The Dark Side of Galactic Fashion

The Rebels may be on the light side of history but nobody makes style statements or has a flair for the dramatic quite like the bad guys. They project their power and authority with every garment they don and I would join the Dark Side in a heartbeat if it meant I could have the Empire’s new clothes. The capes, the clean lines, the dark palettes, the stompy boots — I love it all.

As a part-time model and fashionista, I wanted to celebrate the release of The Last Jedi in my own way so I challenged myself to put together this editorial, full of looks inspired by my favorite Dark Side characters and accentuated with lighting and location choices. I stopped short of full cosplay, but I wanted to channel both the appearance and essence of the most formidable Force-users and evil leaders from the Star Wars universe. Plus, I wanted the chance to support the nerdy designers and retailers out there who supply us with clothes and accessories for all our fandom needs.

This is a spoiler-free post, so read to your heart’s content!

Darth Vader

Photographer: Photography by Shivani (Photography by Shivani)

Although he’s not physically in The Last Jedi, Darth Vader’s legacy looms large over Kylo Ren. There was no way I could leave out the most iconic villain in the franchise and possibly the history of cinema, from this collection.

I’m wearing the Darth Vader blazer from ThinkGeek, which is quickly becoming a wardrobe staple. I cannot begin to emphasize how hard it is to find jackets that fit and flatter me while still being practical enough to actually hold my possessions. Those inside pockets are a blessing, let me tell you.

That Death Star interior lining, though!

For this look, I thought it best to cover as much skin as possible to reflect Vader’s full-body suit. I went for neutral makeup, in line with his unmasked appearance to focus on the clothes. I forewent the lightsaber so I could save it for Kylo and so that I could make the most of Vader’s dramatic hand gestures.

“Be careful not to choke on your aspirations, director.”

It’s unusual to see a bespectacled model but I kept my glasses as a reminder that Vader’s suit, as cool as it looks, is designed to keep him alive. I need my glasses to see and I figured that if Vader can carry around an entire life-support machine on his body and still look good, I could wear my specs. Since I don’t have a giant black cape with a chain link fastening, I opted for a simple silver Imperial insignia necklace, which I got at Disney’s Hollywood Studios last summer.

I had so much fun with the studio lighting. Black on black is such a good look and I felt like I was on a Star Destroyer the whole time!

Kylo Ren

Photographer: Pau Martin

The corrupted son of Han Solo and Leia Organa was quite possibly the most fun to shoot, mostly because I got to use a lightsaber for this one. Even though I grew up on Star Wars, I’ve never owned a lightsaber and the reason for that was that I disliked the way that the toys I saw had to be flicked out and didn’t have a consistent blade girth. I also disliked the fact that they didn’t light up the same way that they did in the films; the toy blades lit up all at once as opposed to gradually. I decided that I would wait until I was older, when I’d be in a position to afford better-quality lightsabers. Pretty smart thinking for a kid, right?

In which I try to imitate Adam Driver’s gorgeous posing from his shoot with Vanity Fair.

I’m wearing the Kylo Ren dress by Her Universe, from the 2015 Star Wars line. Although I didn’t realize this until way after the shoot, the look I chose bore an uncanny resemblance to the one on Hot Topic’s website. The fact that we both went for a similarly edgy look may say more about me than it does about Kylo Ren. I added a beautiful First Order necklace that I picked up at Star Wars Celebration this year, and I paired the outfit with a fur-collared shawl in place of Kylo’s cowl/cape. I went with the wig because it’s my natural hair colour and I wanted some variation between looks.

The park we used is supposed to be a stand-in for the forest on Takodana. I also liked that the cathedral was in the background—I thought it would make a nice connection to the Jedi temple.

Supreme Leader Snoke

Makeup Artist: Natasha Troteiro (Glamorous Looks)
Photographer: Alejandro Pinilla Photography (unhobbit)

I just happen to own this 1950s vintage ballgown, which I thought was quite reminiscent of Snoke’s gold robes from The Last Jedi. I thought the age of the dress would work well and would achieve the elegance and faded beauty that I wanted. I also thought it would be cool to have a nod to Disney in this outfit, since there’s something eerily Disney Princess-like about it.

The Art of The Force Awakens notes that Snoke was designed to look like he was quite handsome in his youth. The book also reveals that he was originally intended to be a female character, so there’s room for traditionally feminine styling. In terms of makeup, I asked for a combination of something shimmery and deep to convey an undercurrent of Dark Side energy for a more sombre mood. I thought it would be cool to contrast Kylo’s frenetic power with Snoke’s tempered authority.

A new take on “old man Snoke’s boudoir.”

I wish I had been able to put together a throne room set for Snoke, but maybe next time.

“Fulfil your destiny.”

Captain Phasma

Makeup Artist: Makeup by Susan P (Makeup by Susan)

Photographer: Darryl Pezzack

Captain Phasma was the hardest to style because her mask is so integral to her character. I couldn’t include a mask without distracting from the outfit. So I opted to get creative: I worked with a makeup artist to create a face for Phasma specifically, something that would stand in for her mask and maintain her colour scheme. I added the silver baseball cap and somehow, it worked.

I chose to go with a more urban vibe so that Phasma’s readiness for combat could take center stage and displace the glamor of other characters’ looks.

I’m wearing the Phasma jacket by Her Universe, from the same line as the Kylo Ren dress, and simple black leggings. I briefly contemplated tracking down some silver bottoms but decided against it because it would be nearly impossible to match the gunmetal colour of the jacket, not to mention that I would risk looking like an extra from an 80s music video.

I got these shoes from a consignment store in Toronto.

The shoes were the most extravagant part of the outfit. I chose them because their dominant colour was Stormtrooper white and the metallic finish echoed Phasma’s plated armour without being too over-the-top for an everyday look.

Given that the vast majority of Phasma’s scenes are indoors and I didn’t know any location that resembled a burning, ransacked village, I chose somewhere that would look like the interior of a ship’s hangar or perhaps a weapons vault.

Phasma’s ruthlessness knows no bounds.

I actually commissioned the blaster I used as a prop in this shoot as an accessory to the final outfit shown in this post. I used it again for Phasma because she of all characters needs a weapon on her. It was made by triringer

Bonus round: General Hux

Photographer: Veronikarts (veronica_potyl)

All right, I said I wasn’t going to include cosplay, but I’ve had this costume for over a year now and I’ve worn it at every opportunity that I could possibly find. From convention to classroom to meeting to appointment, I love wearing Hux whenever I can.

General Hux is very busy reviewing the latest intelligence reports and must not be disturbed.

Ever since I first saw The Force Awakens, I wanted to dress up as General Hux. In the summer of 2016, I commissioned Rattle and Burn to make the full thing and it is absolutely beautiful, super comfortable, and perfect for the cold season. Even when I’m not in full costume, I often wear the greatcoat through the winter over my regular clothes.

I chose to shoot at the University of Toronto because the university went through this weird brutalist construction phase in the 70s, which is perfect for the First Order aesthetic.

The 501st Canadian Garrison said that this library is “totally First Order.”

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is in theaters now.

Anime Revolution 2015

Anime Revolution 2015 kicked off today at Canada Place in beautiful Vancouver, British Columbia and I was lucky enough to be in attendance. Brought together by a team of dedicated fans, this year marks the 4th annual event and it has already tripled in size to an estimated 20,000 attendees looking to enjoy anime, manga, games, voice actors, artists, and cosplay. And even though it was a bit rainy, it didn’t stop these dedicated con-goers and cosplayers from getting to the celebration!

Since the convention is located in Vancouver (about 3 hrs north of Seattle), it has become an incredible convergence of Canadian, American and Japanese fans from all over the West Coast; as well as several guests, vendors and industry representatives straight from Japan! This year’s Japanese guests of honor include Yuu Asakawa (Fate/Stay Night, Volcaloid), Nobuyuki Hiyama (Gurren Lagann, Kill La Kill), Minami Takahashi (Shokugeki no Soma, Hi☆sCoool! セハガール), and Japanese singer Kotoko. Fans will also be pleased to see an incredible lineup of North American voice talent including Sugar Lyn Beard (Beyblade, Sailor Moon), Grant George (Fate / Zero, Kill La Kill), Jessica Gee George (Fire Emblem, Sailor Moon), Laura Bailey (Fruits Basket, Full Metal Alchemist), Travis Willingham (Full Metal Alchemist, One Piece), Richard Ian Cox (Inuyasha, Mobile Suit Gundam 00), and Dean Redman (Black Lagoon, Iron Man: Armored Adventures). Personally, I was really excited to see both Japanese and North American voice cast members from Trigger’s excellent Kill La Kill!

 kill la kill 1

The opening ceremonies got things started this morning with a staff-made anime & cosplay music videos and a stellar performance from the convention’s very own Maid Cafe Dancers. I tried to wait in line for their famous Maid Cafe later in the day, but unfortunately haven’t yet been able to make it between panels and other events. Nevertheless, it was a treat to see them put together a couple of fabulously choreographed dances for the opening ceremonies!

Master of Ceremonies Dean Redman let us in on some of this years events including their first rendition of Voice Actor Idol (which, if you’re brave enough to compete in, you can sign up last minute to do a cold-read!). Fan-favorite events include the Cosplay Contest, 18+ Swimsuit Contest, Anime Music Video (AMV) Contest, Worst Cosplay Contest, annual Dance Rave Spectacular and concerts.

If you’re in attendance, you’ll also want to make time for some of the fan panels – in particular some of the following which I haven’t seen at that many conventions: Adventures in Anime on Canadian TV, Cosplay Horror Stories (18+), The Floor is Lava (how parkour informs pop culture), and Mystery Science Fiction (18+ anime-style). I will admit that I also took some time to stop over at the Dance Dance Revolution tournament because I haven’t seen one since 2004 and it made me feel nostalgic.

Well, that’s all for me today, but stick around for more anime coverage and continue scrolling for some of my cosplay photo picks from today’s convention!

Editor’s note: Due to my hectic work schedule, this was the first anime convention I’ve been able to attend in a very long time, and it was a wonderful treat for me to be surrounded by such a friendly and positive group of fans that share a passion for Japanese animation, manga, games, and music. The convention staff went out of their way to be helpful, the venue was clean and big enough to handle the crowd, and everyone seemed to be having an all-around great time. I want to thank everyone I met/photographed and the staff for making this a great convention!

Big Shiny Girlcast: June/July 2015 – Raptorszs

FanX 2015 Cosplay

The 2015 Salt Lake Comic Con FanX event is in the history books but we’d be remiss if we didn’t put up some of our favorite Cosplay from the event. If you follow our Instagram or our Facebook pages then you’re sure to have seen some great Cosplay but for those that prefer to browse the Big Shiny Robot web page itself, here’s some wonderful costumes worn by some exceptionally geeky individuals. Our favorite part about the Salt Lake conventions has been the family friendly atmosphere. You’ll see that represented in the images below.

You’ll also find that most of our Cosplayers take their roles very seriously. In between dancing in the hallways and posing for their glamour shots, these cosplayers did not forget to have a good time. Our bow ties, wigs, helmets and fez’s are off to all the cosplayers that didn’t make this list. If you’d like to be featured in our Cosplay articles in the future be sure to find a Big Shiny Robot at the next convention and then strike a pose.

Anime Banzai 2014 Cosplay – Day 1

If you missed out on the fun Friday or if you were planning on attending for the weekend, here is a sampling of the cosplayers from Day 1. There is still a deviantArt meet up for tomorrow as well as plenty of live podcast recordings. One of the most popular podcasts in geekdom, and possibly the most popular podcast in Utah, “The Geekshow Podcast” will be recording Day 2 in the Zephyr room from 11:30 AM to 2:30 PM. There will be autograph signing later in the afternoon, comic book and Manga lessons from professionals in the industry and then partying all night long in the Eclipse Expo room for the Informal Dance. If that younger crowd isn’t your scene, feel free to stop by and enjoy the convention’s local bar. The party will be exceptional, so don’t miss out.

Anime Banzai 2014 Begins Today

The 2014 Anime Banzai event begins today and continues through Sunday, October 17-19th at the Davis Conference Center in Layton, Utah. This is the 10th anniversary for the event that celebrates Japanese culture in Utah. The event goes long into the night both Friday and Saturday with dances and panels restricted for anyone under 18. Don’t let that fool you though, during the day the event is kid friendly and families are encouraged to attend the festivities.

There are panels on Japanese culture, anime, acting and voice-acting, animation, comic books and manga, foods and even more. There are art contests, anime screenings, cosplay contests and an artist’s alley made up of local artists. The special guests for the year will fill panel rooms. Chris Patton (“Pokemon”, “Inu X Boku SS”), Jan Scott-Frazier (14 years in the Japanese animation industry), Vic Mignogna (“Tiger & Bunny”,”Soul Eater”), Chuck Huber (Actor “Dragonball Z”, “Full Metal Alchemist”), Warky (Singer & lyricist  with “They Might Be Elders”) and Sonny Strait (Krillin in “Dragonball Z”, Comic book artist for “Elfquest”) will be attending the convention and hosting wonderful panels built around their specific expertise.

Make the trip to Layton and have a great time

Pre-registration for the event is obviously closed but single day tickets are still available and people are encouraged to make the trip to Layton and have a great time dancing with the cosplayers outside, attending anime screenings inside, learning something new in the panels, visiting the merchandise booths and artist alley for something amazing, and attending late night parties for a wonderful fall evening.

Big Shiny Robot will be at the event so be on the lookout for Zendobot (Mark Avo), Neverbot (Cassidy Ward), & BSR Anime-bot Gax-bot (Shawn Cogswell). If you think we’ve missed something that we need to let the Internet and the readers of Big Shiny Robot know, let us know. For those that cannot attend, we’ll be featuring Cosplay from the convention and telling you about everything we thought was amazing.

Dragon Con 2014 Recap

In the many years I’ve been attending Dragon Con, a lot has changed. And a lot has stayed the same. Thankfully, having a ridiculously fun time and spending time with great friends and meeting new people has always remained constant as the convention has grown. At its core, Dragon Con is a fan convention where the passion and creativity of the attendees drives its energy and helps it to keep its standing as one of the most popular conventions year after year.

As far as my own experiences went this year, I met Terry Gilliam, Cary Elwes, and . . . Ralph Macchio. I grew up loving “The Karate Kid,” and I used to write in my diary about how in love I was with Ralph Macchio. Meeting him was an epic moment for me, and I have to admit I fangirled a little. But he was so nice and friendly, and he and co-star Martin Kove (Kreese) gave a panel in which they discussed “The Karate Kid” films.

One of the highlights for me personally was reading the part of Yoda in “The Empire Striketh Back” for the Star Wars Track. Director Brandy Roatsey once again did a phenomenal job giving everyone a fun-filled program with trivia, in-depth discussions, and not one but two exciting parties.

And the costumes . . .  every year they impress me more and more.

“Death cannot stop true love. All it can do is delay it for a little while.”  A Dread Pirate Westley found right outside of the Cary Elwes press conference.

I met this costumer in the lobby of our hotel. He walked by and I yelled, Karate Kid! I’d seen him around the convention but hadn’t been able to get a picture. He was nice and stopped for me, and he asked if I wanted him to do the crane kick. But since he was in Daniel-san’s costume from the sequel, I asked if he could do a drum pose instead. He did even better than that–he reached in his bag and got the drum for the picture. I was amazed. Such attention to detail! I had way too much Karate Kid excitement over the weekend.

‘We are no longer the knights who say Ni! We are now the knights who say ekki-ekki-ekki-pitang-zoom-boing!’

And, with my obsession with all things Spielbergian, I hoped to spy some great costumes from his films. Though I saw a few Muldoons (“Clever girl”) and John Hammonds, (“We spared no expense”), they were always on the move and not flocking my way.  However, some friends were kind enough to share their photos as Spielberg characters with me.

In a touching tribute to the late Robin Williams, a group of fans dressed as characters from “Hook” and carried a picture of Williams as Peter Pan. Wade Finch and Becky Cormier Finch are to be credited with the idea. The group consisted of Captain Hook: Tommy Morfoot, Mr. Smee: Joseph “Foe” Davis, Tinkerbell: Penny Carr, and Baseball Player: Doug Grabowski.

And, Carl Cunningham was kind enough to allow me to share his Quint from “Jaws” and Indiana Jones photos taken by Bryan Humphrey.

If these photos are any indication, you can tell that attendees of this year’s Dragon Con had tons of fun. There’s enough variety to interest almost anyone, and it’s impossible to see and do everything in four days. I’m already looking forward to Dragon Con 2015!

Pax Prime: Day 1 Photo Highlights!

Urban Decay’s ‘Pulp Fiction’ Collection

Urban Decay’s Mia Wallace inspired collection became available for purchase on their site last Wednesday, and yours truly made sure to order a few choice items as soon as they became clickable. You know, for science. I did not order every single piece in the collection, but rather went with some staples that would appeal to many different kinds of make-up shoppers.

To get the boring details out of the way, I got the palette for $34 (USD), a Revolutionary Lipstick and a 24/7 Glide-On lip pencil, both in the color “Mrs. Mia Wallace,” for $22 (USD) each. I ordered bright and early Wednesday morning, got free shipping for blowing that much cizzle, and the order was delivered on Friday afternoon.

I’m not going to lie, friends and neighbors. I am quite brand loyal to Urban Decay. They make quality products in fun colors that I am far too old to wear (but I rock the hell out of them anyway). These products are no exception, but the Pulp Fiction palette comes with a bonus selling point that’s actually kind of rare in Urban Decay – only one shade has shimmer.

The colors are richly pigmented, blend like butter, and will work for a no-makeup-y tone evener to a full blown smokey eye on all skin tones. Did I need yet another neutral palette? *guffaws loudly* No. I did not. Would I recommend this to another consumer who is not trying to be a professional and/or does not have a serious makeup purchasing problem? Maybe. But I would definitely recommend this to a makeup newbie, or someone who wants to get the most of out their shelf space. It’s versatile, fun, and quality.

The lipstick has just a hint of sparkle and is a slightly pinky red. It’s a lot less vampy than I expected, but that’s not a complaint. I would definitely wear this to a day job, but I also wore eggplant purple lipstick to an Amish breakfast so maybe I’m not qualified to comment on what’s “appropriate.”

Honestly, the biggest selling point for me? You can do both pre- and post- OD Mia Wallace with the palette, liner, two brushes, and a squirt bottle.

The tribute on the left was done by sweeping Righteous from lid to brow, adding Tyranny from lash to crease, lining the bottom lash line with Vengeance with a little flare, and lining the top lash with Anger. Add a little Furious to the brow bone and inner corner, bada bing bada boom. Sorry my lips are a little smudgy, it was from sipping my five dollar milkshake (that’s a lie, it was a diet Arizona ginseng tea. I just plopped 80 bucks on makeup, I can’t afford a five dollar shake). For post-adrenaline shot Mia, squirt the whole face with a mist of water, then blink like you mean it to smear your mascara and liner everywhere. The drying blood was done with the lip liner and the browns and black shadows, blended with a liner brush. Take a fluffy brush and blend Tyranny and Vengeance for eye bags, detail with some Anger, and add some lip liner to just the inside of your lips. My camera didn’t pick it up, but I used Righteous and Furious for dried vomit in the corners of my mouth. I’m a grownup! Fun fact – the best way to remove Urban Decay eye shadow from your nostrils is with baby oil and a Q-tip.

All things considered, this is a great investment regardless of your desire to wear polished makeup or be a giant kid and have Hallowe’en in July. You can purchase the items at Urban Decay’s site!

Cosplay at The Nerd Store

Cosplay is one of the finest and most enjoyable people watching experiences at any convention. Its popularity over the last decade has exploded to the point that there are online forums, how to videos on YouTube, and local and regional competitions for the hobby. I had the privilege to judge one such competition in West Valley City, Utah. The event was hosted by The Nerd Store inside the Valley Fair Mall that the comic and gaming shop is located. Sponsored by the Salt Lake Comic Con and the Valley Fair Mall, the event had a great turn out and was a wonderful success.

The 2014 summer in Salt Lake City feels almost like a countdown to the second annual Salt Lake City Comic Con. That feeling has not gone away because of officially sanctioned Salt Lake Comic Con events like the cosplay school at the Salt Lake Library and the cosplay competition at The Nerd Store. The crowd that showed up for the competition was made up primarily of fans of the convention. Competitors themselves were there to show off their costumes but also to win a multi-day pass to the Salt Lake Comic Con in September.

J.M. Bell of the “Hold 322” and “The Left Show” podcasts was the master of ceremony for the event. Dressed in a lively kilt and military boots, his jovial behavior and red locks hidden under a cowboy hat made sure the energy level of the crowd stayed high between rounds. There were also some great little games for anyone in the crowd who wanted to participate. The Nerd Store gave away King Kong and Killer Bunnies from “Monty Pythons and The Holy Grail” to participants who acted like the ape or gave their best Killer Bunny death scene on stage.

The local radio station X96 showed up for the event with Utah’s Godfather of Geek Kerry Jackson. Kerry talked to the crowd and filled in time with some great tunes from X96. He and the local television news station ABC 4 Utah got a chance to talk to the co-creator of the Salt Lake City Comic-con and special celebrity judge Dan Farr. Dan Farr spoke to me about judging and politely stepped aside for his creative director Randall Lloyd. Farr said,

“I’m not a fair judge because I like everything. The costumes I’ve seen today are all terrific and many of the characters are some of my favorites. I’ll make sure to talk to the crowd and the cosplayers but Randall can take my place as a judge on the panel.”

Randall Lloyd was one of the six judges from local geekdom to weigh in on what costumes were fun, well made and were crowd pleasers. The other Judges on the panel were Aldo Gomez of The Globe and Examiner.comMandi Russell and Cassandra Givens of the Entertainment Is Dead podcast, Brandigirlio of The Salt City Strangers and me, Mark Avo of this here Big Shiny Robot site. The judges picked the best of the best in Group, Children, Comic Book and Sci-Fi/Movie/Animation categories. Not to be outdone, the Valley Fair Mall and Kerry Jackson of Radio From Hell and theGeekshow Podcast picked Consuela from “The Family Guy” cosplayed by <> for a special award.

The cosplay contest is being called “The first annual, The Nerd Store Cosplay contest” so the expectation for next year is high. With over 35 contestants this year, and with the media coverage and official support of none other than Dan Farr of The Salt Lake City Comic Con, next summer should bring in an even bigger crowd. There is still room to grow in the center stage of the Valley Fair Mall but if the contest grows up as fast as Utah’s little con that could, that won’t be enough room for very long. Continue down below to find pictures of some of the contestants and the winners and check out the both the Entertainment is Dead and the Big Shiny Robot Facebook page even more event photos.
