Comic Relief is a major UK Based charity that tackles poverty and social injustice, two things on the rise in a world more and more dominated by profit motives. They are raising money for their charity and they’re doing it in perhaps the coolest ways possible.

Steven Moffat and the rest of the team behind Doctor Who have put together two webisodes of the show to tide us over until the premiere of Season 6 next month.

You can pay to download them on iTunes and the money will go directly to Comic Relief, or you can watch them below on Youtube and donate to the Comic Relief charity on your own.

TRAILER: Doctor Who Series 6

This is the trailer for the upcoming series of Doctor Who. It was originally aired after the Christmas special. I’m pretty excited for this series which will be broken up into two parts this year. The first 6 or 7 episodes will star airing this spring and will leave us on a big cliffhanger until the fall. Also this year will see the Neil Gaiman penned episode!

Doctor Who – “Dalek Ride-In Toy”

Have you ever wanted to drive around like a Dalek? Well now you can! That is… your children can. In this electronic “Ride-In” Dalek. This toy stands at 128 cm tall and is powered by a 6v battery. It features 10 different Dalek sounds and phrases, along with being able to steer it in a full 360 degrees. I wish they made these in grown up sizes! It might still be worth it to get one and squeeze into it. Zappies, a distributor in the UK, will be the exclusive distributors for this awesome toy which is available here.

David Tennant: Engaged

I’m sorry ladies but it seems the former doctor David Tennant is officially engaged. Now if you haven’t heard who he’s engaged to here’s a fun little story. David Tennant is engaged to Georgia Moffett. Moffett played Jenny in the sixth episode of the fourth season of Doctor Who. The episode entitled “The Doctor’s Daughter” has a character named Jenny who turns out to be The Doctor’s actual daughter. So Tennant and Moffett are to be wed after they were on screen father and daughter. Now the craziness does not end there, Moffett is the real life daughter of Peter Moffett who played the fifth Doctor in the Doctor Who franchise. And this Doctor appeared in a special short episode of Doctor Who for Children In Need entitled “Time Crash” where he appeared on The TARDIS with tenth doctor David Tennant. And for just a little bit more laughs the episode was written by Steven Moffat. So just to recap, Tennant is engaged to his on screen daughter who is the real life daughter of the on screen fifth doctor who did appear on screen with the tenth doctor as well.

And now, all the women and a few men of the world weep.

Trailer: Doctor Who Christmas Special

Its the most wonderful time of the year! The countdown is on to this years Doctor Who Christmas special which is titled “A Christmas Carol.” Matt Smith, Karen Gillen, and Arthur Darvill return as The Doctor, Amy Pond, and Rory Williams. Guest starring is Michael Gambon who you most recently have seen as Dumbledore in the new Harry Potter movie. “A Christmas Carol” will air on BBC America on December 25th at 9/8c.

Tom Cruise in Doctor Who?

Could Tom Cruise be cameoing on the upcoming Christmas episode of Doctor Who?!

It’s not impossible.

I was doing some research on Tom Cruise for a round of the Big Shiny Geek Show Pub Quiz we hold weekly when I found an upcoming episode of Dr. Who on his IMDb profile.  The IMDb is notoriously inaccurate for upcoming projects, but this episode seems to have been shot and it’s got an unusually complete page, which isn’t normal for pages with wild inaccuracies.  It also has Michael Gambon (Dumbeldore) listed in the episode, and there’s been a lot of reporting on that as well.

You can see the IMDb page in question by clicking here.

I got very excited about this news.  I really like Tom Cruise when he’s behind a good director, in a good project, and on the top of his game.  He’s been in a lot of movies that I would consider some of my favorites (Magnolia, Eyes Wide Shut, The Color of Money, Minority Report) and turned in some incredible performances.  And who could forget his impeccable comedic turn in Tropic Thunder?

I did some digging and I really can’t find a solid confirmation.  I’ve found no denials, but I found a string of articles dating back to November 2007 that said Doctor Who producers were approaching Cruise for a part.  Here’s one article from the Boston Globe (who in turn based their report on the UK’s Daily Star):

The ‘Lions for Lambs’ actor is among a host of top US stars, including Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie and Madonna, who the BBC are hoping to get on board for three blockbuster instalments of the British sci-fi series to be filmed next year.

An insider told Britain’s Daily Star newspaper: “BBC producers know they can’t pay these stars what they are used to, but what they can offer is an exciting role in a real cutting-edge show. And the big stars love that kind of kudos.”

I’m not anywhere close to being this caught up.  I’m new to Doctor Who mania and I’m an episode away from finishing the first season of Torchwood before I attack David Tennant’s second season as the Doctor in earnest.  At this point I would consider myself a burgeoning super-fan and this news actually excites me and is incentive to catch up more quickly.

The episode he’s allegedly on will air on Christmas Day 2010.

What do you guys think?  Is this the mistake Den of Geek seems to think it is?  Or could this make an episode of Dr. Who into something even more awesome?

Doctor Who to Film Season Opener in Utah!

That’s right, according to Digital Spy the new season of Doctor Who is set to shoot the beginning of their sixth season in Utah. The season will begin with a two part episode where The Doctor, Amy and Rory are summoned to the 1960’s-era Oval Office. This is the first time Doctor Who has ever been shot inside the US though there have been US themed episodes before. Production for the episode begins in Cardiff this month and the scenes in Utah are scheduled for mid-November. Anyone have any ideas of where they might shoot?

Doctor Who to be Split in Two Next Year!

The BBC have released a press release with details on how the  next series of Doctor Who will air. Due to a major plot twist in the middle of the series it will be broken into two parts. Half airing in the spring, and the other half airing in the fall. What major cliffhanger will we be left on? We’ll just have to wait until next year to find out.

The BBC and Steven Moffat have announced today that the transmission of the next series of Doctor Who, in 2011, will be split into two blocks, transmitting in spring and autumn.

The split transmission is the result of a request from Steven Moffat to write a new Doctor Who story arc which involves a big plot twist in the middle of the series. By splitting the series Moffat plans to give viewers one of the most exciting Doctor Who cliffhangers and plot twists ever, leaving them waiting, on the edge of their seats, until the autumn to find out what happens.

Steven Moffat said: “The split series is hugely exciting because viewers will be treated to two premieres, two finales and more event episodes. For the kids it will never be more than a few months to the next Doctor Who! Easter, Autumn, Christmas!!”
