As always, “Five & Three” brings you my favorite things in comics this week. Every week I pick my five favorite covers and three favorite panels to create “Five & Three”. I like to talk about why I picked the covers and panels and welcome hecklers and trend setters alike. 

Last week was big on comic releases and holiday festivities. I hope you had time to make it through your stack but if you didn’t, here is just some of the highlights you’re in for starting with a wonderful cover to the new “Gotham by Midnight #1” by Ben Templesmith. The art inside is just as good as Templesmith’s cover work but the story gives the book an added edge that makes it a must read. As long as Templesmith is onboard this book I don’t think anyone should drop it.

DC had a big week for covers that made my artistic mind happy. It’s a complete 180 from this time last year. It’s a nice refresher to have DC covers be the spectacular things they can be as evidenced by this Jae Lee and June Chung “Catwoman #36”.

Marvel comics gets an appearance this week because every issue of “The Superior Foes of Spider-Man” has been amazing and it’s sadly come to an end. While I was walking the floor of the Second annual Salt Lake Comic Con I ran into Steve Lieber’s table and he promised the final cover would be a great one. Nick Spencer and Lieber both drop the ball on not making more great work together but the cover and the contents are terrific. If you missed this book do not continue to miss out by skipping the trades too. This book is a must have for anyone’s collection.

Back to the DC covers with Sook and his mood setting ocean travelling cover for “The New 52 Futures End #30”. I love everything about this cover. The ominous giant O.M.A.C. in the background towers into the sky as our heroes travel in the foreground. The waves have a definite depth and sense of motion with the blurring around the edges.

Finally I’m going back to “Gotham by Midnight #1” but I’m picking Andrea Sorrentino’s variant cover. I love Sorrentino’s dynamic style and I miss him dearly on “Green Arrow”. I’m very excited to continue to get Sorrentino work and if Templesmith leaves “Gotham by Midnight”, the editors couldn’t possibly pick a better artist than the one who designed their first issues variant cover.

Lazarus is a spectacular piece of research, political and economic commentary, and mature look at strategy. I am hoping I get a nice fat hardcover very soon but until then I’l just have to do with amazing looks at future technology on display in the book. These panels are wonderful because they show the depth underneath these Lazarus characters as well as having a reasonable forward thinking eye for where technology will be in fifty years.

Matt Fraction has hit another home-run with “ODY-C” and it’s due in large part to the artist he picked for the book, Christian Ward. The panel layout reminds me of J.H. Williams III’s sensibility but with a bright and punchy feeling that’s all Ward.

The Archaia series “Butterfly” is unfortunately a mini-series that is quickly coming to an end. It’s helmed by Arash Amel and future big shot Marguerite Bennet. The art is out of this world and with covers by Phil Noto, you can tell the book was begging for readers to give the quality work a chance. This is a book I will be giving to my spy-story loving brother-in-law. I may just add a collected edition on my shelf next to the floppies. For now though, all I can do while waiting for another wonderful issue is tell everyone I can to demand their shops carry “Butterfly”.

‘The Flash’ Episode 1.7 “Power Outage” (7 out of 10) Starring Grant Gustin, Candice Patton, Rick Cosnett, Danielle Panabaker, Carlos Valdes, Tom Kavanaugh, and Jesse L. Martin. Guest starring Greg Finley, Robert Knepper, Michael Reventar. Tuesdays on The CW.

“The Flash” has been doing a great job of getting things right where other superhero television shows and even movies have gone awry. This week’s episode was a good example of how the series can take multiple villains and juggle them deftly, giving each their due, giving each a palpable threat, and still feeling like a solid episode with forward momentum. There are also some geeky references that had me with some serious anticipation wood — more on that later. The references, that is. I’ll keep my wood out of it. 

Ostensibly the major threat in the episode is Blackout, AKA Farooq. He was caught in the S.T.A.R. Labs explosion that unleashed metagenetic hell on Central City, and ended up with lightning powers. Kind of Electro-ey from Spider-Man, or Livewire from DC Comics. So yeah, electric powers. He also needs to feed on electricity, siphoning off power from substations where he needs to, but the lil bit of electricity in humans when he’s desperate for a fix. He feeds on the Flash, sees what a rush that is, and sucks all of the speed force right out of Barry. So Barry’s powerless. As Cisco aptly puts it, “you’re even slow for a normal guy.” Michael Reventar plays Farooq well, and the 90 seconds or so of backstory we have on him ups the pathos, making him more sympathetic than I expected. Blackout’s a minor character in the comics (only having one appearance as far as I know), so don’t expect him to be around for long. Dr. Wells’ eventual solution to the Blackout crisis is a sort of two birds, one stone situation that Wells ends up profiting from. I’m really starting to think he’s a bad dude. Like, badder than we expected. 

The other villain for the episode is Clock King, played by Robert Knepper. He first appeared in an episode in season two of “Arrow,” where he was weaker than I wanted him to be. A little eccentric, worked up over the death of his sister, but otherwise pretty weak. Clock King is one of Green Arrow’s archenemies from the comic books, so I was disappointed in how he turned out. In this episode, he breaks out of custody at the Central City police headquarters and takes hostages. While this is definitely the B-story, his quirky but deadly portrayal of Clock King makes him more menacing than he was on “Arrow.” He’s becoming a villain I’d like to see more of. The character seems more influenced by the “Batman: The Animated Series” take on the villain instead of the (kind of ridiculous) Silver Age version, realistic enough to fit into the DC Televerse. I can see him returning to Starling City and causing problems for the Emerald Archer. Keep him coming back. 

A tease for four more heroes?

As the episode switches between storylines, there are a few fanboy references thrown in that had me scrambling to Google to check out some names. Dr. Wells reels off a list of people who died in the particle accelerator explosion. We know Ronnie Raymond (Caitlyn’s fiance) died there, and we assume he’s going to show up as the hero Firestorm at some point. The list that Harrison Wells runs off includes four established DC Comics characters:

• Bea Da Costa – Fire
• Ralph Dibny – Elongated Man
• Al Rothstein – Atom Smasher
• Grant Emerson – Damage

All four are superheroes; I’m really only interested in Fire and Elongated Man, but they could write compelling stories for the latter two as well. Now, this could just be the writers/producers being exceptionally mean, throwing out some names that aren’t as big as “Clark Kent,” but still make the die-hard fans ears perk up. Fire and Elongated Man are both the kinds of heroes that you’d expect to see in “The Flash,” and would be fit for recurring characters…but C-List enough that the series could kill them off without a backlash. Okay, fanboys can backlash against anything and everything. Because we’re horrible. We already knew about some additional heroes popping up at some point–is this a hint of what will coming in the second half of season one? A tease for four more heroes? I hope so. 

The other nerd moment was Morena Baccarin voicing “Gideon,” evidently the AI in Dr. Wells’ future techno room space thingy. Although we’ve seen that secret room at S.T.A.R. Labs from the very first episode, this is the first time Dr. Wells addressed the AI as Gideon. Will this become a new character on the series? Is there some kind of significance to the name or character? Dunno. The headlines on the future newspaper/website are about the Flash disappearing, a crisis with red skies ending. DC Comics’ most famous crossover event was thirty years ago, “Crisis on Infinite Earths,” which had red skies and a collapsing multiverse — and the death of Barry Allen. Will “The Flash” head in that direction? An interesting concept, but I feel like it’s too big for a television series. That said, with showrunners that can make episodes like this one this much fun to watch–I’ll follow them anywhere. 

Next week’s episode is the big crossover event between CW’s two superhero series — and it looks like more fun than the big screen’s Batman v Superman can possibly be. I’m digging both of these shows, so the Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup of them together? I may need to buy new pants.

As always, “Five & Three” brings you my favorite things in comics this week. Every week I pick my five favorite covers and three favorite panels to create “Five & Three”. I like to talk about why I picked the covers and panels and welcome hecklers and trend setters alike. 

Fans of amazing comic book covers and panels on a weekly basis rejoice, “Five and Three” isn’t going anywhere. In fact, we’re moved it to Monday! See what you should have been reading last week before new books drop this Wednesday. With the information out of the way, let’s move onto the books! 

The variant by Middleton for “Justice League #36” was one of the highlights of the week. Is it just me, or does Shazam look like he’s a button masher?

How many of you are fans of “Bob’s Burgers”? How many of you knew there was a comic book to satiate you during the wait for Sunday night?

The cover to “Deadpool #37” is apparently influenced by the goings on in Axis. Deadpool is now a sort-of pacifist but if you’re like me and haven’t read it, all you need to know is Deadpool Yin Yang and you’re good to go.

Here is yet another creator owned book Image is publishing and the indie realm continues to deliver on fantastic covers. This week’s honors from Image go out to “Intersect #1”. The moody watercolor images that splash against one another mesmerized me into picking this over all others.

Of course, the indie world isn’t just Image books. “Run by the Gun #3” by RBG Entertainment has to be one of the coolest covers I’ve seen all year. When we take a look back at the books and moments from 2014, this cover is in the top running to take one of the top 10 places.

I saved the best thing for last but many of you will think I’m nuts so here is some spectacular “The Amazing Spider-Man” from issue 10.

I talked about Albert Monteys “Universe! #1” from Panel Syndicate being released last week over here. It joins the rarified ranks of excellence coming from Panel Syndicate. I can’t stress enough how you need to read this book so just check out The Big Bang by Monteys below and then go download it from PanelSyndicate.com.

Grant Morrison is a cool guy. His trippy lectures on upper dimensional beings and psychotropic trips to the mind where he communes with a higher intelligence are fascinating. I’ve been on a bit of kick with these kinds of tales lately. In fact, Neil Degrasse Tyson explained the ending to “Interstellar” on Youtube where in he describes being able to view time from a higher dimension as a cardinal direction. In it Tyson says we would be able to see our life and death and everything in between all at once because it’s “always” happening when viewing time as such. Morrison rocked my mind with this Captain Atom bit from “Multiversity Pax Americana #1” this week as he puts Tyson’s theory into a 2D realm of comic books. Mr. Morrison, I’ll owe you a beer if you keep making these DMT derived mind F#cks.

‘The Flash’ Episode 1.6 “The Flash is Born” (7 out of 10) Starring Grant Gustin, Candice Patton, Rick Cosnett, Danielle Panabaker, Carlos Valdes, Tom Kavanaugh, and Jesse L. Martin. Guest starring Greg Finley. Tuesdays on The CW.

“The Flash” continues to be my favorite of the many superhero series on television right now. Favorite enough that even when it’s a weaker episode, there are parts of it that redeem the rest. That’s the case with this sixth episode, ‘The Flash is Born.’ You may be thinking, “Hey, the Flash was born like six episodes ago when he was struck by lightning generated by the particle accelerator at S.T.A.R. Labs, possibly engineered by Dr. Harrison Wells, who has mysterious knowledge of future events, and may have done it for some nefarious purpose!” Yes. All of that is how Barry Allen became The Flash. Except in Central City, and on Iris West’s blog, he’s been known as The Streak. Which Barry hated. So, using his charm with his near-sister/crush Iris, he pitches the name “The Flash,” and gets the name he wants. All that does is explain the title. Now that that’s out of the way, here’s what happens in the episode.

He kicks Barry’s ass in flashbacks, in the present, whenever he wants to

This is a typical “Freak of the Week” episode, and this particular freak is one of the newer (21st Century instead of Silver Age) Flash villains, Girder. Turns out Girder is actually Tony Woodward, a bully from Barry and Iris’ elementary school years. In the same “accident” that gave Barry his superpowers, Tony gained the ability to become living metal. In the comic books, Girder is a grotesque, semi-rusted behemoth–the CW’s version is a hot muscley guy whose skin turns into metal, ala X-Men’s Colossus. And he’s still a bully. But now made out of metal. He kicks Barry’s ass several times. In flashbacks, in the present, whenever he wants to. Turns out he also has a little crush on Iris, so he ends up threatening her, and eventually kidnapping her. Like superpowered bullies do.

The kidnapping brings Iris and the Flash into each other’s orbits yet again, and gives them time to have conversations like “hey, stop writing about me, and you’ll stop getting kidnapped,” “you’re not the boss of me, Streak Guy,” “but I love you and I’ve always loved you,” “what? I thought we just met!” “no, I…I can’t disclose my secret identity!” …like that. But with more CW-fueled angst. 

Girder’s story may be driving the episode, but the more important things are happening around the edges of that story. Detective West has reopened the investigation into Nora Allen’s murder. Barry’s dad has been in prison for the last fifteen years for the murder, which Barry has always maintained was committed by a “whirlwind of lightning with a yellow man inside.” Now that West has seen the Flash in action — a man in lightning — he’s finally willing to look deeper into that story. That brings him back to Dr. Wells and S.T.A.R. Labs, it makes him ask some pointed questions, it sets him in the right direction. Eventually, it causes a visit from that yellow-suited lightning dude, who any DC Comics fan knows is Professor Zoom, AKA “Reverse Flash.” He’s from the future, he’s got Barry Allen’s powers, and he’s a lil bit of a psychopath. We only see him for a few seconds, at the end of the episode, but it’s definitely him. 

Is Harrison Wells the true Professor Zoom?

It’s him, but who is it? In the comic books, Professor Zoom is usually Eobard Thawne. Detective West’s too-handsome partner is Eddie Thawne, who we’ve always assumed has a future in that yellow supersuit. What if it’s not? Dr. Harrison Wells pretends he’s wheelchair-bound, although he’s not. He has knowledge of future events, and has more than a casual interest in pushing Barry to his limits. He’s got a sinister edge that isn’t quite explained yet, while Eddie Thawne…is just kinda a handsome foil to Barry and Iris pursuing a relationship. What if Thawne is just a pawn (and will spawn a…lawn…this isn’t working), and Wells is the true Professor Zoom? It’s something I hadn’t considered before last night’s episode. It would explain Wells knowing enough to attack West at home as Professor Zoom, taking the files on the Nora Allen case; of course, Wells could also be working in concert with Professor Zoom, dispatching him to the West home. Also, and I just have to say this, if you want to be taken seriously as a psychopath, don’t use the code name “Professor Zoom.”

I’m enjoying this series, and the idea that they may have changed the identity of a major villain to make an enjoyable red herring doesn’t bother me in the least. If they can make an episode with a mediocre A-plot this interesting, I’ll trust where they’re going. This episode also teased the coming of Heat Wave (a classic Flash villain who works with Captain Cold and other Rogues) in his New 52 incarnation — “a man on fire who doesn’t burn,” instead of his old version, a dude in a white hazmat suit with a flame thrower. When I first saw all of the villains and ancillary characters they were putting into this series, I was worried. Too much, too soon. Seeing how they’re doing it–I like it. There’s less puttering around than there was on “Smallville,” or even on “Arrow,” which has been pretty fast-paced. Even at its weakest, this show is doing everything right, and now they can even call him what he’s been all along–the Flash. 

‘The Flash’ Episode 1.5 “Plastique” (9 out of 10) Starring Grant Gustin, Candice Patton, Rick Cosnett, Danielle Panabaker, Carlos Valdes, Tom Kavanaugh, and Jesse L. Martin. Guest starring Kelly Frye and Clancy Brown. Tuesdays on The CW.

“The Flash” was a rerun last week, which was a shame. I mean, I enjoy election night coverage as much as the next guy, but I really would have rather been hanging out with the Scarlet Speedster than political pundits. This week’s episode brings not just one, not just two, but three DC Comics villains into the DC television universe. Ostensibly the most important one is Bette San Souci, AKA Plastique. I mean, that’s the title of the episode, she’s the hottie who drives much of the episode, but she’s not as important as others we meet later.  

Plastique is important, and instead of being a straight-up supervillain, we see that she’s a veteran from Afghanistan who was in a Central City hospital when the accident at S.T.A.R. Labs exploded. Like many others, she ended up with superpowers. Bette’s is that she can infuse objects with explosive energy with a touch. So she holds a frisbee, and the frisbee turns into a bomb. A golf ball, a bomb. A sandwich–wow, her life must suck. But she has really really good hair. She’s a more sympathetic character than I expected. I know Plastique primarily as a member of the Suicide Squad, and she’s also a villain who fought against the superhero Firestorm. She’s always on the verge of being a good guy, but here that’s more evident than usual. I liked it more than just a mustache-twirling villain. 

“The Flash” makes “Gotham” seem downright dismal

That villain is embodied in General Wade Eiling. Played here by Clancy Brown (best known to me as the voice of Lex Luthor in various animated projects), he’s commanding a military team collecting metahumans, and Plastique is on his list. He’s got a cool intellect, he’s got power, he’s got a history with Dr. Harrison Wells. Wells has more screen time in this episode, and he continues to develop as one of the most interesting characters in the series. .He’s got some knowledge of the future, but we’re not exactly sure how, or what his real agenda is. He spurs Plastique toward a showdown with Eliing, but we’re not exactly sure why. All of the S.T.A.R. Labs support team are moving forward in their individual stories, and whether it happens in this first season or comes later, they’re each going to be transforming into heroes and villains in their own right. They bring more humor and humanity into “The Flash” than we see on “Arrow,” and make “Gotham” seem downright dismal. Actually, it’s “Gotham” that makes “Gotham” dismal, but that’s Batman’s problem. 

The Flash himself has some interesting developments during the episode — he’s becoming more public (known as “The Streak,) which has to change soon), partially thanks to his not-girlfriend Iris writing blog posts about him. He confronts her both in costume and out, trying to keep her safe. For those of us who are Flash nerds, he also demonstrated several new powers in this episode–the ability to run up the sides of buildings, run on water, and vibrate his vocal cords super fast to disguise his voice. He also did his face-vibratey thing to blur his features to protect his identity, and he can’t get drunk. It’s a rough life for Barry Allen. 

This continues to be an entertaining series, with more forward momentum than any of the other superhero TV series airing right now. Barry’s a likable guy, the heroism is good, the villains are entertaining, and it’s just getting better with each episode. It’s a well-plotted series, with arcs building and seeds being planted for future events. Catch up with “The Flash” while you can. 

Oh yeah. Gorilla Grodd. That should be good.

This week was big for news, movies, trailers, “Star Wars” fans, and yes, for comic book fans too. I’ve done my best to break down the moments I got to and some that I didn’t to bring you my favorite things in comics this week. Starting us off strong for the month of November is the whimsical “Fairy Quest: Outcasts #1” by Humberto Ramos. The writing in the book is by Paul Jenkins and BOOM! Studios is publishing it. I have to say that, although Image is still the king of indie comic books, BOOM! has quickly become one of my favorite places for comics.

DC Comics had some wonderful comic book covers this week. if I could have grabbed a great photo of the final issue of Scott Snyder and Jim Lee “Superman Unchained #9” I would’ve certainly included it. That being said, the cover to “Green Lantern #36” by Alex Sinclair and Billy Tan stands shoulder to shoulder with the likes of a cover by Jim Lee Alex Sinclair and Scott Williams.

The perspective for the cover to “The Last West #8” is wonderful. I’m a big fan of Alterna and the books they publish but I haven’t a clue what’s inside the wonderful cover to this book. A quick glance at the past covers though, indicates there is a great artist on art duties for “The Last West”.

The latest book to pique my interest from Image is “Tooth & Claw” by Kurt Busiek and Ben Dewey. The book is another wonderful addition to Image’s line and more evidence that magic happens when you let comic book creators stretch their capabilities to their limits.

The haunting variant cover to “Death of Wolverine: Life After Logan #1” by Julian Totino Tedesco is my favorite for the week. I’m making the assumption that the cover is digitally painted in an oils style because that’s the industry norm but I couldn’t tell the difference if you forced me to. The work is excellent and makes one wonder why the amazing variant art isn’t chosen as the regular cover when it’s this great.

I can’t say enough good things about the BOOM! Studios published “Day Men”. This issue launches right off of the back of the recent collected trade for issues #1-#4. Stay tuned for an in depth review of this series right here on Big Shiny Robot.

“God Hates Astronauts #3” is the funniest book I read this week. Ryan Browne is creating something special in as much as he is creating something entirely shit nuts. I wasn’t a supporter of this book from the get go, it took me a second read through to love issue #1 but I’m fully engaged now. I still am not quite sure what’s going on with the multiple threads Browne is weaving but as long as the jokes stay ripe, I’m in for a monthly bite.

I told the world that Jake Parker was going to be the artist working in collaboration with Skottie Young while the writer/artist took a short break from both creative duties on Rocket Raccoon. I also told the world that Jake Parker’s art is fantastic. I also reporting seeing the nine of Parker’s inked pages from “Rocket Raccoon #5”. This page with the sword was one I was waiting to see in a book the most. Parker told me he had requested that Young put a huge sword in the book for Rocket and it works wonderfully. The fully colored page by Skottie Young’s long time and insanely talented colorist Jean-Francois Beaulieu pops. If there were any doubters that Parker was going to throw off the momentum this book Skottie built they are now certainly eating their words.

Happy Birthday Ma! 

As always, “Five & Three” brings you my favorite things in comics this week. Every week I pick my five favorite covers and three favorite panels to create “Five & Three”. I like to talk about why I picked the covers and panels and welcome hecklers and trend setters alike. 

Happy Halloween edition of “Five and Three”! With that in mind, let’s start off with “Boo! Halloween” From Monkey Brain comics.

Next up is a wonderful cover from “Ciudad” by Andre Parks, Anthony Russo, Joe Russo and art by Fernando Leon Gonzalez. Cuidad is a another wonderful creator owned title from Oni Press. Oni is a demon in Japan so that’s perfect for this spooky time of year!

Batman is a must for any Halloween so I’m including him from the cover to the very cool “The New 52 Futures End #26”.

I have loved the cover to “Elecktra #7” since I first set eyes on it. The masked feel is another wonderful cover for the season.

The last cover this week is in honor of the end to Brian Azzarello and Cliff Chiang’s wonderful run on Wonder Woman with “Wonder Woman #35”. The ending was perfect but this monster cover is perfect for the season.

In panels I’m giving you a peek behind the curtain of the book that tells the story of how Thanos, Drax, and Starlord escaped the Cancerverse over in “Guardians of the Galaxy #20”.

Saga goes away until 2015 with a spectacular fast forward issue. Lying Cat has one of his best moments in comics in the latest issue so go get it. Don’t forget though, that the limited edition hard cover comes out next month. That edition is perfect for gifts and for anyone who wants to share “Saga” with friends or family.

The last panel this week is from the magically dark “Rasputin #1” from Image comics. I am very excited for this book and it’s a nice refresh from the sci-fi that seemed to be taking over creator owned titles in the last year.

Your treat is the variant to “All-New X-Men #33”:

There are two times of year it’s most exciting to be a fan of the DC Super Heroes line of LEGO sets. One is June, when a new wave of LEGO sets is released; the other is January. When a new wave of LEGO sets is released. This coming January I’m more excited than usual, because LEGO is finally breaking away from its Batmania that started in 2006. At this point we’ve seen over a dozen different Batman villains (each of whom I love in their own special way), and at least that many different Batman minifigures (who I also love, but think there should be more Robins, Nightwings, Batgirls, Commissioner Gordon…you get the idea). LEGO has had a broader DC Comics license for a few years now, and this winter they’re finally expanding their ranks with a proper Justice League line of LEGO sets. This is a preview of four of the five sets we’ll be getting at the beginning of January. The price has been made public for the Green Lantern set–all of the others are my estimates based on the number of LEGO pieces and minifigures included. 

Green Lantern vs Sinestro 174 pieces, $19.99

Minfigures: Green Lantern (Hal Jordan), Sinestro, Space Batman

I’ll probably say this about every set, but this is one I’ve been looking forward to for a long time. LEGO released their only Green Lantern minifigure as an exclusive at San Diego Comic Con a few years back, and it’s bugged me ever since. They made him a character in last spring’s “The LEGO Movie,” but still no minifig. So he’s long overdue, and as a key member of the Justice League, it’s about frigging time. The set is a “Green Lantern spaceship” built using mostly green and transparent green pieces to look like one of his ring constructs. There’s also a Green Lantern power battery inside a protective forcefield of some kind. The minifigures are a Hal Jordan Green Lantern and a Sinestro Corps-uniformed Sinestro. There’s also Batman in a spacesuit, which is a new variant of Batman we haven’t had before. A great set at a fair enough price point that Certain Obsessed Fans will probably buy multiples of to grow their Green Lantern Corps and Sinestro Corps. Really, I wish they had added one alien Green Lantern, like Tomar Re or Kilowog instead of Batman, but hey. Batman sells. 

Gorilla Grodd Goes Bananas 347 pieces, approx $39.99

Minifigures: Flash, Batman, Wonder Woman, Gorilla Grodd, Captain Cold, Truck Driver

This set has more minifigures than any of the others in this series, including the sets with twice the number of LEGO pieces and twice the price. So if you’re in it for the little dudes, this might be one to look at. The Flash-themed set has Flash, Wonder Woman and Batman teaming up to fight two of the Flash supervillains, Gorilla Grodd and Captain Cold. There’s also a hapless truck driver who was driving a banana truck before Grodd lost his shit. See, he’s an ape, and…never mind. Grodd himself is what LEGO nerds have started calling “bigfigs” — characters like the Hulk who are still supposed to be humanoid-shaped, but are too large to be adequately realized as a traditional minifigure. I like them, even though sometimes they end up looking grossly out of scale to the other characters. Grodd looks like a generic huge gorilla, without his sometimes-traditional mind control cap or purple cape. I like him that way. Flash and Batman are both pretty much what you’d expect, as is Captain Cold. Batman does come with a big-ass Bat-mech, which I believe is the first time we’ve seen one of those. Kinda digging it. Wonder Woman comes with her invisible jet, which is something I’ve been looking forward to forever…and then I saw it, and was underwhelmed. And a little pissed off. I mean, this is finally the invisible jet we’re going to have, and the only one we’ll ever get…and it’s this?? I mean…that’s not even shaped like a jet! It took my ten year old son pointing out to me that they made it a “W” shape like the Wonder Woman logo for me to get behind it. I’ve almost accepted it. Almost. It’s also the “New 52” version of Wonder Woman, with a slightly different costume than the classic WW; if you’re looking for that, you can pick her up right now at Amazon in a $15 set that also includes Superman and Lex Luthor in an awesome armored mech. You should do that. Before it goes away forever.

Black Manta Deep Sea Strike 387 pieces, approx $49.99

Minifigures: Aquaman, Black Manta, Batman, Scuba Robin

This is a set I never thought I’d see. Aquaman’s a personal favorite superhero of mine (I’ve dressed up like him at least three times)(recently)(like last week), and anything that gets an Aquaman minifigure out there is great. But I never thought I’d see Black Manta. Manta is Aquaman’s nemesis, and I dig his freaky helmet, his submarine, his robotic voice, his murdering of Aquababy…love that guy. Anyway. This gets us the Manta submarine, classic versions of Aquaman and Black Manta, and a new Batsub, Batman, and Scuba Robin. There’s a small “Penguin vs Batman” set that has Batman in scuba gear, so if you want your dynamic duo to match, pick that up now. Plus it has a kickass Rubber Duckie vehicle for the Penguin. You can’t go wrong. 

Darkseid Invasion 545 pieces, approx $69.99

Minifigures: Superman, Green Arrow, Cyborg, Hawkman, Darkseid

The largest set revealed so far features a Justice League Javelin — a spaceship introduced in the “Justice League” cartoons that’s had some staying power. It gives us another bigfig in Darkseid, with Justice Leaguers Superman, Green Arrow, Cyborg and Hawkman teaming up to stop him. Darkseid’s on a hover sled of some kind, but going it solo; in my opinion he should have a pair of parademons helping him out. And Kalibak. And Desaad. And Steppenwolf. And Granny Goodness. And the Furies. And…you get the idea. But hey, it’s one of Superman’s archenemies, and since we’ve been fighting the inmates of Arkham Asylum for a decade, it’s about frigging time that Kryptonian got his. Cyborg and Hawkman came out of left field for me, because they both require newly sculpted headpieces, which is something LEGO doesn’t do lightly. They’re here, and I’m happy. Would I have liked to add Hawkgirl to that mix? Heck yes. Will I cry into my pillow about it at night? Maybe. 

Brainiac Attack (number of pieces, price unknown)

Minifigures: Superman, Supergirl, Martian Manhunter, Brainiac

The final set we don’t know much about. It will be a LEGO Store exclusive, which can be bought at the brick and mortar LEGO Stores, or online at LEGO.com. We know it has at least the characters listed above, but possibly others as well. My hope is that it has a version of Brainac’s Skull Ship. Because if not, it’s a wasted opportunity to introduce an iconic vehicle from the DC Universe. Bring it.

I could list characters for hours that should or could be included; I’d really like Wonder Woman’s archenemy Cheetah to be included, I’d like more female superheroes like Hawkgirl, Black Canary and Zatanna, they need more of this or that–but this is a damn good start. They’ve gone from having an all-Batman lineup to a more comprehensive roster…with three new Batman variants thrown in. Because the reality is, Batman is Batman, and kids will bug Mom and Dad to buy him before they will the fishy guy in orange and green tights. But those kids will play with the fishy guy, and the bird guy, and the guy who runs fast, and the lady in the transparent, but not quite invisible, plane. And they’ll love them.
