REVIEW: Doctor Who FAQ

When I picked up this book, I was hoping for a good source of general information source on the past and present of The Doctor. While there is certainly a past love for the character, the author clearly has an axe to grind.

The author so clearly has a chip on his shoulder about Matt Smith to the point of it being obnoxious. I really wanted to learn about Doctor Who, I’ve loved 9, 10, and 11, and I’m getting back into 4 and some of the others. Reading constantly how much the author is disgusted by Matt Smith doesn’t do me any good at all and makes me not want to read it. At all.

He assures us that neither bow ties nor fezzes are cool (something both subjective and untrue) and makes us feel like we’re idiots for enjoying Matt Smith.

Here’s a direct passage from the book:

Reclaiming the most grotesque personal flaws of the Sixth Doctor, while reiterating the visual missteps too (bow ties and fezzes are not cool, no matter how loudly he insists otherwise), the Eleventh Doctor dealt in riddles, not because they were necessary but because they sounded profound (or comical) the first time he used them.

As the Tenth Doctor, he coined the term “timey wimey” as a way out of having to explain a particular phenomenon to the slow-on-the-uptake Martha. As the Eleventh he adopted a virtual catchphrase, a way out of explaining anything to anyone, and while that might have been sufficient to satisfy the imbecilic curiosity of his then-current companions, the impossibly dull Amy and Rory, it also reduced his own believability, suggesting infallibilaty by redacting its actuality. Plus, didn’t comedian Russell Brand do the same thingy-wingy with his booky-wooky first?

Isn’t that so incredibly pedantic and insulting?

Here’s where I have a problem with this: This book isn’t billed as an editorial for the author. It’s billed as a FAQ. I wanted answers to my questions and to learn something, not be lectured about how stupid I am for liking one of the best Doctor’s we’ve ever had.

Did I learn some things? Sure. But really only when Mr. Thompson seemed to care about the character.

This book is billed as reference, but at times it reads more like a diatribe.

For my money, I’m waiting for Alan Kistler’s book instead. That guy knows Doctor Who and he’s a great writer.

If you insist on buying this book, you can get it on Amazon. I don’t recommend it, though. At all. Unless you like getting lectured. Or called an idiot.

New Zealand To Mint Doctor Who Coins

New Zealand is at it again, making awesome coins. In the past they’ve made Star Wars and The Hobbit coins and this year they are giving us 12 Doctor Who Coins.

Doctor Who’s 50th anniversary is being marked with a series of collectible coins to be issued by New Zealand Mint in association with BBC Worldwide Australia.

Eleven actors have played the lead in the British science fiction show, which turns 50 on November 23, and all 11 will be commemorated in the set.

The 12th coin will feature the TARDIS and is the only one I can find a price for, $155. It will also come in a 3D printed TARDIS. They’ll be available February 1st HERE. Gotta love those Kiwis.

TRAILER: Doctor Who Returns in 2013

How bout that Doctor Who Christmas special? The Snowmen have melted! The Great Intelligence has been defeated! And we are left with the mystery of Clara. What is her secret? Well as we wait for the back half of series 7 we are left with this teaser that aired after “The Snowmen.” What surprises await the Doctor moving into his golden anniversary? Happy 50th Doctor!

STAR WARS VII: David Tennant Interested

I’m going to go out on a limb and say that every actor or actress that has ever done anything in the realm of nerdery is going to get asked if they want to be in the new Star Wars Trilogy. I imagine it was something that was asked constantly in interviews and press junkets in the mid-nineties. It’s going to continue to be asked now. Forever.

So far we have video of Tom Hiddleston, now David Tennant. How long before somebody gets Nathan Fillion before a camera?

The answers won’t be surprising at all. “Would you want to do Star Wars?” “Of course.”

And it all ends with me rushing to post it here.

Tennant’s involvement with Star Wars began publicly a few weeks ago when he was revealed to be the voice of a thousand year old droid who helped Jedi build their lightsabers on an episode of The Clone Wars. He was also Doctor Who, which makes him awesome.

TRAILER: Doctor Who – Christmas 2012 Special

I’m going to be honest, this is either a wonderful piece of misdirection, or I have absolutely no idea what we’re getting into. But I really, really like the look of this episode.

This episode premieres on Christmas Day.

REVIEW: Doctor Who 7.5 – “The Angels Take Manhattan”

A warning now: this will, indeed, contain spoilers. If you haven’t watched the episode and are clicking on reviews of the episode, my guess is that you’re actively seeking spoilers out.

Well, here they are.

The final episode of Amy and Rory Pond’s tenure as the Doctor’s companions has been a long time coming. We’ve known about it for quite a while, and things on the show this season have clearly been building to that point. At some point during the last episode, “The Slow Invasion,” I almost felt as though it was overkill. We’d been saying goodbye to the Ponds for awhile now and let’s just get to it.

I was an idiot.

The Doctor needed more time to say goodbye. Forget the Doctor, I needed more time to say goodbye.

“The Angels Take Manhattan” is, in my opinion, one of the finest, most heart-wrenching episodes of Doctor Who we’ve ever had. To me, Doctor Who is at its best when it’s being tragic with a dash of whimsy. This episode had all of that in spades. There were some parts left unresolved, particularly the entire Mr. Grayle subplot, but I imagine he was just zapped into the Hotel Quay as well.

This episode was about making hard choices. Amy made a choice to be with her husband that Rose never could. Rose would never leave the Doctor’s side. Amy would never leave Rory’s. I think it was better that way.

The emotional center of this episode is The Doctor’s inability to let things and people go. It’s not something we often see on the show, but when he is forced to say goodbye, we’re given the best episodes of the show.

Wrapped up in a 30s noir, “The Angels Take Manhattan” is a taut pulp story with weeping angels everywhere. The rest doesn’t matter to me. The fact that they force our protagonists into a difficult choice makes them the right antagonist. Kurt Vonnegut said to do horrible things to your characters so we can see what they are made of and we truly see what the Ponds are made of.

Though they’re separated from the Doctor, they still have each other.

As viewers, this separation breaks our collective heart and both of the Doctor’s to boot. He’s crying. We’re crying…

…but left to reflect on the episode, things really ended well. Yes, Amy and Rory will never be able to see the Doctor again, but they have each other. I said it on twitter and it bears repeating: This is the most traumatically depicted “happily ever after” ending that’s ever been put onto the small screen.

It’s a perfect and fitting end for the girl who waited and her Centurion. I’m sad to see them go, but I’m dying to see where the Doctor goes from here.

And now for a bit of a laugh:

Watching this episode with my son, he said, “I’m sad that Amy and Rory won’t be able to see The Doctor anymore. If I were the Doctor, I’d totally take the chance of blowing up New York. It has to happen at some point anyway, right? I mean, how else is there a New New York in Futurama?”

The Doctor returns in his Christmas special in December.
