Star Wars and Volkswagen…

I’ve avoided looking at this because everyone has sent it to me. Volkswagon sent me the press release, but I’ve been on the road and haven’t had a chance to look at it and then in the day after that I’ve had a number of people email it to me, post it on my facebook wall, message it to me on twitter… Sure, I get it, I’m the Star Wars guy, but it was unrelenting.

Well, I caved and finally watched it and I had a smile on my face from ear to ear. (Wired also notes that the little Darth Vader in this piece is actually a girl. And good for them. It makes it twice as adorable.)

This is one of the coolest, most clever, well shot and executed, most adorable, and most effective commercials ever devised.

Good work marketing team behind Volkswagon.

Oh, and I guess it’s playing during some sports game or another tomorrow.

The Sunday Funnies

Many moons ago we had a feature entitled The Sunday Funnies, and now here I am, reviving the old column, bringing you the best in webcomics around the globe.

First we start off with our old pal Garfield, or more so without Garfield.

One of the greatest comics on the web today is the amazing Garfield Minus Garfield. A webcomic dedicated to bringing you Jim Davis comics of Garfield, without the iconic cat which gives it’s namesake.

Instead of the fat cat making life a crazy experience for the sensible Jon, now we have a portrait into the life of a crazed lunatic who lives at home by himself and says things so off the wall he must be delusional.

The lunacy of Jon has taken this mediocre comic and turned it into an amazing glimpse into the life of madness.

I mean just look at what transpired in this comic, Jon all alone in his depression let’s us the audience know he’s going to do something drastic and then he disappears. Why did we not see the signs? How could we let him get this way?

Garfield Minus Garfield is a wonderful look into the psyche of Jon Arbuckle and many many more comics of this nature can be found at the website.

But wait, there’s more. If this has just wet your appetite of Garfield then I have one more stop for you to check out.

Permanent Monday

Permanent Monday is a site dedicated to the finer things within the Garfield comic. Imagine if you will you have just read a Garfield comic and you become curious about the subtle nuances between Garfield and Jon, was there a Bon Mot cleverly hidden in there that you did not find? Well Permanent Monday is here to tell you if there was. Chris Stangl explains to you everything you didn’t get in the comic and more. It hasn’t updated in quite a long time but if you haven’t read it before have a go through the archives, you’ll find quite a treasure trove of hilarity from your pals at Garfield.

So there you have it, this week’s edition of “The Sunday Funnies” stay tuned next week for my pick of the greatest webcomic on the web that is still updating regularly. And keep coming back every sunday to find out what you’ve been missing in webcomics around the world.

The Geek Show #1

Every week for about 2 1/2 years the fellows from the Geek Show Podcast have been bringing you an excellent, hilarious, geeky hour of geekiness every week.  For almost two of those years, I have been producing a video version of their show for Xfinity’s Utah On Demand system.  Their licensing agreement was such that the content was exclusive to them, but we’ve since worked it so that it is only a window of exclusivity and now we’ll be getting the show every week on the internet.

Be sure to check out their website and subscribe to their podcast. The show’s regular panelists includes Kerry Jackson, host of X96’s Radio From Hell, Leigh George Kade from Grimmleigh’s Fiends, Shannon Barnson, my co-host at the Pub Quiz, Jeff Vice and Jimmy Martin from the Big Movie Mouth-Off, and Scott Pierce, television critic for The Salt Lake Tribune.

The Geek Show will be putting the video up on their website, and we’ll be putting it up here as well…  You know…  Since I produce it, damn it.

This first episode to appear online is also the first episode from 2011.

They discuss a lot of topics in these two half hour segments and it’s a blast to watch.  So, without further ado:

And part two:

Andy Samberg and Pee-Wee Herman Get Trashed

I know it sounds crazy, but Andy Samberg and Pee-Wee Herman got together for the Digital Short on this week’s Saturday Night Live.

It was pretty damn funny, so I decided to share it with our faithful readers here.

And their “pranks” are hilarious in their stupidity.  It’s no wonder they need an intervention.

Obama as Skywalker…

Jon Stewart came off vacation yesterday and hit things home with a great analogy for what happened with Barack Obama and his agenda during the lame duck session of Congress.

It’s a pretty apt analogy when you bring Star Wars into it. And not to get too political, it was great to see who they put in for the Wampa and I hope Obama does come back much like Luke did in Return of the Jedi… And maybe it would be good to see him cut off John Boehner’s hand…

It’s important to remember how much of a Star Wars nerd Jon Stewart is. You can read about his interview with George Lucas here. (-_62MVI”>And you can watch Stewart’s run-in with Big Shiny Robot! here…)

Tag Team Thursdays

It’s time again for Tag Team Thursday, where Clobber-Tron and Shaz-Bot take one of this week’s comics and share their opinions! This week they have an unfortunate encounter with:

Halcyon #1 from Image Comics

The PREVIEWS solicitation read

The story of what happens when the superheroes win. No crime, no war.

We disagree with the word STORY in that sentence.

C-T: I cant read Urdu, Arabic, Farsi, or any of the other languages spoken in the middle east so whenever I see these letters in a comic book it’s a bit of a turn off.

S-B: You do realize that the foreign text is just a font made to look like Arabic? It’s actually in English, it’s a clever way to do a foreign language without putting it in brackets and adding a footnote saying what language is being spoken, but also it’s really hard to read in spots, and kind of comes off as being a bit too clever.

C-T: Yeah I totally got that, I was wondering if it would blow past you or anybody else reading the book, I’ve been reading Zatana speak long enough to know what those crazy letterers are up too!

S-B: . In my mind, first issues are supposed to hook me in a way that makes me want to read more, Image usually is good about that with books like Chew, Guarding the Globe and the like, but in this book, it’s just introducing characters and a vague semblance of setting.

C-T: After the ultra violent JARHEAD scene we skip to an alternate reality where the combination of strange characters and background remind me of the 80’s G.I. Joe cartoons.

S-B: I kind of got a bit of a G.I. Joe vibe too, but only from Jarhead and the design of the main villain

C-T: I enjoy the art by Ryan Bodenheim and I’m really impressed. I don’t want to over compliment the guy but his pencils remind me of a cross between Frank Quitely and Chris Burnham!

S-B: I did like the art. I got a big Frank Quietly vibe from it, but with it’s own flair.

C-T: Ok on to the ‘story’, when Three weeks ago, today and ‘that moment’ are the time frame given new readers to align a story in their head with characters they’ve never seen before explosions and snippets of conversation between superheroes? And cops? And villains? I cant tell what’s what and I want to punch this book. There is no way issue #2 can reverse the damage done by this terrible narrative. If this becomes a classic story reprinted in a deluxe format I’ll eat my hat.

S-B Wow. You really didn’t like this book. I can’t really argue with your points though. My main problem is they introduce all these characters, but they don’t give us anything to connect with them on any level. If I don’t care about the situations, there is nothing there to keep me reading. It’s Tom Brevoort’s #2 rule of writing, You can have the cleverest setup ever (this is more convoluted then clever), but if you can’t make the reader care about the characters, you’re doing it wrong.

C-T I hated this book so much I promised to eat my well loved haberdashery if it becomes a raging success! Who the hell wrote this book Grant Morrison’s dog? Is this Marc Guggenheim fellow new to the game?

S-B: Guggenheim was one of the Spidey Brain Trust writers in addition to writing a lot for TV. I personally don’t think he’s too suited for comics work, but your mileage may vary. Although we both agree avoid this book like the plague.

Aside form the wonderful Ryan Bodenheim art that wraps up the first all negative Tag Team Thursday. See you next week.
