Old Cast & New Cast Confirmed for Ghostbusters III

With Kill-Tacular-Tron enjoying newly-wed bliss currently, I will go ahead and cover the Ghostbuster beat a little. Over the weekend Harold Ramis spoke to MTV about his new film, The Year One, and mentioned a little tid bit about the new Ghostbusters movie:

Ramis promised that all the old core players will take part in the updated version, including Bill Murray (Dr. Peter Venkman) and Dan Aykroyd (Dr. Raymond Stantz), who co-wrote the original films. “We’re all going to be in it in different kinds of roles,” Ramis said. “We’re going to be the sage mentors. There are going to be young Ghostbusters.”

At the moment, Ramis is waiting on a first draft of the script, which is being penned by Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky, two writer/producers on “The Office,” who also wrote “Year One.” “Gene and Lee, both of whom I mentored, are now writing the new ‘Ghostbusters,’ ” Ramis said. “I’m consulting with them, as is Dan Aykroyd and [original director] Ivan Reitman.

“Bill Murray is just waiting for the truckload of money to arrive to get him out of his office,” Ramis joked.

So, I guess just in case there was any doubt…

Ghostbusters Dev Blog #5

This particular post has a lot to do with the multiplayer:

Serving All Your Supernatural Elimination Needs
For Ghostbusters Multiplayer we wanted to include featured locations from the Single Player game, but adapt them for Multiplayer use. All of the maps are designed to suit a majority of job types; it was critical that we allowed enough space for more enemies, more players, and more action! Threewave has some of the best level designers in the business and their expertise was critical in this regard.

Refining the different Job types took a long time. We had a good idea of how we wanted each to play but since we had no real network code for several months, our prototypes changed a lot over time. Once we were able to test the different Jobs, we quickly iterated on the rules and came to some solid decisions on what we felt was the most fun.

We also soon discovered we needed a few extra things to keep players challenged in Co-op Multiplayer as compared to the single player game. Four “live” Ghostbusters ended up completely destroying the AI ghosts! Teamwork was something we needed to focus on; in the Single Player game the other Ghostbusters help you, we wanted to make sure players did better by working together in Multiplayer.

Over the course of prototyping and development we decided to introduce limited ammunition and powerups; this choice really allowed us to reward teamwork and create some unique Multiplayer “Ghostbusters” technology items, such as the Proton Accelerator and the Ghost Shrinker.

We also added some unique Multiplayer AI “aggro” behaviours to challenge players even more. Some of these include ghosts that go berserk or even split in two when angered.

Persistent online ranking, automatic difficulty scaling and Most Wanted Ghosts to find and catch were added to keep players coming back to play again and again.

In Ghostbusters, ghost wrangling and trapping is one of the key elements players do over and over. The first time we tried Multiplayer wrangling, we knew we were on to something fun. In the Single Player game, if there are more AI players holding a ghost, the less the ghost struggles. We emphasized and added to this feature for Multiplayer Ghost Wrangling. If players work together, ghosts go down faster, and everyone gets a better score.

UPDATE: Ghostbusters Tutorial Stage

Our friends over at Proton Charging had the scoop on this new footage:

The gameplay trailer has some amazing sights, particularly the various weapon types (BOSON DART!), but the trainer level has everything you want – Bill Murray dialog, the destructible environment, using the throwers to wear a ghost down, slamming them to get them into the trap, overheating packs, dodging ghost attacks, the ecto-goggle/PKE combo, and even the suggestion that – as you’d expect – walking into someone else’s stream isn’t a good idea. As well, we get a taste of how the movie soundtrack will be used in the game – it works really well!

Update: Ghostbusters 3

Cinema Blend posted an update about the Ghostbusters 3 news:

Judd Apatow’s name has been attached the rumors about Ghostbusters 3 since they first began, with all reports saying he would be the producer for the film written by The Office writers Lee Eisenberg and Greg Stupnitsky. Now the production has gotten so close to actually happening that Production Weekly is listing it– and wouldn’t you know, Apatow Productions is right there in charge.

I know some of you don’t care for or have faith in Judd Apatow, but I do. Judd brought back good rated R raunchy comedies and got rid of their sissy PG-13 cousins.

Update: Ghostbusters 3

Dan Aykroyd was in Boston promoting a new House of Blues. While answering questions for the Boston Globe, Ghostbusters 3 got brought up:

[Comment From Tom] Dan, I’m extremely excited for the HOB to be back in its birth-city!! I will be attending many shows. On a side note, and I’m sure you get these questions a lot, so I apologize in advance…Ghostbusters 3? I’ve heard that the writers of the Office are currently penning a script? How is this coming along, and should we look forward to this movie seeing the light of day? Thanks Dan!

Dan Aykroyd: Script is commenced early summer. Hope to be in production by late fall 2009

While this does not guarantee that the movie is going to happen or start shooting this Fall. These rumors have floated around for years… but it certainly feels a lot closer.

Master Replica Drops Ghostbusters License

Master Replica announced that it was dropping the Ghostbusters props, well after the prototypes had been made and shot for advertising.

As a fan, I wish I could reassure everyone that GB is still on for MR. Unfortunately, it is with deep regret that MR has decided to cancel the plans we had with Sony for Ghostbusters. While I cannot get into specifics, I can tell you on a personal level that we cannot afford to give Ghostbusters prop replicas the justice and treatment they deserve and I apologize for any frustration or disappointment this will cause any fans. Rather than hold on to the license and wait for what seemed inevitable, we’ve decided to make the announcement today. Thank you for your understanding.

I know from experience, as well as research, that a high end fan made Proton Pack can run upwards of 1500 dollars. If not much much more depending on parts, sounds and accuracy. Where as a trap is probably closer to 150 or 200 dollars. With the economy in the slump that it is, I’m sure MR couldn’t make a decent Pack that didn’t cost a fortune. Maybe their license with Sony was to release “x” amount of props. Otherwise I think they could have gotten away with the trap and PKE meter.

Maybe Obama can help MR out with this in his stimulus plan…

Update: Ghostbusters Figures

Toy News International had the scoop from the New York Comic Con. I’ve included a few photos of the prototypes from their story below:

And those packs are screen accurate… trust me.

Ghostbusters the Game Blog

IGN is going to host a development diary on their site. Hopefully they update this regularly. Here’s a little snippet:

So he looks across the conference table over his impressive beard at us. Pauses. Then he says, “It’s Ghostbusters. We’re going to make a Ghostbusters game. The first really good one.”

And the other one, who for the first time since we met has paused talking for almost two consecutive minutes, adds this: “And we think you’re the right guys do it. You up for it?”

Nobody says anything for a long time. They think that after all the buildup and mystery maybe we’re disappointed, that maybe we’re trying to assess the fastest way of out of the room. But that’s not the case. The fact is that Brendan is sitting in stunned silence and I’m just trying to keep from swallowing my tongue. Mark Randel (Terminal Reality President & Chief Technologist) is taking it better: he’s just near-catatonic.
