Archie Comics to Publish Governator Comic!

Something that has been poking around in the media the last week or so is that Stan Lee & Arnold Schwarzenegger are teaming up to bring you The Governator, the adventures of Arnold’s post-political career as a superhero. What you may not have known though, is that the Governator is going for a four-pronged media blitz, with a 3D movie, merchandising, cartoon and comic in the works. It was just announced today that Archie Comics will be publishing the Governator comic series.

The premise behind the series is this: Arnold decides to take on villainy that no one else can. He uses his vast resources to create a secret hideout beneath his home, hire a team of techy teens to act as support. He then uses his vast array of technology, including a state of the art motorcycle, various “super suits” and cutting edge weaponry to take the good fight to the streets. Now, if you’re like me, at first glance you might be thinking to yourself how ridiculous the concept is. Then the trailer came out and my opinion changed from “ridiculous” to “ridiculously awesome”! Take a look for yourself.

So yeah, aside from the music used, I’m kind of excited to see this. I’m not all in yet, but I am extremely curious to see what comes out of it. Let us know what you think, and watch for The Governator’s media blitz in 2012!

UPDATE: Here’s the full teaser image from the folks at Archie Comics!

FIRST LOOK: Jughead Double Digest #169

I love Jughead, but I have to call foul on this preview. Jughead debates that if he eats  now he won’t have room for food at Veronica’s party? Come on, he’s Jughead! Of course he’ll have room, he has the metabolism of a cheetah! Anyway, the whole concept of 3D commercials could be super-effective. I already get hungry seeing a good burger in 2D! Anyway, I’m rambling, you can see Jughead up to his usual (and sometimes unusual) antics in Jughead Double Digest #169. Pick it up next week!

JUGHEAD DOUBLE DIGEST #169
“The Ultimate Temptation” and “Pay-Back Fire”
In “The Ultimate Temptation,” Jughead must decide to save his appetite for an all you can eat spread at Veronica’s party or go to work for an agency offering him a job as a food sampler! One choice will make him a hero! Then, in “Pay-Back Fire”, Reggie tries to get the best of Jughead with his over the top practical jokes, but in the end who is it that gets the last laugh?

FIRST LOOK: B&V Friends Double Digest #213

That title is definitely a mouthful.  Make no mistake though, This is Betty & Veronica at their friendly rivalry best! It looks like in addition to various backups and Josie and The Pussycats stories, we get a Betty & Veronica story set in the wild west. It’s always fun to see the Archie characters in a new setting. Also, Betty enlists Archie to help sell her old dresses. You gotta feel for the guy, dragging himself out of bed at 5:30am just to help his friend show uite a bit of devotion. At any rate, these stories and more await you in B&V Friends Double Digest #213, ask for it by name!

B & V FRIENDS DOUBLE DIGEST #213
“East Meets West” and “Whale of a Sale”. In “East Meets West”, Betty and Veronica battle in the Wild West to keep the railroad tracks free and clear of the dastardly Rogue Reggie and his gang of train robbers. Before he strikes again, Sheriff Moose must devise a plan to stop the gang for good! Then, in “Whale of a Sale”, Betty didn’t do financially well at her garage sale, but she certainly makes up for it in valuable time spent with Archie!

FIRST LOOK: Betty #191

Here’s a sneak peek at next Wednesday’s issue of Betty! Going from the preview pages, the conclusions I draw about Betty are that she is A) Much more capable than Archie, B)Has an incredibly active imagination, and C)Is not above using boys for grunt work using food as a bribe. She is definitely the girl next door, and we wouldn’t have it any other way!

BETTY #191
“A Friend to the End,” “The Big Mess” and “The Birthday Bash”.
In “A Friend to the End”, Betty’s imaginary childhood friend returns! How can Betty continue with teen life when Miss Fablo looks to pick up where they left off? Then, in “The Big Mess,” Nancy uses her organizing skills to help Betty clean her room, but may have taken on more she can handle! FIRST LOOK: Archie & Friends Double Digest #5

Another week, another Archie digest. That is by no means a bad thing! I especially like what they’ve been doing lately. They have their cover story which is serialized over 3 or 4 issues, if you like that sort of thing, but then the rest of the book is chock full of “done-in-one” or single page gag strips. There is truly something for everyone. Take Archie & Friends Double Digest #5, it continues the “Adventures in the Cyber Realm” story that has been going on since #1. In this tale, Archie & the Gang are trapped in a video game reality created by Dilton. While that sounds a little tired, the execution is insane in the most awesome way possible. Where else are you going to have an ersatz Pokémon riding the hoverboard from Back to the Future II while battling enemies from the classic arcade game Burger Time?

Also in this issue is a story about the importance of recycling plastics. The Archie people have in the past had PSAs about PET plastic containers, so it’s no surprise that they’re returning to this subject, especially this close to Earth Day.  I really don’t mind PSA comics as long as they flow naturally and aren’t just statistics thrown into a narrative. I have confidence in the talent at Archie, though. As someone much wiser than I said: “If you’re not careful, you may learn something before it’s done.”

ARCHIE & FRIENDS DOUBLE DIGEST #4
“Adventures in the Wonder Realm” Part 4.
“Adventures in the Wonder Realm” continue as Archie, Jughead and Betty fight for their lives against angry food and rock creatures standing between them and freedom! Will Veronica and their new friend Cheroby help the team in completing all the different levels? Or will they be lost in the Wonder Realm forever?

FIRST LOOK: Archie Double Digest #217

Ah, the PSA comic, they aren’t as plentiful as they used to be, but they were a big part of my childhood. When I received the first look for Archie Double Digest #217, the first thing I noticed was the blurb about a story from MADD and the NFL. Based on the preview pages, it looks like someone is going to get into a bit of a scrape involving drunk driving, but I bet with the help of Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten, everything will turn ok. At least, I hope so. If you’re not into the whole PSA thing, I’ve two things to say to you. First, this won’t feel as forced as some PSA comics have been. Second, it’s a double digest! There are 160 pages of comic in this puppy, if you don’t like PSAs there is plenty for you to enjoy. Don’t believe me? Take a look at the preview pages, I definitely want to know what happens to Archie’s dad after he and Arch climb Veronica’s fence together!

ARCHIE DOUBLE DIGEST #217
“It’s a Steal,” “Career Sphere” and “Sore Loser”
In “It’s a Steal” robbers have the residents of Riverdale terrified, but Archie and Jughead create more fear as they help! Next, in “Career Sphere”, Archie tries to decide his future vocation, but they all end in disaster! Finally, “Sore Loser” finds Archie’s dad following Archie in an attempt to lose weight and write a diet book. Will he lose his mind before he loses any weight?

Tickets Still Available for Riverdale Comic Con!

Unlike certain other comic cons, you won’t have to scramble in an online queue to attend RDCC ’11! Archie Comics was kind enough to pass along the solicit for June’s Archie & Friends #156. As you can see, the Riverdale gang is doing the cosplay thing. Some of the costumes are inspired, such as Jughead as Spock and Chuck as Mace Windu (no comment on Betty as a Na’vi). On the other hand, Reggie is wearing the wrong Hogwarts’ house colors! He’s always struck me as more of a Slytherin. As it is, I am very much looking forward to reading this one. Not only do we have the inherent coolness of the Riverdale folk going geek, it’s also a mash-up of all of the Archie/Riverdale properties at once. The thing that’ll get me to buy it though, is the fact that Archie PR man extraordinaire, Alex Segura is helming the writing chores on this one. He’s an awesome guy, and I can’t wait to read it!

RIVERDALE COMIC CON INTERNATIONAL

In a tale by Alex Segura, Archie and the kids from Riverdale High run into Sabrina and Josie & the Pussycats at the Riverdale Comic-Con. It’s bigger than the San Diego Comic-Con and hitting right in the middle of the busy comic convention season.

What will the kids find at the biggest sci-fi, comic and entertainment event to hit Riverdale? Will Veronica win the costume contest? Find out as superstar Archie artist Bill Galvan draws this wild, wacky tale! Coincidentally, Bill himself was discovered by Archie Comics at a comic book convention. Will Riverdale’s own comic artist Chuck Clayton be as lucky?

FIRST LOOK: B & V Double Digest #189

Archie Comics once again has sent us a preview of an upcoming book. This time it’s Betty & Veronica Double Digest #189. I personally really like the digests. Where else can you get 160 pages worth of comics for $4 nowadays? That being said, the preview here is only the tip of the iceberg. You not only get the two Betty-ccentric stories previewed here, but also a nice dose of Sabrina, the Teenage Witch. And certainly Veronica won’t be letting Betty hog the spotlight! You can pick the book up in your shop this coming Wednesday, but if you’re a traditionalist and want to buy it in the supermarket checkout, you’ll have to wait until March 29th. Until then, enjoy!

BETTY & VERONICA DOUBLE DIGEST #189
“Sign of the Times” and “Concrete”
In “Sign of the Times” Betty’s friend Carol’s cartoons aren’t too popular in the school paper, but when Betty gets her to draw a sign for her bake sale, Carol may get a second chance at drawing a crowd! Then, in “Concrete,” Betty’s traumatized when she hears her and Archie’s initials in the cement are about to be covered up! What ultimate gesture of his affection can Archie make to re-cement his love for Betty?

FIRST LOOK: Jughead #206

After a 4 issue sojourn as a semi-private eye, everyone’s favorite bottomless pit, Jughead is back to his old antics in next week’s Jughead #206! Archie Comics was kind enough to send another of their generous first looks out way, and it looks to be a nice return to the multiple stories in one issue format.  This time out, it looks like we have Jug using his culinary expertise to help out lunch lady Ms. Beazly, being Riverdale’s #1 trend-setter by coming up with an ingenious way to avoid a certain powerful smell, and finally discovering the warm and comfort of a combination robe and blanket. It looks like a lot of fun, give it a look!

JUGHEAD #206
“Snug as a Jug in a Rug” and “Information Please”
“Snug as a Jug in a Rug” finds Jughead so comfortable in his new Snuggly Wuggly blanket he wants to sleep forever! Archie finally gets him out to help him on a job, but Jughead falls asleep in the mailroom and ends up being shipped out as bulk mail!
