Salt Lake Comic Con: Gaming Room

Among the cosplay, the exhibitors, and the panels of Salt Lake Comic Con was a mostly undiscovered gem hiding on the convention floor, or rather, next to it. Just to the north of Kid Con was a moderately sized room that, once entered, almost felt out of place. Not because of any of the content, it fit in the theme of the three day spectacular nicely, but because it was calm and quiet, relaxed.

It was called simply, the gaming room, and was filled with table top games, video games, miniature painting, and more. I kept an eye out for the room as I made my way around the convention Thursday and Friday but never saw it. Finally on Saturday I asked the lovely volunteers at one of the information desks and was directed there immediately. I was told to walk through Kid Con and continue north, I did so and still almost missed it. Directly north of Kid Con was a hallway with a couple of tables, a handful of attendees, and some abandoned pizza boxes. Surely this can’t be it, I thought before continuing forward. Then the hall opened up onto a room and there I found haven.

.

I wish I had found the gaming room earlier; it was a welcome break from the chaos of the rest of the convention. To the left of the entrance was a considerable game library where you could check out a selection of table top games to play at no charge. If you liked any of those games you could buy them from the vendor next to it. Attendees were also encouraged to grab a free blank miniature and try their hand at painting it. On the right end of the room were oversized board games you could play while standing along with a large projector displaying video games. “Super Smash Bros.” was in play while I was in the room.

.

While the room would have been perfectly comfortable for a casual gamer, that wasn’t all they had to offer.  Competitive games of “Dungeons & Dragons” (among others) were scheduled almost hourly. If you didn’t have a chance to check out the gaming room during the 2014 festivities, I recommend you locate it quickly next year. The availability of free games and the quiet environment will be a welcome escape from the mobs.

The New 3DS Designs Are Available For Pre-Order

During the GameStop Expo Nintendo announced 3 new skins for the 3DS XL yesterday and they became available for pre-order through their respective retailers today.

The first to release will be the Smash Bros. System in Red or Blue, which releases September 19 at the usual retail of $199.99. You can snag one of these to prepare for the October release of Smash Bros.

My personal favorite is the NES skinned system available exclusively through GameStop. It will retail for the standard $199.99 and will be available Oct. 10, 2014.

The final design is the Persona Q limited edition which will be available November 25, 2014 for the same price as the other special systems. It is also a GameStop exclusive and does not come bundled with the game.

Do any of these new designs tickle your fancy? Or will you be holding out to see if the NEW 3DS hits shelves in the U.S. next year? Sound off below!

‘Murasaki Baby’ Looks…..Disturbing

The PlayStation Blog, has posted a hands on for a new title hitting the PS Vita this fall. “Murasaki Baby” is a touch-only puzzle game, that has you guiding the oddly lovable Baby through a dark world. Solving puzzles involves manipulating objects in the environment, switch backgrounds, popping other monsters balloons and more. Unique titles like this serve as a constant reminder to why I love video games. Trailer below.

Sony Q1 Report Shows Huge Lead

IGN is reporting that Sony’s first quarter report is out. This report details sales from April – June 30 of this year and has some impressive numbers to counter the abysmal turnout from 2013. The game and network division of the company is reporting 2.5bn in sales which is attributed to the successful launch of their flagship console the PS4.

The report doesn’t show individual numbers, but shows a combined 3.5 million units in Q1 across their console lineup.

Microsofts same report showed the Xbox selling 1.1 million units in Q1 giving Sony the 3:1 lead to start 2014. It is worth noting, however, that Sony does have an additional console on the market to help with these sales numbers. It is also worth noting that the turnaround this year vs Sony’s 2013 numbers Last year q1 showed a loss of 16.4bn, while this quarter had a profit of 4.3bn. Looks like our consoles will be here a while.

Spooky Fun With ‘Paranormal Investigation’

There is a certain kind of feeling that any person has when enjoying a game. It’s a bit of delight, a touch of challenge, an appreciation for the strategy, and a pinch anticipation because of chance. All of those factors create a recipe for enjoyment that is unique to each game. Too much of any one of those factors and the game can be totally out of balance; too few and the game isn’t any fun, it ends up being simple to the point of boredom.

“Paranormal Investigation” by Touch Paper Press has quickly become a favorite because it’s balanced, it has a ton of variety of play, and the average game takes less than 10 minutes. The game is a four player card game based around the idea that each player is a paranormal investigator searching to unlock the mysteries of the unknown, suckering in another patsy or pointing out that the laws of science are the answer. The developers created a game with quick rounds for groups or as a filler, but they also wanted the game to have a high replay factor. While testing the game they geared the development toward a different game play experience in every game but with solid mechanics that remain the same.

Each player is a paranormal investigator searching to unlock the mysteries of the unknown,

Each player is randomly given an Investigator card of the Believer, the Skeptic, the Medium, or the Fraud. The Believer has to find two phenomenon mysteries, the Skeptic, two logical explanations, the Medium has to find one message “from beyond the veil”, and the Fraud’s job is to cause havoc for every other player while empting their hand for a win.

The basic components of the game are 5 mystery cards, numbered cards +1-7 called Evidence Cards, a Discredited Card and a Poltergeist card. Those cards are the main part of the deck and are the key parts of game play. They’re used to solve the mysteries of the paranormal. The mysteries are solved and the mystery card flips once players have played 20 points worth of numbered Evidence cards in a stack under it.

Numbered Evidence cards must be added to the stack in ascending order and duplicate Evidence cards cannot be added to a stack, or out of order, unless it is a +1 card. Discredited cards can remove a numbered Evidence card from a stack and the Poltergeist card swaps 3 cards either to the player to the right or left, depending on the choice of the player who played the card. The simplicity of having a Solitaire like mechanic is what makes the game fast. What makes the game fun, what gives it variety and keeps the game exciting are the Investigator and the Affiliation cards combinations.

The Affiliations give each Investigator a bit of flavor and a special ability. The special abilities augment each Investigator in interesting ways based on the win condition of each Investigator. They allow the players to flex or break the regular rules of play but the game remains balanced because each player gets to break the rules of the game in their own way. Affiliations also add interesting flavor to the Paranormal Investigation theme. They make solving the mysteries of the unknown fun and a bit funny all at the same time.

Ever hear of a Paranormal Investigator who is a Skeptic but who is affiliated with a Coven of Witches? How about a Medium who is in the Military? During game play I had a blast losing to a true Believer from The Cult in Yellow while I played a Professional Fraud.

That’s the great thing about the feeling one gets while playing Paranormal Investigation. The quest to unlock the mysteries of the unknown can be played again and again with all kinds of different varieties of Investigator and Affiliation combinations. The shenanigans from the combinations guarantee everyone will have a great time and the speed of the game guarantees there will be plenty of chances to win.

Touch Paper Press is currently offering “Paranormal Investigation” on Kickstarter. They’ve already funded but they’ve got some exciting stretch goals for anyone who buys in now, before the game is available in their local game shop. Touch Paper Press has a history of successful Kickstarter launches and of pleasing their fans so if you’re game to unlock the mysteries of the unknown, 10 minutes at a time, go give support their Kickstarter and pick up the game. If you’d prefer to wait and buy it from your local game shop, you can follow Touch Paper Press via social media on Twitter at and on their website at TouchPaperPress.com.

XBOX: Twitch Streaming Hits Xbox One

Both consoles launched missing features that had been discussed during their multiple press conference announcements. The glaring miss on Microsoft’s part was the ability to broadcast gameplay via Twitch.tv. While most of us running a broadcast have a work around using a video capture card through a PC that is still unavailable on the PS4, the native streaming is something that has really changed the way many gamers play. March 11th is now shaping up to be a huge day for the Xbox One as they are not only releasing the first Xbox One Bundle, releasing the much anticipated “Titanfall” (that also comes in previously mentioned bundle), it now is also the release for live streaming via the Xbox One.

“Over the last two years, we have seen the broadcasting and spectating of video games go from a niche activity to a pastime shared by millions,” said Emmett Shear, CEO and Founder, Twitch. “As the experience grows in popularity, it’s important to provide as broad a feature set as possible for the community. Microsoft has done just that by rolling out the most robust console integration of Twitch to date and setting a new bar for others to strive for.”

If you have configured your Kinect you will be able to stream simply by saying “Xbox broadcast”, for those that would rather do it manually without the voice activation you can also begin streaming from the Twitch App. The Xbox also has the unique ability to allow party invites through the broadcast service, so you will be able to join up with the players you’re watching. If you want to get a head start on your streaming I would head over to Twitch.tv now and set up your account.
