‘The Flash’ Episode 1.13 “The Nuclear Man” (7 out of 10) Starring Grant Gustin, Candice Patton, Rick Cosnett, Danielle Panabaker, Carlos Valdes, Tom Kavanaugh, and Jesse L. Martin. Guest starring Robbie Amell, Victor Garber, Malese Jow. First broadcast February 10, 2015.

One of the strengths of “The Flash” is that even though the main character is a likable guy, and he’s got enough superheroing and superpowers to run (ha!) a show all on his own, they’ve decided to make it an ensemble show. Only thirteen episodes in, and there’s a cast of around a dozen recurring characters, each with story arcs of their own leading toward other things. For some that arc is moving them toward being a superhero, others toward villainy. If you watched this episode just for the Fastest Man Alive, you were probably disappointed. But “The Flash” has become much more than just the Scarlet Speedster. It’s still about Barry Allen, but also about Harrison Wells and Caitlin Snow and Cisco Ramon and Joe West and Ronnie Raymond and all these other characters, some of whom existed in the comic books beforehand. Even then, this Caitlin Snow is vastly different from the one we’ve seen in comic books. The Caitlin we knew was Killer Frost, the archenemy to Firestorm. Could our sweet little Dr. Snow turn into…that? We’re starting to see how she could. And I love it.

How does the saying go? “Better to have loved and lost than to have your fiance explode into a particle accelerator and then come back reincarnated with his body but an old physicist man inside and he doesn’t remember you, but he…oh he blew up again?” Yeah, that’s the saying. That story is basically the life of Caitlin and her one-time fiance, now gestalt-being Firestorm. The title “The Nuclear Man” is a kind of nickname for Firestorm, like Superman is the Man of Steel and Batman the Dark Knight.     The particle accelerator “accident” in Central City fused Ronnie Raymond and Dr. Martin Stein together, and it’s going to be a real bitch getting them apart again. Caitlin stands up to Dr. Wells, getting him to forfeit some power from his Reverse Flash suit to create a device that could split Raymond and Stein back into two people.

This episode shows us more about Firestorm, Ronnie Raymond, and Dr. Stein than we’ve had in the previous dozen episodes, and yet it feels like a natural outgrowth of the series, not another hero shoehorned into the show. When I first heard about them putting Firestorm into the mix, I didn’t see how they could take such a patently cartoony concept — two guys who are separate most of the time, but unite to become one hero, who can transmute materials — and make it watchable TV. But they’ve done it. And made him someone we care about via Caitlin’s relationship with him.

For Barry Allen, he’s around, he gets the B-story, which is basically him and Linda Park getting to know each other better. I like her, a lot. A lot more than Iris. She’s funny, smart, good looking, and just seems to have better chemistry with Barry than Iris does. I’m curious to see what they do with these characters, and if they have the same destinies their comic book counterparts do.

The other  B-story is Detective West and Cisco working together on Nora Allen’s murder case, where they find DNA evidence that doesn’t seem to make sense. This piece of information will carry us into a storyline that will probably last through the rest of the season, and one that producers say will “change the show forever.” They’ve got a great group of characters to work with, I’m interested to see where they’re going.

Last week’s episode of “The Flash” introduced us to a villain who I had disdained for years, the Pied Piper. As they’ve done with many characters, the showrunners have taken a rather silly character and turned them into a compellingly watchable one. So even though there is a new villain this week, my favorite scenes were with Piper/Hartley Rathaway. Even then, there wasn’t so much happening with the villains as there were with the core Flash Family — Barry Allen, Caitlin Snow, and Cisco Ramon. 

Barry’s been nursing his wounds ever since Iris moved on to Eddie. And that happened in the first episode, so…for the entire run of the series so far. I think we’ve all been wanting him to move on. Caitlin has been mourning the loss of her fiance Ronnie for the entire run of the series. Which in my opinion is more legitimate than mooning over a childhood crush, and she does it better than Barry does. In any case, you have these two wounded attractive twentysomethings, who go out drinking together at a karaoke bar, and end up…not together. Turns out there’s a whole hashtag for their shippers, #Snowbarry. Like the #Olicity hashtag for “Arrow” fans, I guess there are people that want Barry and Caitlin together. I did not know this.

Their karaoke moment was cute, kind of meta, knowing that Grant Gustin came from “Glee,” and he kind of kicked her ass. Vocally. His skillz attracted the attention of Linda Park, a sports reporter in Central City who in the comic books ends up coupled with “Kid Flash” Wally West. So another DC Comics character portrayed in live action! Score! Linda and Barry flirt some, go on a date, and that’s about it. 

The new villain in town is “Peek a Boo,” a teleporting villain introduced in the comics in 2002. She works well on TV, and my sons liked the idea that she can teleport Nightcrawler-style, but only where she can see. She carries a telescope to give her greater reach, and can also use it as a nightstick to beat the crap out of good guys. I kinda like her. More than I think I should. In any case, she busts her boyfriend out of prison, the same prison where Barry’s dad is getting beaten up for trying to help the cops get some inside info. 

This is normally the kind of episode I hate, where a lot of small things are happening, but there’s not a strong central story to hang the smaller things on. Here, the small things are significant enough that it comes together. Cisco frees Pied Piper from the S.T.A.R. Labs prison to get more information on Firestorm, in the interest of helping Caitlin. We also get to see Cisco using some “Vibe” technology for the first time, and even though it ends up backfiring, we’re seeing him progress towards his own heroic mantle. We do get more about Firestorm, and it looks like next week’s episode “The Nuclear Man” will give us everything else. 

There’s a great moment in prison between Barry and his dad in the infirmary, where dad basically says “look, I know you’re the Flash, I know you’re doing great things, I’m proud of you, go tear it up,” without actually saying that he knows Barry is the Flash. But he so does. It may just be my dad-ness talking, but that was a strong moment for both characters. 

Even though the biggest things that happen in this episode are still quite small — the almost-date between Barry and Caitlin, the moment between Barry and his dad, Cisco’s tentative steps towards superherodom — it’s all still entertaining, it’s fun, and it has more heart in it than you’d expect, somehow without it turning into a soap opera. Still loving this show. 

The “stinger” for this episode — the last 90-second scene at the end of each episode, the one my DVR cuts off and is usually Dr. Wells doing something suspicious — is one I’ve been waiting for all my life. Or…since the pilot episode of “The Flash.” We proceed through dark sewers with municipal employees, rounding corners, then we see GRODD grodd GRODD GRODD grodd scrawled on walls, scratched into the surfaces…and come around a final corner to see an enormous gorilla, who savagely attacks the poor guys who are just doing their jobs. 

Gorilla. Freaking. Grodd. 

I can’t believe they’re really using Grodd. I don’t know to what extent, or when, or if he’ll be talking, or mind controlling, or what. But dammit, they’ve got a big ol’ ape, and it’s Grodd, and I love it. 

‘Arrow’ Episode 3.12 “Uprising” (8 out of 10) Starring Stephen Amell, Katie Cassidy, David Ramsey, Emily Bett Rickards, Colton Haynes. Guest Starring Vinnie Jones, John Barrowman. First aired February 4, 2015.

Since the mid-season hiatus, I’ve felt like “Arrow” was in a rut. Oliver was “dead” over in Nanda Parbat, Laurel was starting her Black Canary career, Brick had taken over the Glades…but there wasn’t much moving forward. We know Oliver’s alive and will come back, and the Hong Kong flashbacks (which have always bothered me) were taking up more of the show than they should. Felicity was mourning Oliver and pre-mourning Ray Palmer, and just turning around in circles. 

“Uprising” finally moved everyone out of their rut. The episode has Arsenal and Black Canary finally taking the superheroing to the level that Oliver had been at when he left Starling City. Alongside Captain Lance, and with the support of Diggle and Felicity, they’re able to take on Brick…they think. Then, in the midst of getting their asses womped, Malcolm Merlyn comes in and saves the day. He’s asking for their help, and will eventually be asking again. It turns out Brick is the thug who killed Rebecca Merlyn 21 years ago, and now Merlyn wants revenge. 

Instead of Hong Kong flashbacks this time around, we get Merlyn’s flashbacks–Tommy and Oliver were just pups, and Rebecca Merlyn had just been killed. We see (some incredible mid-90s hair) Merlyn’s first revenge killings, and how they propelled him to join Ra’s Al Ghul’s League of Assassins. This episode’s flashbacks dovetailed more neatly with the current storylines, with conversations there finding resonance with Malcolm’s relationships with Thea. “Arrow” has looked at the difference between revenge and justice before, at the heroism of deciding not to kill. It’s revisited here, and as we move forward with Thea’s role in the death of Sara, that conversation will probably be happening often.

A few small things I liked about this episode: I love that Captain Quentin Lance just called Arsenal “Harper,” in the middle of a conversation. Roy tried to play it off, “uhhh I don’t know what you’re…” and Lance called him on it. “From a red hoodie to a red hood?” He’s a detective, and he finally just called him on it. Didn’t threaten to expose the “secret identity” or arrest him for vigilantism, just told him to watch out for his daughter. Which was kinda heartbreaking. Anyway. I love that Lance just stopped playing dumb. I’m wondering if he’s sussed out that Arrow is Oliver Queen…lately I’ve been assuming he knows, but it’s irrelevant. Kind of like Commissioner Gordon knowing/not knowing that Batman is Bruce Wayne. Let the hero do their thing, I’ll do my thing.

I also liked that Arsenal and Canary, with the help of Sin, Wildcat, and Glades residents were able to take on Brick. That they had enough charisma and power and courage to take back the city without Oliver’s help. At the last minute, Oliver does return. He makes a great speech, and, as the Flash did on that other CW show, stopped being urban myth and became the hero for his city. It’s a big step, one there’s no turning back from.  

There were also some sad moments in this episode. There are the expected ones, like Malcolm finding out about the death of his wife (in flashback), but also some moments we knew were coming, but we weren’t sure how or when. Sin tells Captain Lance that whoever the blonde chick in black leather is, it’s not Sara. He’ll find out soon enough that Sara’s dead–again–and that will be hard to watch. The other sad bit was Felicity’s final, heartbreaking confirmation of the breakup between her and Oliver. And ten thousand #Olicity fans wept. When she said “I don’t want to be a woman that you love,” it hurt, man. It hurt. She was a big part of Oliver clawing his way back to Starling City, but she’s tired of the BS.

I’m wondering if this will spark her jumping ship to Central City (as fans have speculated), or how it will change the dynamic in the Arrowcave. I would like to see some of the “old” Felicity back, where she smiles and jokes and isn’t crying over some superhero boy or another. She’s a genius, she’s a strong woman, let’s get back to that. 

And last thing–William Shatner was live-tweeting “Arrow” last night, and cracking me the hell up. I don’t know if it’s really him or one of his harem or servants or whatever, but wow. It was good times. 

Next week, Count Vertigo is back, and it looks like Black Canary confronts Canary or sisters wrestle or…yeah. Lots of blondes in black leather. Thumbs up.

The usual gang of idiots over at MAD Magazine have been churning out Star Warsparodies as cheap cash grabs since the beginning. Well, actually, since slightly after the beginning. Their crystal ball for 1977 was broken (or maybe it was their heads), and they had no idea Star Wars was going to be a hit, so their first take on the space saga didn’t come out until 8 months after the original film hit theaters.

So, for their January 1978 issue of MAD, they produced this beautiful piece of art by Jack Rickard that almost got them sued:

It went over well and they continued to mine Star Wars for all it was worth until the prequel trilogy ended in 2005. I’m sure they cried as much as I did that we’d never again see a new Star Wars film, but for completely different reasons.

When it was announced new films would indeed be made to continue the Star Warssaga, MAD must have seen dollar signs in fits of giddiness. And now we, the Huffington Post-reading public, get to see the fruits of those dollar signs exclusively.

For their newest issue, hitting stands February 24, 2015 (February 13 for subscribers), the creatively bankrupt band of idiots over at MAD have given us one more dip in theStar Wars pool with their first cover dedicated to this new era of the greatest space film saga of all time.

Bryan Young is the author of “A Children’s Illustrated History of Presidential Assassination” and “The Serpent’s Head,” the editor-in-chief of the nerd news and review site Big Shiny Robot!, and is the co-host of the Star Wars podcast, “Full of Sith.”

Yeah, I don’t know who she is either. Melissa Benoist is best known for the role of Marley Rose on “Glee,” but also had a role in “Whiplash.” I still don’t know who she is. I will soon, because she’s been cast as Supergirl in the upcoming CBS series of the same name.

The official description of the series: “Born on the planet Krypton, Kara Zor-El escaped amid its destruction years ago. Since arriving on Earth, she’s been hiding the powers she shares with her famous cousin. But now at age 24, she decides to embrace her superhuman abilities and be the hero she was always meant to be.” 

There are some things in there that I like — it’s not a “Smallville” take on the character, where she’s discovering her powers piece by piece, and in high school, and…it’s beyond that. Superman is an established hero, she’s done with school, she’s in a career. Interviews with producers and showrunners have said that Jimmy Olsen, Cat Grant and other established Superman characters will be in the series. I don’t know yet if it will be set in Metropolis, but there’s a good chance it will be. Can they do that without having Superman/Clark Kent and Lois Lane in the series? We’ll see. They’re moving forward, they’re using the title “Supergirl,” and it’s an actual superhero. They’re piloting now, with the intent of a fall series, and CBS already has a “series commitment.” Yay!

In any case. CBS has its Supergirl. Does she look the part? I don’t know yet. We’ve heard there is a costume, it’s made by the same designer who did the Flash and Green Arrow costumes for CW. If they take inspiration from the most recent look in the comic books, it’ll be along these lines. Which I like…for about ten years she was all-midriff all the time, until it got ridiculous. This look could probably use a skirt or pants or whatever women these days use to cover some leggy bits. Still. Nice legs. 

More importantly, Greg Berlanti, the producer for “The Flash” and “Arrow” is also a producer for “Supergirl,” alongside Ali Adler and Sarah Schechter. They promise to deliver a character who’s strong and intellectual and tell a female-empowerment story, in a crime procedural setting. I’m fine with all of that. But she still needs to be Supergirl. Kryptonian, flying, with a damn cape Supergirl. They’ve made “The Flash” and “Arrow” must-see TV for me, while “Gotham” has slid off my DVR and “Constantine” never made it there in the first place. Where “The Flash,” “Arrow,” and “Supergirl” all have the same production teams, there’s the potential of crossovers between all three series. It depends on the day and who’s being interviewed as to whether that can happen or not. Even if “Supergirl” flies solo, I’m hoping the same team that made the CW series hits can do the same for the Maid of Might.

They really call her that, you know. “The Maid of Might.”

‘Arrow’ Episode 3.10 “Left Behind” (7 out of 10) Starring Stephen Amell, Katie Cassidy, David Ramsey, Emily Bett Rickards, Colon Haynes. Guest Starring Vinnie Jones, Cynthia Addai Robinson. First aired January 21, 2015.

When we left Oliver Queen in early December, he had traveled to the Himalayan kingdom of Nanda Parbat, home of Ra’s Al Ghul. There he challenged Ra’s to a duel…and died pretty quickly. A sword through the chest, followed by a fall off a cliff. A literal cliffhanger. Nice! Back home in Starling City, the Arrow’s been gone less than a week, and things are falling apart. A new crime boss named Danny Brickwell is taking on the cops. “Brick” seems to be nearly invulnerable to bullets (and arrows, we’ve gotta assume), and is more than just a thug. He’s set himself to work freeing all of the prisoners that Team Arrow have put away over the last two years. He’s taking evidence from the Starling City PD, and using quasi-legal means to get them out. Not a jailbreak, but worse–they’re all hitting the streets, all legitimate-like.

This crime wave is quickly overwhelming Oliver Queen’s allies. John Diggle becomes the de facto leader of the crew, but feels unequal to the task. He’s an incredible right hand man, but isn’t quite sure how to turn his muscle and brains into a leadership role. He’s also not the Arrow, and is left with tools that don’t fit his needs. One of those tools is Arsenal; Roy has been getting better at the sidekicking, but as with Diggle, needs more leadership. Felicity is kind of a mess; one hero she loves is gone and presumed dead. The other, Ray Palmer, is about to take his life in his hands by putting on the A.T.O.M. suit, and wants Felicity’s help fine-tuning it. She (to her credit) refuses.

On a third (fourth?) front, Malcolm Merlyn is sure that Oliver Queen is dead, he travels to Nanda Parbat, he retrieves the sword used to kill Oliver, and brings it back to the Arrowcave for analysis. By the way, how many villains now know where the Arrowcave is? I know at least Merlyn, Deathstroke, and Captain Boomerang have the address–add all of the heroes and sidekicks who know about it, and it’s becoming quite the hub of activity. It is under a nightclub…one of the only series regulars who doesn’t know it exists owns the damn nightclub. Anyway. Merlyn sees which way the wind is blowing and wants to take Thea and hit the road…hopefully continuing her training in the ways of the dark side. 

Then in flashbacks, we have Amanda Waller using Oliver and Maseo to do her bidding, superseding Maseo’s need to find his wife Tatsu. It brings Oliver and Maseo closer together, even as it creates friction between them and Waller. This flashback connects neatly to the current story in Nanda Parbat.  

It’s nice to see them try, and fail to fill Arrow’s quiver

In all, the episode felt messy. More disjointed than it needed to be. Even though we know Oliver Queen isn’t dead, we still get over the top emoting from Felicity about the whole thing. Which is appropriate, but seemed to drag the narrative. It also gave her motivation to refuse to help Ray Palmer with his A.T.O.M. suicide mission. It added depth to their relationship, but also meant there wasn’t the banter that serves to lighten the tone of this sometimes bleak series. We do get some nice moments between Diggle and Roy, and it’s nice to see them try and fail to fill Arrow’s quiver.

The final scenes of the episode have Laurel at long last donning the Black Canary costume. We see her lawyer mode, failing to stop Brick’s prison breaks. We see her fears about losing Oliver, but also the only one with hope that they’d see him again. It’s been a natural buildup of the character over this season and last, so it’s nice to see her handily kicking some ass. She also used the “Canary Cry” sonic bombs, something I think we only saw Sara’s Canary use twice before. I hope this Black Canary uses them more. Showrunners have said this will kick off an arc of three episodes centered on Black Canary, something I’m looking forward to.

Episodes like this have a lot of forward movement; there are about ten characters whose stories move forward in “Left Behind.” I wonder if it would be better to have some focus on a smaller family of characters, and put others on the back burner. In any case, it was a solid episode, but missed on a few marks. Hoping for better next week.

‘The Flash’ Episode 1.10 “Revenge of the Rogues” (7 out of 10) Starring Grant Gustin, Candice Patton, Rick Cosnett, Danielle Panabaker, Carlos Valdes, Tom Kavanaugh, and Jesse L. Martin. Guest starring Wentworth Miller and Dominic Purcell. Written by Geoff Johns and Kai Yu Wu. First broadcast January 20, 2015.

When we left “The Flash” six weeks ago, he had met his archenemy, the villain who killed his mother, Reverse Flash. This man in a yellow Flash suit outran Barry, outsmarted the S.T.A.R. Labs team, and was revealed (to the audience) to be Professor Harrison Wells. So this guy is Barry Allen’s mentor, he’s his enemy, and he’s pushing Barry to his limits. 

This first episode after the hiatus, “Revenge of the Rogues,” opens with that process continuing. Six weeks has passed for the characters as well, and in that time Dr. Wells has been testing Barry, pushing him to go faster, be better. We’re still trying to figure out why. What’s his motive? Why would he want his enemy to be better than him? Supervillains don’t typically want a fair fight. 

Meanwhile, Captain Cold is back in town. Wentworth Miller’s Leonard Snart is intent on taking revenge on the Flash. No longer content to bank heists and gallery thefts, Captain Cold is using his freeze gun alongside a new partner, Mick Rory. Rory (played by Dominic Purcell) is a pyromaniac. Not like I was when I was a kid, pouring gasoline into things that explode, but like a legit pyro who doesn’t know when to stop. This barely-controlled lunatic has a handheld flamethrower, but no real direction. Captain Cold brings him under his parkaed wing, and convinces “Heat Wave” to join him in his pursuit of the Flash. They bait him, they taunt him, they eventually bring him to a showdown, but only after some missteps and scuffles with each other.

Wentworth Miller’s take on Captain Cold is interesting…scheming, cunning, with an eye towards a big picture. Purcell’s growling menace is more muscle than brain, but there are some scenes that bring a little depth to him as well. Still a frigging psycho. Their team up was good, and will get better over time as more Rogues join the fold. More on that in a minute.

One of the central questions in this episode was this: What is Barry Allen’s role? Dr. Wells seems to think it’s some kind of pursuit of perfection–the better Barry gets, the more good he’ll be able to do for humankind. Barry and his father figure Joe West think that he should be spending more time fighting crime on the streets of Central City, and all the S.T.A.R. Labs tests can wait for better moments. It sets up conflicts between Dr. Wells and Detective West, and puts Barry in the middle. There’s history between Wells and West, and hopefully that will play out over the course of future episodes. 

Her fiance doesn’t seem as dead as he did a year ago

One of the ongoing story arcs has Dr. Caitlin Snow coming closer to finding out what really happened to her fiance Ronnie. He can burst into flames, he can fly, but he’s still not turning up. He doesn’t seem as dead as he did a year ago. When he was dead. This episodes gives her a few more bread crumbs — she finds out that “Firestorm” is an acronym that I didn’t write down. Plus typing F.I.R.E.S.T.O.R.M. is a pain in the ass. It involves taking substances apart at the atomic level and rearranging them into new elements, new molecules, new objects.

She meets Jason Rusch, who was part of the Firestorm project, and gets some clues about the disappearance of Professor Martin Stein, who’s also been involved in the Firestorm shenanigans. If you know the superhero Firestorm, he’s a “gestalt” hero that has different people fused together into one character. So it’s Ronnie Raymond’s body, semi-haunted by the disembodied spectre of Dr. Stein. Jason Rusch has also been in the mix. It’s all kind of a mess, and I’m relying on the Flash writers to fix it up. I have faith in them.

The other major development for the Flash is that the final battle between himself, Captain Cold, and Heat Wave takes place in the middle of Central City. On the street, in front of cops, reporters, my mom–everyone. He’s no longer an urban myth, no longer a hero who is just a rumor. He’s the Flash, and he’s the defender of Central City. It’s something Oliver Queen hasn’t done with “the Arrow” in Starling City; I’m looking forward to how this changes the series.

The end of this episode seems to wrap up the story of the Rogues, but of course they’ll be back. There are traditionally about eight members of Flash’s Rogues Gallery, if you don’t include Gorilla Grodd and Reverse Flash. Which you don’t. The real Rogues are like this perverse family of villains with a code of honor, with attachment to each other, with an obsession with the Flash that supersedes their pursuit of money. We’ve already got Captain Cold and Heat Wave, Captain Boomerang, we’ll meet Pied Piper next week, and although one Weather Wizard was killed in the first episode of the series, his similarly-powered brother will make an appearance later in the season. Casting has been announced for the Trickster (Mark Hamill!)(faints) and Golden Glider…we just need a few more to complete the set. Captain Cold is usually the leader of this gang, and Wentworth Miller’s take on him has the brains and the strength to pull it off. If the writers and producers stay the course, we’ll have a Rogues Gallery worth the name.

In the vein of “Superman: Earth One” and “Batman: Earth One,” DC published an updated take on its angsty adolescent heroes, the Teen Titans.

For the Superman and Batman Earth One titles, DC brought out the big guns, using all-star writers J. Michael Straczynski (Thor, Before Watchmen) and Geoff Johns (Green Lantern, Aquaman) respectively. Teen Titans is scribed by Jeff Lemire, a writer known for standing on the edges of the traditional DC story-lines (i.e. Animal Man, Green Arrow), whereas the two flag-ship titles were penned by creators from the mainstream of comic book continuity.

Lemire’s creator-owned work has established him as the go-to-guy for stories about young adults with a dark twist–see his award winning series “Sweet Tooth” and graphic novel “Essex County.” Readers familiar with Lemire’s previous work might carry expectations of the weird or slightly off into these graphic novel. Though expectations may be different than what is actually delivered on the pages.

While this is a very different take on the origin of the Teen Titans, it feels as though DC editorial had a strong idea for the story before it was given to Lemire–at least when compared to his creator-owned titles.

Without spoiling the reading experience of a well-written, well-drawn teen-angst super-hero origin story, I’ll say that the graphic novel has a feel as if the Superboy origin was put into a blender with Marvel’s “The Runaways” and served in a glass of ABC Family’s “Pretty Little Liars.”

The art is great. Terry Dodson’s work is perfect for the story. His style has just a hint of anime, a flavor that many young-adult readers will feel comforting, especially if they aren’t regular tights-and-capes comic readers.

Most Teen Titans fans are die-hards. I doubt this book will please the Titan uber-fangirls and fanboys. This is an original take on a group of characters that have seemingly and forever being haphazardly thrown together. What Lemire and his team did right in this Earth One version of the team, was give the characters a reason to be together, a reason that stands independent from the “put all the sidekicks on a team” mentality of the past.

That’s why I’m rating it 6 out of 10.
