Five and Three

As always, “Five & Three” brings you my favorite things in comics this week. Every week I pick my five favorite covers and three favorite panels to create “Five & Three”. I like to talk about why I picked the covers and panels and welcome hecklers and trend setters alike.

From one comic book movie weekend into another, “Five and Three” keeps rolling on. The “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” movie isn’t my favorite thing in comics this week because I haven’t had a chance to see it yet. If you’d like to know how I feel on it you can read both Neverbot’s positive review and CitizenBot’s very negative review. My opinion will probably fall somewhere in between the two.

Starting us out on a strong note is “Batman ‘66” digital issue #40 with a spectacularly big, shiny bat robot. If you’re reading this Paul Rivoche (the artist on the book), thank you!

Five and Three - Batman '66 digital issue #40

Next is a juxtaposed delight for the eyes from Ryan Sook as he fills in on the cover to DC’s weekly look at the future of The New 52 in “The New 52: Futures End” #14. Brandigirlio helpd me whittle down to this issue but I had to explain it was Barda fighting Deathstroke and not Wonder Woman. She didn’t care about that though, only that there was one more bad ass lady hero fighting the good fight in the comic book realm.

Five and Three - The New 52: Futures End #14

From Millicent Barnes Comics I present you with a very cool indie cover to “Mack & Mondo” by S. J. McCune. I’m not a huge cat fan but if McCune drew them all I might be. You can find his wonderful book at the rock bottom price of $.099 cents from your favorite digital comics retailer.

Five and Three - Mack & Mondo

I’ve always been a fan of Stan Sakai. His art in the “47 Ronin” comic from last year was one of my favorite stories of 2013. He is taking his character Usagi Yojimbo far into the future with “Usagi Yojimbo: Senso”. With the first cover to the six part mini-series he is also taking comic book fans on a journey of visual delight.

Five and Three - Usagi Yojimbo: Senso 1 of 6

My favorite cover of the week goes to Marvel’s “Figment” #3 by John Tyler Christopher. It’s one of the most original and charming covers I’ve seen all year. I’ve had no interest in Figment up to this point but with covers like these I’m about to make the dive. Wish me luck, although I doubt I’ll need it.

Five and Three - Figment #3

Art Baltazar can make anything meant for kids an instant buy for adults. His simple cartooning in “Tiny Titans: Return To the Treehouse” #3 is every bit of the word perfection. It also helps that book is enjoyable on all levels with jokes and gags for all-ages to enjoy.

Five and Three - Tiny Titans: Return to the Treehouse #3

Another artist that elevates everything he puts pen to is Skottie Young. If you’re not reading the new “Rocket Raccoon” book that he is writing and drawing you’re missing out. Young’s “Rocket Raccoon” is so mystifyingly good you’ll think the comic was enchanted.

Five and Three - Rocket Raccoon #2

I’m posting both Phil Noto’s and Mitch Gerad’s interpretation of a Punisher and Black Widow moment. The two books, “The Punisher” #9 and “Black Widow” #9, had a cross-over this week courtesy of their shared writer Nathan Edmondson. His high octane spy thriller starring everyone’s favorite female Avengers met up with the action packed, and ultra-realistic, Punisher. In a moment on a boat that’s just about to blow up, the stories synchronize and then split.

Five and Three - The Punisher #9

Reading both books was fun because the point of view is slightly different in each book for the shared time-lines. That being said, I know I’m probably in the minority, but I prefer Mitch Gerads gritty inks and dazzling colors to Noto’s fantastical paints and gorgeous tones. That’s not always the case, but in this shared story line, Gerads past hyper-realistic work on the US Operators spy comic “The Activity”, gave him the edge.

Five and Three - Black Widow #9

That’s all for this week. If you disagree with a pick, let me know in the comments or on Twitter @MarkAvo or on Instagram @TheMarkAvo. If you think I should’ve picked something else or if you have a pick in mind for next week, give me a shout out and let me know. If you’d like to check out more “Five and Three” comic book moments start with “Five and Three” from last week. Until next week, “Go Ninja, Go Ninja, Go!”

‘The Star Wars’ is a NYT #1 bestseller

The collected versions of The Star Wars have scored big for Dark Horse. The trade paperback version has topped the charts of the New York Times Bestseller lists for paperback graphic books, while the hardcover edition has landed in third place in the hardcover graphic books category on the New York Times Bestseller lists.

The trade paperback collection of The Star Wars collects issues #1–#8 for $20. The hardcover edition collects issues #1–#8 and issue #0 of The Star Wars for $40. A deluxe, oversized boxed-set edition containing the entire saga—plus extras—in three foil-stamped, hardcover volumes will be released on August 13!

The Star Wars is the adaptation of the rough-draft screenplay by George Lucas for what would become Star Wars. While containing many similar elements as the final version of the film,  there’s a vastly different story and some characters are quite different from their movie forms. For more info, check out our review of the first issue here!

The Wizeguy: Rules Are Made To Be Broken

Why are we talking about this? We’re not supposed to be talking about this.

Blame it on the social network, the word is out. Fight Club is getting a sequel.

Palahniuk is set to break Durden’s rules again after giving the comic book rights to Dark Horse Comics, which plans to make a 10-issue comic book series based on the bestseller, according to USA Today. Unlike the movie, this one is not going to be an adaptation of the first book but a sequel to both. Like the book, Palahniuk will write the ten-part series. Cameron Stewart, whose drawings appeared in Catwoman & Batman and Robin, will illustrate Fight Club 2.

Palahniuk described a part of the plot of the sequel:

“Fight Club 2 takes place alternately in the future and the past. It picks up a decade after the ending of his original book, where the protagonist is married to equally problematic Marla Singer and has a 9-year-old son named Junior, though the narrator is failing his son in the same way his dad failed him.”

He also added:

“Tyler is something that maybe has been around for centuries and is not just this aberration that’s popped into his mind,”

Some are already speculating they’re turning Tyler into less of a manifestation of the Narrator’s ego, and more into a supernatural being who had simply possessed the Narrator’s body. I don’t feel this is a correct interpretation.

In case you didn’t understand it, every single person alive has a Tyler in them. Tyler is our egotistical, perfect self. You know how you wish you will do this, or how you would have done this? When you imagine yourself giving a speech charismatically, or when you fix all your problems, when you get the person you’re going after, when you’re the best version of yourself that you can be? That’s Tyler.

What Palahniuk means is that this borderline abstract concept — named Tyler for simplicity’s sake, for his character is an allegory — has been around for centuries for people. Actually, he’s been around since the dawn of time, since people started to think, even remotely. Every single person has a Tyler in them. Every single person since the dawn of humanity.

But why a sequel? And why now?

This doesn’t sound like a cash grab, just an artist following his muse. And as an artist, you have to allow yourself to fail. The quickest way to never doing anything is to constantly edit yourself and tell yourself no to every creative idea. You have to just follow your inspiration, and accept that sometimes you will fall on your face and that’s okay. Artists who try to play it safe and only be successful end up either not producing anything or the equivalent of easy listening music and Dan Brown books. I hope more authors and filmmakers look to comics as a vehicle for stories that studios won’t invest in.

I am intrigued about Palahniuk’s new insights and how his perspective has changed since release of the original novel/the movie. Definitely looking forward to this with an open mind and giving it a chance to amaze me.
Superhero comics are masturbation. Fight Club comics, that’s the answer.

The 10-comic series will be published in May 2015, while Palahniuk’s next novel, Beautiful You, is published in October this year.

Five And Three

As always, “Five & Three” brings you my favorite things in comics this week. Every week I pick my five favorite covers and three favorite panels to create “Five & Three”. I like to talk about why I picked the covers and panels and welcome hecklers and trend setters alike.

What a week for comics huh? The announcements just kept coming in from all over the place. I suppose that’s what happens when it’s a pre-Con weekend but it’s not every week Archie Andrews dies. So, Captain America is soon to be an amalgam of “Batman Beyond” and I for one am very excited to see where Remender takes the characters of Sam Wilson and Steve Rogers. I’m more interested though, in just who this Superior Iron Man character is going to be and if he’ll be clashing with Daredevil. Enough about the Marvel Entertainment announcements though because it’s left some people with a Thor tooth

First up this week is a lovely book from Troutcave Comics. It’s a little independent title called “Sporkman in Time And Space” and it’s written and drawn by John S. Troutman. I laughed when I saw the cover and hopefully you will too. Consider it this week’s bonus cover and this week’s nod toward the indie comics world.

Five and Three - Sporkman in Time and Space

Next up is possibly the cleanest and perfect for a poster cover from the “Adventure Time” team since the book began. The book has an art team a mile long but don’t think that’s to hit deadlines. The book is all-ages for a reason and including multiple artists is a great way of keeping the attention of the older aged crowd.

Five and Three - Adventure Time #30

Here is a tone change from the fun covers by moving to a more seriously toned book with the variant cover to “Life With Archie” #36. In case you live under a rock, Archie Comics let Paul Kupperberg and Pat and Tim Kennedy kill Archie. Sure it’s in a parallel time line but that time line allows for some great stories that would otherwise not be possible to see print. The book is phenomenal to anyone who is a long-time Archie fan but more importantly it’s a great story on life and death and how friends deal with the death of someone they love who was so full of life. Next months issue will transport the Rivendale crew a year into the future and I think that’s what I liked the most about this particular variant from Ramon Perez. I would hope that when I’m gone there will be a group of friends and loved ones who will gather together, have a few drinks and reminisce.

“Elektra” #4 by Michael Del Mundo is just one gorgeous rendition of Elektra. Her eyes and the perfect reflection in her sai is proof that women can be sexy in comics without the image having to be exploitative.

Five and Three - Elektra #4

Another image with a beautiful woman on the cover comes from Jamie McKelvie for the creator owned book from Image Comics “The Wicked + The Divine”. This cover to issue #2 is so very slightly surreal. The colors, like on the previous cover to issue #1, are spectacularly picked. The gaze of her eyes draws the viewer in because of the stark black and blue eye shadow surrounded by the warmer colors of her hair and skin. The inside of the book is just as great and worth picking up for anyone who is a fan of the super-natural and/or the writing style of Kieron Gillen.

Five and Three - The Wicked + The Divine

My favorite cover this week has to be from the new “Teen Titans” book from Marvel Comics. The New 52 has been subtly included with a cover that is half web page, half comic book. The book is certainly hitting the hip and young image it’s going for with the creators names being included as @Twitter avatars but the crisp green and the wonderful colors of the “Teen Titans” team brings the entire thing home for me. The short version for why I picked it is I think the cover is cool and it’s a great thing for DC to allow some fresh creativity in their cover designs. #KeepItUp

Five and Three - Teen Titans #1

On to the panels and the first set I’d like to highlight for you is from the Dark Horse comic book “Eye of Newt” #2. The book is written and beautifully illustrated by Michael Hague. Most people will remember the art style from “The Hobbit” and if you were wondering whether it was the same you’d be correct if you thought it was. Michael Hague is a legendary illustrator and his skill in this book is on full display. This is a book I knew my wife @Brandigirlio would love. She’s usually a fan of horror comics but a little known fact is that she’s the one who bought the tickets to first screenings of each one of Peter Jackson’s Tolkien films. If you know someone who has wanted to get into comics but is more into fantasy than action heroes, tell them about “Eye of Newt”.

Five and Three - Eye of Newt #2

The next panel I found amazing was from Dan Slott’s “Silver Surfer” #4 with art by Mike and Laura Allred. I could have picked anything from this book including the cover but I loved Mike’s penciled Guardians so much I knew they’d have to be my pick this week.

Five and Three - Silver Surfer #4

The last set of panels for the week from “Robin Rises: Omega” #1 makes me happy because Morrison’s Batman arc is officially part of the New 52 Canon. Sure his “Batman Inc.” was completed in the New 52 DC Universe but now the rest of it is officially included. Also, I’ll admit here publically that I like Damian and I’m excited at the prospect of getting him back. If you think I’m crazy please send complaints to Brian Williams care of NBC at 30 Rockefeller Center New York, New York.

‘Star Wars: Darth Maul – Son of Dathomir #3’

The Dark Side takes a break from in-fighting to repel the outside threat of the Jedi! At the end of the last issue, Maul appeared to have captured both Count Dooku and General Grievous, and now he’s ready to dictate terms to Darth Sidious. But the Jedi might just get in the way of his plans. Spoilers ahead for Star Wars: Darth Maul – Son of Dathomir #3 (DarkHorse.com profile).

Summary: With both Dooku and Grievous under his control, Maul tries to negotiate with Sidious, who would rather write off his minions than deal to get his pawns back. So Maul and Mother Talzin try to convince Dooku that switching sides is in his best interest, but during their talks, Republic forces led by Obi-Wan Kenobi and Tiplee arrive at the asteroid base, having traced the Mandalorians from the recent battle on Ord Mantell. With the Jedi closing in, Dooku decides to join Maul and the pair take the fight to the Jedi, now reinforced by Aayla Secura and Mace Windu. With Dooku’s clandestine help, Grievous escapes in the commotion. Tiplee is killed, the bad guys escape, and the Jedi report to the Chancellor that that Dooku and Maul might be the Sith Lords they’ve been seeking out all this time – even if there’s no answer to why they were previously fighting each other.

Review: With the style of this comic not like the style of the cartoon series, it might slip to the wayside that this is a continuation of the animated series – but then Tiplee’s appearance brings it back together (She was seen in the season 6 story arc about Order 66). The conflict so far in this series has been among various dark side groups, but in this issue, the Jedi finally also get into the action, forcing Maul and Dooku into a quick alliance of survival, though it seems unlikely that Dooku is willing to betray his master, even if he does know deep in his heart that his master would dispose of him in a second if a better apprentice appeared. Not sure if bringing in the Jedi into this conflict is what this story needed, but it does push the plot into a new direction: misleading the Jedi into thinking that they’ve identified the Sith Lords behind everything. And that could have some interesting consequences.

The writing by Jeremy Barlow works great – he must have had some tough choices in deciding what to cut to translate from tv script to comic book page, and the art captures the action well.  There’s some good tension at the big revelation as Mother Talzin tells her side of the story of Sidious and Maul. I can hear Talzin’s creepy voice as I read her words, and that’s due to some great storytelling and artistry – with pencils by Juan Frigeri, inks by Mauro Vargas, colors by Wes Dzioba, and letters by Michael Heisler.

Beyond the pages with spectral Mother Talzin, some of my other favorite panels are of Grievous springing out of his jail cell and taking on the Mandalorians guarding him; and of course the battle between the Jedi and the Sith. Good stuff all around. Plus that cover by Chris Scalf: great likenesses and great lighting from the darksaber!

One more issue to go? Say it ain’t so!

First Look at ‘Usagi Yojimbo: Senso’ #1

Stan Sakai is a multiple Eisner winner. He is a community friend to artists and writers and he is a fan favorite to comic book readers from the last three and a half decades. He also knows how to spin an amazing tale and he’s doing just that for his classic character everyone knows even if they’re not a reader. Even people not in the comics world recognize the bunny samurai from pop-culture such as the guest appearances of Usagi in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated universe. In Stan’s new story the character Miyamoto Usagi is now twenty years older in the future. He is still fighting the good fight but in this samurai story, fans will see the destiny of their favorite characters such as Usagi.

Usagi is a general for a powerful Lord Noriyuki who is in conflict with a devious and evil Lord Hikiji. In the final battle as Miyamoto fights for victory a mysterious metal rocket crashes onto the battlefield and what emerges becomes an enemy of both sides that possibly neither side can defeat. For an special look at the book check out the preview from Dark Horse below the solicit and don’t forget to leave a comment or reach out to us on Twitter if you’re looking forward to this anniversary story from master story teller Stan Sakai.

‘Star Wars: Rebel Heist #3’

Rebel Heist brings the main heroes of Star Wars to the forefront through new eyes and this third issue raises the bar on the point-of-view character. Chewbacca is the focus of this issue, and the adventure with Chewie is told from his mission partner, a defected stormtrooper. Spoilers ahead for Rebel Heist #3 (DarkHorse.com profile)!

Rebel Heist cover

Each issue of Rebel Heist has brought us a fresh face to serve as the issue narrator, and we’ve seen Han get captured along with a rookie Rebel, Leia sacrifice her freedom so that a veteran agent can hustle an Imperial code to safety, and now we see that mission continue, with that Imperial code (in the form of a stormtrooper with embedded DNA) getting passed to Chewbacca to infiltrate a backwater Imperial stronghold to use the code. At first the trooper views Chewie as a ferocious animal or brute, but eventually recgonizes what drives the sentient Wookiee agent – not the lofty goals of the Rebellion, but loyalty and friendship. And there’s that smell. This all comes from a trooper who once fought Wookiees on Kashyyyk and now has to trust one with his life.

The pairing of Chewbacca with the former stormtrooper is a great way to bring fresh eyes to the iconic Wookiee hero. It is a key reminder of how impressions can change when former enemies are made allies and how dehumanization in wartime can be overwhelmed by close contact and trust. There’s plenty of action in this issue as Chewie has to rescue the trooper from some natives and then has to deal with the local crime boss to get intel to get them to their final goal – the sewers and control rooms of the Imperial base. The two page spread of Chewbacca making his entrance is pretty epic. Big props to writer Matt Kindt, penciller Marco Castiello, inker Dan Parsons, colorist by Gabe Eltaeb, and letterer Mike Heisler for the team effort on that spread. Some good aliens with the introduction of the Gamorrean crime gang, and a bit of humor as well. Both the Matt Kindt and Adam Hughes covers are solid as well.

This series just gets better and better. Can’t wait for the end. Maybe it shouldn’t end so soon?

‘Star Wars: Darth Maul – Son of Dathomir #2’

The struggle for power between Maul and his former master intensifies in the second issue of Darth Maul: Son of Dathomir! Dooku and Grievous are out to catch Maul and Mother Talzin, but the dark side witch has her own trap to set. Some spoilers ahead as the battle of dark side vs dark side continues!

Darth Maul: Son of Dathomir #2 (DarkHorse.com profile) ratchets up the tension between the rival dark side camps: Darth Sidious, Dooku and General Grievous; and Maul, Mother Talzin, and Maul’s coalition of criminals and mercenaries. Having been recently beaten at his base, Maul regroups his forces at Ord Mantell, and Talzin plots with him to set a trap for Dooku. The count, expecting to capture Talzin, finds instead a boatload of Nightbrothers waiting for him, while Maul leads a counterassault in space, disabling the Grievous’ droid army on the ground.

Review: Plenty of action in this issue as the sides gear up for a battle, and then unleash their forces against each other, with Maul’s plan to trap Dooku and Grievous seemingly pulled off. But with Brother Viscus and most of the other Nightbrothers defeated, is the Shadow Collective enough to keep Dooku captured? The story, originally written to be part of a story arc on The Clone Wars, and adapted and written by Jeremy Barlow, only picks up steam as the issue goes along – we regroup from the previous issue and bam! I liked how we see how the Shadow Collective members behave in the heat of battle. There’s also some cool witty banter between Maul and Grievous that I can hear in Sam Witwer’s and Matthew Wood’s voices.

I really liked the art in this issue – there’s some great pieces, as pencilled by Juan Frigeri, inked by Mauro Vargas, colored by Wes Dzioba, and lettered by Michael Heisler. The art style uses some thick lines at times, which works well for Maul and Grievous, but less well for Dooku. There’s a great shot of Grievous ordering the bombardment, and plenty of cool action scenes, in space, on the ground, and with lightsabers and dark side powers. Another cool panel is a first person point of view from Dooku’s perspective in the battle with the Nightbrothers, and the final panel of Maul being touched by Talzin also is quite solid.

The cover is awesome, balancing color and action. But then again I would expect nothing less from Chris Scalf.

You gotta get this series!

‘Star Wars #18’ by Brian Wood

Leia’s big wedding day gets some unwelcome fireworks as the Imperial fleet shows up on Arrochar, and the Rebels realize they’ve been double-crossed. But this bride is packing a blaster – will it be enough to survive the onslaught of the Empire’s troops? Spoilers ahead.

Star Wars #18 (DarkHorse.com profile) concludes the storyline on Arrochar – Leia was to marry Prince Kaspar as a way to secure an alliance with the world of Arrochar as a home for a Rebel Base. But Luke gets sent off with their mountain rangers on a symbolic mission, which ends with Luke realizing Arrocharian treachery with Obi-Wan’s help – they’ve called the Empire on Leia’s wedding day, and a bomb has ripped through the royal palace. Caught by this deception, will our heroes elude capture?

Star Wars #18

Review: It’s been a while since I’ve reviewed the ongoing Star Wars series by Brian Wood. Some of that was real life and some of that was a bit of fatigue with the series. But I’m back for the ending and we have X-Wings flying over a Disneyesque castle. And the Rebels triumph, at least enough to escape. And the traitors are made to pay. And yay, Mon Mothma and Leia take on squads of soldiers. boo – it’s mostly offscreen. So what’s not to like? Their salvation (Mon Mothma’s secret project) is a bit deus ex machina to me. We do get some setup for Hoth here, with Vader vowing to be there in person to make sure things don’t get screwed up again, and the use of the Rebel’s secret project: planetary ion cannons. Most of the surface and fighter battles feels like we see the beginning, then we just skip to the end, and miss out on the action, but I suppose they are saving the main action for the big fireworks at the end, in space, against the Imperial fleet. Some lovely panels there of the ship battle.

While I like the look and feel of the Arrochar world (slightly archaic), the art didn’t really catch me – I think part of it was catching the likenesses of the movie characters. Sometimes an artist focuses on slightly different features I’m used to, and then I get stuck by it, and so most of the movie characters just seemed off to me, from the Emperor down to Wedge. But the new characters like Prince Kaspar and the general and the Arrochar soldiers all look fine, as pencilled by Stéphane Créty, inked by Julien Hugonnard-Bert and colored by Gabe Eltaeb. Their real strength though is the ships and backgrounds. Some great shots of X-Wings in flight, the palace under attack, and the Rebel and Imperial fleets in action.

And there’s the cover art by Víctor Manuel Leza – there’s some great ‘ready for action’ poses that remind of the iconic movie posters but the likenesses of Han and Luke don’t quite feel right – and I’ve always been mystified by Wookiee fingers since they are always nearly covered over with long hair in other shots, but are are clearly seen here. But props for getting Wedge in there with a blaster, and slightly disheveled Leia still looking regal. But Han’s blaster (and his hand) just seem huge, like this is one of those Galactic Hero overproportioned figures.

Star Wars #18 delivers a decent ending to this story arc with some close calls and good action, but doesn’t quite hit all the marks. It just didn’t wow me that way that some other recent Star Wars comics have.
