud to have been a part of that movie. You look over your career and there’s a few that people remember and still enjoy. Most of it you do and it’s over. It has its moment and then its gone. But some people still hold onto it.

Sure. I wanted to ask you too. It’s been just over a year since that Ghostbuster’s Video Game came out. That whole experience must have been pretty wild. Did your sons get a chance to play the game? What was that like to go through?

Well, yah, the video game, I’m actually glad because when they called me about it, and I’m like, “OK, is everyone going to be involved?” And I found out that even Bill Murray was going to do the voice. It was kinda cool. It was kinda like a reunion. And then of course, when you do a video game you are never really sure. Because it’s really in the hands of other people how it’s going to turn out. My son, when we were putting it together, my third son came with me and they gave him a chance to play the game before it was actually complete. So he was really jazzed about that.

That’s really cool.

Both my younger boys have played the game and love it. And the fans, I was really happy to see the fans really responded to it well. And felt that it was very much connected to the movie. As opposed to being something like the video game that came out years ago that didn’t quite do it. So I was very happy that we got the game out. I thought the game might push the possibility of a movie. To make it happen. I don’t see any signs that that’s true right now, but I know there was a renewed interest once the game did well. I think the fans liked it a lot. I’m glad we at least got that out there.

Oh definitely. I loved the game, and I know a lot of people are excited for the possibility of a sequel for the game or for Ghostbusters 3.

Right. Yah, I hadn’t thought about a sequel of the game. But that would be cool too. I think it’s just one of those movies that really, now that people are introducing it to their kids their kids respond to it. It holds up over time. You don’t think about it at the time that twenty plus years later people would still be talking about it and watching it. That’s kinda nice.

Oh yah, I’m definitely a pretty big Ghostbusters fan. I’m about 25 and my friends will bring their kids over, or my nieces and nephews, and they’ll see the memorabilia stuff I have, and they immediately recognize it. Which always kinda blows me away.

That’s very very cool. I don’t know why we haven’t set aside whatever is going on and made the third one happen.

Are you kind of on the outskirts of the talks and all that jazz?

Over the past year or so I’ve talked to the main players. I’ve talked to Sigourney Weaver. I’ve talked to Bill, Danny, Harold and Ivan Reitman. Everybody is like, “Yah, we want to do it, but…” And that’s the “but”. Getting everyone to agree with what needs to be done. I think Bill especially wants to make it something exceptional. What that means to him may be different to what it means to Ivan Reitman or Danny Aykroyd. I know everybody wants to do it. But getting them to agree on a script [is the key].  For me, I think if we just get a script together, so much of it happened on the moment of the set that it’ll be fine. But that’s just my opinion. I’m the last guy *chuckles* that has any input. But I’d love to see it happen.

Yah. And it definitely seems tough since there are so many different hands in that pot trying to make that decision.

That’s right, yah.

It’s nice that Sony has been pushing for it.

I think that becomes a problem. Because when you get the studios involved… In the first one we were kind of left alone.  And that’s why I think it came through so strong. We were making this movie, and it was our movie. And I think even with the second one you started to get a lot of people wanting certain things. Wanted to make certain things happen as opposed to really making a movie. So I would imagine this is going to be even worse. But we’ll see. I’d love to see it happen, but like I said I don’t have any input into it.

It’s pretty well known that Dan Aykroyd believes heavily in the paranormal and all that stuff. What’s your stance on the subject?

I believe that there is – I don’t believe life stops when our body stops. I believe this body is an instrument that we use to have this experience. And when this experience is over we shed the body. We move on. I don’t think consciousness or awareness ends just in this dimension. That implies to me that there are other dimensions that we don’t have access to in this present form. But I think there is a possibility that you can cross over. I think there are some people that are very intuitive, I think there are people that can experience things. But I think there is a barrier there that is not meant to be crossed so I don’t go out of my way to seek out an experiences [to do that]. I don’t want to be visited by *chuckles* you know, dead relatives.

*Laughs* Sure, not something you are looking to go experience.

Yah, no. In fact, I get invited a lot because of Ghostbusters. People will say, “We’re going on this hunt. And we’re going to spend the night”. And I say, “You know, I’m not really interested in that”. But some people are fascinated by it. And I think its definitely there. I think if you are open to it, and receptive to it, and not afraid of it. I think you can have those experiences. I’m having a hard enough time dealing with this experience. This is enough for me. I’m sure I’ll get to the next one in due time. I’m just not fascinated in say the way that Danny Aykroyd is. He’s really really very curious about it. I think it is very sincere, which is why I think [Ghostbusters] turned out the way it did. Because I think you could see he has a genuine interest in that. But I don’t. I’m not fascinated by the Exorcists whatever, you know? I think a lot of people that grew up in a very strict religious background, like me as a little kid… That stuff is a little scary to me on a certain level. So that’s part of the reason why I don’t seek that out. I’m not comfortable with that. Some people don’t have that background, so it’s a lot easier for them.

Yah, I can definitely understand that. Well, I’ve got just one last question before I let you go. Our particular website focuses on nerd news and reviews. And everyone has their speciality. I nerd out with Ghostbusters and comic books. But then, for instance, my Dad is nerdy about cars. Or my brother about sports. Is there anything in particular that you geek out about?

Well, you know, I guess… I’m not exactly sure how to describe it because there is a – you’e asked me about ghosts and I’ve explained that. But I do believe there is a spiritual connection to a greater awareness. Whatever you want to call that. And I find that really fascinating. I read a lot of books, I meditate. Because I do want to make that connection. To become aware of that. I do believe there is a greater connection that is consistent in all the dimensions that we are connected to. I find that fascinating. So it’s a little bit different than the ghosts that comes and blows up your house *chuckles*. But I do think there is a connection and I do find that fascinating. So its not the religious background I grew up in. I’m not tied to that social thing. But I do believe there is a connection that we are all a part of and I am fascinated by that.
