Is BOOM! Teasing a Sleepy Hollow Series?

There isn’t much to this one but by my estimation FOX may be working with BOOM! Studios on a comic book based on the widely popular Sleepy Hollow series. The television show is entering its second season with increasing support from their fan base. That support is growing with the fan base as people find out the series is a fresh take on Washington Irving’s short story.

‘Jim Henson’s The Dark Crystal: The Novelization’ This June

Fans of Jim Henson’s novels have much to rejoice this year as Archaia reprints them all. “Jim Henson’s The Dark Crystal: The Novelization” is the second of three planned hard-covers to come via Archaia through a collaboration with BOOM! Studios and The Jim Henson Company. The first book, “Jim Henson’s Labyrinth: The Novelization” was released in April to much fan-faire. Like that book, “The Dark Crystal” will come with never before seen illustrations and concept art by artist Brian Froud.

The novelization of “The Dark Crystal” was collaboration between A.C.H. Smith and Jim Henson of the highest level so to see The Jim Henson company work with Archaia should excite Henson fans for the coming release. Archaia is known in the publishing industry for producing collections with exceptional quality and workmanship. The official press release from BOOM! Studios & Archaia can be found below. If you’ve got an opinion to share on this announcement, let us know in the comments past the announcement or on Twitter @BigShinyRobot.

ARCHAIA AND THE JIM HENSON COMPANY SET TO DEBUT ‘JIM HENSON’S THE DARK CRYSTAL: THE NOVELIZATION’

May 12, 2014 – Los Angeles, CA – Award-winning publisher Archaia, an imprint of BOOM! Studios, is excited to announce the June debut of JIM HENSON’S THE DARK CRYSTAL: THE NOVELIZATION, the second in a planned series of three hardcovers that reprint the prose novel adaptations of fan-favorite Henson properties. The book follows the recent April release of JIM HENSON’S LABYRINTH: THE NOVELIZATION and will be followed by the August release of JIM HENSON’S STORYTELLER: THE NOVELIZATION.

JIM HENSON’S THE DARK CRYSTAL: THE NOVELIZATION, written by author and playwright A.C.H. Smith and overseen by Jim Henson, reprints the long-out-of-print prose novel of the classic 1982 fantasy film for the first time in hardcover and features illustrations and concept designs by legendary illustrator and concept artist Brian Froud (The Goblins of Labyrinth, Faeries) that have never before been published. The book also contains an exclusive peek into Jim Henson’s creative process with a transcription of over 20 never-before-seen pages of his detailed notes on an early draft of the adaptation.

“There’s an entire generation of Jim Henson fans who never had the opportunity to enrich their enjoyment of classics like Labyrinth and The Dark Crystal with the prose novel adaptations,” said BOOM! Studios Editor-in-Chief Matt Gagnon. “We’re honored to be working with The Jim Henson Company and The Jim Henson Archives to give these reprints the Archaia treatment and present them in beautiful new editions.”

Archaia began publishing comic books and original graphic novels based on The Jim Henson Company’s most popular titles in 2010 with the FRAGGLE ROCK comic book series and has consistently published new projects since that time. Archaia’s relationship with The Jim Henson Company resulted in the Eisner Award-winning JIM HENSON’S TALE OF SAND, based on the lost screenplay by Jim Henson and Jerry Juhl and illustrated by Ramón Pérez, along with critically acclaimed interpretations of JIM HENSON’S THE STORYTELLER, THE DARK CRYSTAL, and FRAGGLE ROCK.

JIM HENSON’S THE DARK CRYSTAL: THE NOVELIZATION goes on sale in comic shops and specialty stores on June 4th under Diamond Order Code APR140989, and wherever books are sold on June 10th (ISBN 978-1-60886-418-8). The 6” x 8”, 224-page hardcover prose novelization will retail for $19.99.

Eric Powell and Brian Churilla Are In Big Trouble

Here’s a bit of good news for nerds who foster a deep nostalgia for 1980’s cinema: Boom! Studios has partnered with Eric Powell (“The Goon”) and Brian Churilla (“The Secret Files of D.B. Cooper”) to produce a comic book sequel to the 1986 cult-film “Big Trouble in Little China.” In addition to creating the covers of each issue, Powell will be penning the story—with a little help from John Carpenter—and Churilla will be illustrating.

From a creative standpoint, it’s tough to picture a team of people that are better suited for this project. Powell’s zombie-noir comic “The Goon” has the same vibe of weird-ass urban fantasy that was so prominent in Carpenter’s film, and Churilla is no stranger to bringing bizarre creatures to droolingly colorful life.

According to an interview with USA Today, Powell explained that the story picks up right where the film ended, which, if you remember, finds Jack Burton trucking into the rainy night with that horrifying ape-monster stowing away on the Pork Chop Express. Powell went on to say that Burton actually befriends the creature, and the two become the Han Solo and Chewbacca of Chinatown’s demonic underworld. Thus far, Powell has mentioned that familiar characters like Wang Chi and Egg Shen will also return.

The first issue is set for release on June 4, and you can bet your six-demon bag that I’ll be visiting my local comic book shop for this piece of fried gold.

Five and Three

As always, “Five & Three” brings you my favorite things in comics this week. Every week I pick my five favorite covers and three favorite panels to create “Five & Three”. I like to talk about why I picked the covers and panels and welcome hecklers and trend setters alike. If you disagree with a pick, let me know in the comments or on Twitter @MarkAvo. If you think I should’ve picked something else or have a pick in mind for next week, give me a shout out and let me know.

This week I’m starting things off with a crazy indie cover I spotted on ComiXology, “Itty Bitty Bunnies in Rainbow Pixie Candy Land”.  Art and writing on this wonderfully humorous comic is all from Dean Rankine. The book is only a buck and comes in at just under 100 pages! That’s a crazy deal for the amount of content but the book might not be to everyones tastes.

Next up is “Elektra” #1 from Marvel. The cover art on this one is a spectacular display of the beauty ninja limbs can create courtesy of Michael Del Mundo. I think the page count is a little high for a four dollar book but as long as Marvel keeps the quality up then the readers will continue to buy them.

Elektra

The cover on this book is creepy and gripping and Max Bemis deserves credit for setting the hair on my neck on end with “Evil Empire” #2. BOOM! Studios has been producing some of my favorite books lately. I got to hand it to them, they’re on top of their game.

Evil Empire

Here’s an Image title in “Zero” #7. The book by Ales Kot has been an intriguing sci-fi spy thriller. The first cover to stick in my head this week was this issue by Matt Taylor.

Zero

The last cover for this week is an example of DC Comics getting covers right. I’ve complained in the past that DC’s covers aren’t as eye catching as the other publishers and this week they’re hitting above .500. That being said, this cover in particular was terrific. Even though it’s another typical “team splash” cover it’s done in a way that tells a bit of a story. It’s also a wonderful blend between dark and light and uses every amount of negative space available. Kenneth Rocafort is my favorite cover artist this week and with a cover like this I’m a little disappointed I dropped “Teen Titans” ten issues back. I guess I’ll have to borrow them from someone and get caught up before the relaunch this summer.

Teen Titans

My favorite panels this week start with “Original Sin” #0. The book’s writing is by Mark Waid and it answers the question, “What is the Watcher watching for?” I like the young Nova and in these panels you see why. He’s excited to be a part of the super-heroes of Earth and is making memories. He wants to be a part of everything and shares his experiences with everyone he can. After all, who can a teenage super-hero talk to? The Watcher himself will always listen.

Original Sin #0

“Letter 44” by Charles Soule and Alberto Jimenez Alburquerque is superb storytelling. Oni Press has a hit on their hands that, in my opinion, not enough people are reading. The story of a letter from an outgoing president to an incoming one is simple enough. It’s the secret that 43 tells 44 though that makes this book what it is. The previous president started war and spent the country into a hole. He did so because of an alien space craft just outside the asteroid belt! What I love the most about this book has been the political intrigue and the real applications of space. The well-drawn crew in the panels below is studying the craft and they’re all in zero-G. The 2D image by Alburquerque is full of motion and the figures look like they’re about to float right out of the panel.

Letter 44

My last pick for the week is a Groot panel from one of the two backup stories in the double-sized “Guardians of The Galaxy” 14. I can’t want to see Groot come to life this summer so maybe that’s why picked this panel? It’s probably because of how it makes me feel like a kid again, or maybe it’s because it’s just fun? Either way, it’s the last pick this week and it’s a great one.

The Guardians Of The Galaxy

That’s all for now, if you’re aching for more comic book moments you can check out last week’s article here. If that doesn’t satiate you go checkout the deviantART Podcast where my friend’s and I geek out about art. If you’re all caught up on those fronts I’m afraid you’ll have to wait until next week. I’ll be here waiting!

Claudio Sanchez & Chondra Echert

The most adorable hard rock, comic book creating duo in the biz is hands down Claudio Sanchez and Chondra Echert. Claudio is the front-man for the band Coheed and Cambria and Chondra is his wife, muse and the love of his life. It’s not hard to hear that last part when talking to them or when hearing from them over social media. Chondra who goes by Chonnye is incredibly active on Twitter and has a horde of fans who follow her simply because of how amazingly open and real she is with everyone. She has worked with her husband Claudio on the past two comic projects to come from the mind of a the composer and the results were great.

It’s not stretching reality to say that most writers that step into the comic medium from expertise in another creative field have a hard time executing in Comics. With the team of Claudio and Chonnye though, the results are the rare result of comic book nirvana. Claudio’s background comes with some comic writing of his own with The Amory Wars – a story that tells the tales behind the music of Coheed and Cambria. Claudio is also a passionate comic book fan who understands characters and their motivations. He has such a unique understanding of The Batman and The Joker that his song with Coheed and Cambria, “Deranged”, on the “Batman: Arkham City” soundtrack was lauded for its insight to the characters. The song itself is a deeply disturbed interpretation of the almost lovesick relationship The Batman and The Joker seem to have with one another.

Claudio can be heard thumbing through his stack of comics as he talks about absolutely everything he’s currently reading.

Chondra’s background is being an outsider looking in. She’s not new to comics but she didn’t grow up with them in her lunch sack like many other writers did. Instead, she’s read up and fallen in love with the medium for her own reasons. She brings a refreshing look to the writing team that made their last outing, “The Key of Z” a critical darling. She’s also the one half of an expecting couple who is doing all of the “heavy lifting”. #BabySanchez as he’s known online is due next month.

I was lucky enough to sit down with them and discuss their latest book “Translucid”. It was a long conversation between a fan playing as a reporter and an impassioned team of writers who had a hard time not talking about how much they love comics, art, and their book “Translucid”. At one point during the interview, Claudio can be heard thumbing through his stack of comics as he talks about absolutely everything he’s currently reading. The list of comics being consumed between the two of them could literally fill a comic shop, where Chonnye mentions they visit on a regular basis. The transcript below is edited down. If you’d like to hear the entire interview you can listen to it in your browser or download it from this link here.

Mark Avo: I’ve read the first issue of “Translucid”. As a first issue I think it did its job well because I was very upset when I ran out of pages. That’s what a comic is supposed to do; it’s supposed to make you want to keep going. That being said, for the uninitiated what is “Translucid”?

Claudio Sanchez: Chondra?

Chondra Echert:  Go ahead Claud, you take this one.

CS: “Translucid” is basic your hero villain tale. Like most hero villain tales such as The Batman, you have a hero who sort of inspires his rogues gallery. This is sort of that story but to the point where the rogues gallery their roles are sort of reversed. Certainly the hero comes first but in developing these adversaries, he starts to use them as his guides to making him become the hero he is supposed to be. So basically <Translucid> is a story where the villain The Horse doesn’t necessarily want to make the hero a better hero anymore. He used to think that was his responsibility but now he wants to sever the ties between the two of them.

Did I do a good job of that Chondra?

CE:  Yeah, it’s a basic hero and villain tale with a twist that, we don’t really see so much of the relationship as it is happening. We sort of pop in at the end of it when everything has hit a wall. They’re tired of each other and have grown too co-dependent to keep moving forward so our villain wants to end their relationship.

Translucid Panels

MA: Why superheroes? Is it a love letter to characters like Batman and The Joker? Given the disturbing nature of the Coheed and Cambria song for the “Batman: Arkham City” soundtrack “Deranged”, I assume that Claudio feels deeply about that relatioship.

CS: I think it was time to do a superhero story. With the other three titles we have being in comics, “Kill Audio”, “Key of Z, and “The Amory Wars”, they’re all part of other genres really with Science Fiction, Horror, Comedy. I think <for us> it was about time to tell a superhero story. Also, when you bring up the “Deranged” song I think that was part of the inspiration as to why we chose to do a <story> in this way. Yes, <there is> definitely my love for those two characters and the chemistry between them. So we wanted to make this somewhat of a love letter but The Horse is certainly more, um, methodical?

CE:  Honey, sweetie, maybe conniving? I think The Horse’s moves are really to provoke The Navigator in a sense that he’s not trying to create chaos just to create it or to piss The Navigator off. He wants to create a meaningful environment for The Navigator to exist in. So when you see him operating as a villain it’s never in a nasty way or an evil way, it’s always in a thought provoking way. He wants The Navigator to be a better hero because he’s been so inspired by him. So, the situations that he creates for The Navigator to fix are not coming from a sinister place per say. I think that’s something for me, as someone who never really grew up reading superhero comics or reading comics in general as a kid. What’s so interesting to me about the relationship between heroes and villains aren’t necessarily the action parts. These sort of villainous situations aren’t as exciting to me as the reasons that they’re there. So for us that’s a really big part of this book. Exploring the emotions behind the settings that they choose and the reasons why they’re picking certain victims.

MA: Chonnye, is that why you agreed to be the Co-Writer on this particular story, and that’s under my assumption that this was sort of Claudio’s brainchild and you kinda ran with it? Correct me if I’m wrong.

CE:  We were just talking about this yesterday. Actually the idea sprung up a couple of years ago. The boys were doing a photo-shoot in this little graveyard where they rehearse and Claudio had seen this gravestone that was this guy by the name of Cornelius Slingerland. So originally the story was called Slingerland and the hero was also called Slingerland. Claudio couldn’t get the name out of his head and he couldn’t stop tossing it around. I think it was also around the time that they did the soundtrack song for The Batman and Joker Deranged <On the Arkham City Soundtrack>. It was basically taking all of the inspired elements and trying to create a story out of them. There were definitely a lot of ideas and over-arching schemes for Translucid but we honed them in over time to create a story with them. Definitely with the help from our Editors over at BOOM! too.

CS: For me, I’ve always wanted and I have always thought of writing a Batman story. And, I’ve always thought about superhero stories and their origin stories. What if there was a way to take their origin and use it as the ending – to use it as the demise of the hero? That was the loop that was in my mind. Chondra and I… I think anything outside of The Amory Wars I just have fun working with my wife on titles. It was just a natural thing for her and I to co-write this as we have with the other titles. I think it’s just fun for us to collaborate together. I think that answer was all over the place? <laughs>

MA: No, it hit on a lot of great points. Now, I’d have to be crazy not to ask you both about Daniel Bayliss. He is the artist for “Translucid” and his past work is kinda hard to find but I believe it’s well worth the search. How did you find him and what made the both of you choose him as the artist for Translucid.

CE:  Do you want to take this one Claud or?

CS: No, go for it, go for it.

CE:  Daniel came to us from our Editors at BOOM! who approached us with four or five options of really talented artists. At the time we were thinking, because the story bounces around so much, we might need more than one artist to sort of take on duties or maybe handle flashbacks with different art. We had been tossing around a lot of ideas. They came <to us> with Daniel and his test. I think the test was the double-page spread of The Horse you see in the first few pages and it was so beautiful that we just thought that this was our guy. We saw something that we hadn’t seen before with an artist we’d used in the past. It was something different and a little more illustrative in some ways, but just really cool and tactile. So, like you said we hadn’t seen a lot of his past work it seemed like he understood the story we wanted to tell and he understood the characters and he really understood the dynamic between the hero and the villain. So, yeah, we love working with him. He is really creative. He takes the script and he runs with it. Adam Metcalf who is on colors fills in all of the blanks and his colors really work with the art. We’re really proud of the way this book looks.

CS: Didn’t we? We also saw his short called, “The Deal”, which was basically a Batman Joker story. Wasn’t that one of the deciding factors as well?

CE:  Yeah, yeah absolutely. Have you seen it?

MA: Yes it’s, it’s really twisted. I liked it a lot.

CE:  <laughs> It’s really twisted. It’s exactly what it is. You know that for us it was the relationship he tells in that short. The darkness of it and the sort of romantic undertones that are almost present between The Joker and Batman, those were all things we felt that The Navigator and The Horse have. It’s an intense relationship that’s kind of inexplicable. We thought that the darkness he put into that short was something we wanted to see in “Translucid” for sure.

MA: It sounds to me that it was a pure collaborative process between the three of you and even the colorist Metcalf.

CE:  Absolutely. It bums me out that Daniel doesn’t have a Twitter because I would just be tweeting at him all day. Here’s another page and it’s the most beautiful thing you’ve ever seen! <laughs>

Translucid: The Navigators Rogues Gallery

MA: My closing question is:  Besides becoming parents, do you have any other plans for future creative collaborative endeavors?

CS: Yeah, we are planning on following up “Key of Z” at some point. There are a couple of titles in the wings, as time allows we will probably get too that we have not put out there into the world. I wrote a children’s story that Chondra helped edit which we are hoping to have out maybe next year.

CE: We plan to take three months maternity leave and when the baby comes <we’ll> give ourselves a little time to exist with him without being on a dead line. I am sure that we will be very inspired and have a whole hand full of stories in that time that we will need to work on immediately.

CS: “Amory Wars” is around the corner. We have been working on that for a few years now.  I’d like to revisit Good Apollo One in more of a clear fashion. It’s just taking up so much time, the outline, because there are so many loose ends we want to tie up with these last few stories. It’s just taking a lot of our focus. We just moved into some mock scripting at the moment. So we’ll see

‘Translucid’ is a Transcendent Duality Tale

There’s a reason nearly every review you’ll read about the new book from BOOM! Studios and EvilInk Comics is saying essentially “Translucid” is how a comic book story should begin. That reason is the creative team of Claudio Sanchez, Chondra Echert and artist Daniel Bayliss have produced one of the most exciting creator-owned issue ones of 2014. The pacing is perfect with small glances at previous events to expand on the hero of the story, The Navigator. The flashbacks in this issue are done right because they’re quick, they explain exactly what you’ll need to know as you move forward through the narrative and they don’t bog down the over-all story. That story mind you, is one in which The Navigators long running nemesis has been captured by fellow villains for nefarious “boom goes the dynamite” kind of reasons. Like The Batman rescuing The Joker or Spider-man swinging in to save Doc Ock, The Navigator just can’t help himself when it comes to rescuing The Horse.

“Translucid” is ordered disorder. It is a duality tale of a different nature.

Of course, The Navigator would have everyone think that the reason he’s saving the day is to protect the cities landmark building. But, with any love-sick relationship between obsessive hero and compulsive villain, we all know otherwise. The Navigator uses all manner of self-constructed holo-graphic tools and high tech gear while The Horse is a bit of every great villain from a rogues gallery. He’s not just compulsive for the sake of chaos and the servitude of creating a greater hero, no The Horse’s plan is deep and by the end of the issue The Navigator will have fallen face first into it.

Translucid
Images courtesy of BOOM! Studios

The writing is refreshing and that’s certainly because of the report the two writers have with one another. Chondra and Claudio are perfect compliments to each other’s strengths and weaknesses. What’s more is that they’ve found in Daniel Bayliss an artist with a grasp on the darker side of being a super hero. Previous comic work from Bayliss isn’t exactly easy to find but you’ll be glad once you’ve looked. To save you time, after this article go and read his fan comic short written by Gerardo Preciado. The art is a spectacle but the emotions on the faces of well known characters are haunting. It’s that haunting feeling that convinced Claudio and Chondra that Bayliss was the artist to work on their tale where the villain finally ends the relationship regardless of how the hero feels.

The dark mood is often lighter with the comical costumes which feel both over the top and just right all at the same time. It’s a bit of brevity that lets you know as you read this that the story isn’t real but the narrative often times is. That only creates more sinking feelings as you turn page after page toward an inevitable ending. You’ll be left wanting to turn just one more page but you’ll have to wait until next month. Expect to read a panel or a cover in this week’s Five and Three because the other books this week are going to have to work hard to top how excited I was for next month at the end of this comic. “Translucid” is ordered disorder. It is a duality tale of a different nature. It is what happens when a villain I bored with the game and the hero is still unwittingly altruistic. It’s also great comic booking with a splash of Rock and Roll that demands to be read, so go read it.

First Look at ‘The Woods’

Boom! Studios has announced the upcoming independent book from storytellers James Tynion IV and Michael Dialynas. “The Woods” is a horror suspense tale in which an entire high school campus suddenly vanishes from our world and ends up appearing in an alien forest. The environment isn’t friendly to the people from the school and they’ll do anything they can to get back to the world they’re from. James Tynion IV is a recent hit over at DC Comics for his work with “Batman” writer Scott Snyder but he has certainly struck out on his own with hits such as “The Talon” and “Red Hood and The Outlaws”.  He has proven to be a fan favorite for his unique style of suspense.

BOOM! Studios will be the first to publish an original comic book series from Tynion IV and I for one could not be more excited. In addition to this being an original book from Tynion, the comic will also feature art by Michael Dialynas. This artist is one to watch as his career grows up. Dialynas is from Greece and has worked on books from Dark Horse and Marvel Comics. His artist storytelling will work perfectly for a horror book. I’m certain that “The Woods” will give horror books over at Dark Horse a run for their money. BOOM! Studios has given us some preview art of the covers which you can check out below. In the meantime, let your comic shop know to order “The Woods” because it’ll be on stands May 7th:
