ADVANCE REVIEW: Sonic the Hedgehog #226

I feel the need to preface this review with a few facts about me regarding the Sonic comics in general. In short, I am not a fan of them. I read a few of them back when I was twelve, and they were OK then, but trying to read them now is an exercise in WTF-ness for me. The storylines are very complex and I always felt that I needed a scorecard to know all the players. The irony is not lost on me that this is how a lot of people who try to get into Marvel or DC feel like. That being said, when I heard about the Sonic: Genesis storyline starting in Sonic #226, my interest was piqued. Not only did I think that I could enjoy it without a headache, I also have a young niece who is just learning to read and is crazy about Sonic. Does it pass our combined litmus test? Well, yes and no… Mostly yes.

Sonic knows things, and yet he doesn't. Strange things afoot...

As a jumping on point, the book is pitch-perfect. You can jump into the issue not knowing a lick about Sonic. Everything you need to know is laid out for you, and the various characters (re)introduced in the story appear naturally and the story flows well. Ian Flynn definitely knows his Sonic-lore. In fact, most everything in this issue has a basis in either the original Sonic the Hedgehog game for the Sega Genesis, or the much beloved Sonic SatAm animated series from the 90’s.

The art looks like it leaped off the screen an onto the comic page.

The story begins with Sonic trying to rescue some missing animals, just like the original 16-bit game. Along the way, he finds out their fate, and faces Snively, a lackey of Dr. Robotnik Eggman from the animated series. Eventually Sonic meets up with the Freedom Fighters for the first time, and they team up and in turn face Eggman for the first time. The story ends rather abruptly, with the Freedom Fighters continuing to take the fight to Eggman. Regardless of the negatives I’m about to point out, I’m eagerly awaiting part 2 of “Genesis” and that’s something I never suspected would happen.

Now for the negatives I just mentioned. Now, I am not well-steeped in Sonic lore, but I do have a rudimentary understanding. To me, it seems like this re-imagined world is cherry picking events from the previous one to be more streamlined, and that’s great. I mean, it’s kind of hard to work things into an ongoing story according to the edicts of a game company. Case in point, in the United States, The man who is now called Dr. Eggman was originally called Dr. Robotnik. When the Dreamcast and Sonic Adventure came out in 1999, Sega decided to use the Japanese name of Dr. Eggman in all territories with little to no explanation. The comics took a different tack involving clones, or alternate reality versions of the same mustachioed villain. It was all very confusing. It seems Flynn and company are taking this opportunity to just make things easier to understand. The negative aspects come in because while this is great for new readers, people who are well versed in the Sonic comics just had the rug unceremoniously pulled out from under them. It’s actually brings to mind fanboy fear of the upcoming DC Relaunch as to what from the past counts or not. While there are little seeds in the story that hint that all may not be as it seems (Sonic seems to know more than he should, Sonic and Sally are very familiar for people who’ve just met), it remains to be seen how everything is going to play out.

On the art side of things, the team of Patrick Spaziante, Tracy Yardley and Terry Austin(!) absolutely nail it! The character designs are a nice mix of the old and the new, everyone seems to be in proportion and it literally looks like the old Genesis graphics were translated into pencil and ink. From the environment to the characters, almost everything absolutely pops off the page. That’s in no small part to the colors by Matt Herms. It’s pleasing to the eye and never garish. The only oddity I could pick out is that, the characters seem to use their latter-day designs except for Dr. Eggman, who looks like he did in the Genesis days. I am not sure if this is for a future story reason or not, but it was noticeably jarring, at least for me.

Yes, Snively still snivels, and Sonic still has "attitude".

The real test of course was my niece’s reaction. To her, continuity, especially Sonic continuity doesn’t matter in the least bit. The various games, shows, and yes, comics she’s been exposed to have at least 6 different incarnations of Sonic & friends. All she wants is to be entertained. The comic fit the bill. Her favorite parts were those with Boomer Walrus. Whenever he’s show up on panel, she insisted I call him BOOMer, putting the emphasis on the boom. When I asked the kidlet if you had five of Sonic’s rings to give this comic based on how good it was, how many would you give it, she said 5 and a half. While I myself would give the issue a solid 4 rings, I can’t think of a better endorsement than that of a 5-year old enamored with all things Sonic.

The bottom line is if you were always intimidated by the Sonic comic-verse, this is the perfect time to jump in, and if you have younglings that you just want to share your love of comics with, you can’t go wrong with Sonic the Hedgehog #226. It’ll be out in comic shops this Wednesday, pick it up, won’t you?

Archie Comics Solicitations for September, 2011!

Once again, the fine people at Archie have given us a look at the products they have in store for September! The monthly books don’t contain any surprises, aside from Archie’s 625th issue not having any real details available. One wonders if anything special is in store for the book. Surely not a relaunch with a new #1 (I hope not, anyway)! Oh that left a bad taste in my mouth. To cleanse the pallet, the very nice looking Best of Archie Deluxe Hardcover looks especially nice. Unlike other hardcovers, this one seems to back up it’s slightly higher price tag with a truly beefy page count. Is there anything you’re looking forward to? ADVANCE REVIEW: Archie & Friends #156

There is an old saying that “every comic is someone’s first”. Usually when that’s bandied about, it’s referring to a comic reader. Today, I’m applying it to a writer. Archie & Friends #156 is Alex Segura’s first writing gig for Archie Comics. Alex is Archie’s “Director of Publicity and Marketing”. He’s also a pretty cool guy. Those qualities don’t necessarily make for a good storyteller, though. I was incredibly curious as to how this book would turn out ever since it was announced. I’m happy to say that Mr. Segura hits his first effort out of the park with an enjoyable tale that encompasses just about every member of the Riverdale gang!

As evidenced by the cover, this tale takes place at the Riverdale Comic Con. The core group of Archies come together, but are all there for different reasons. Archie wants a copy of the first comic he ever read, Betty & Veronica want to meet celebrities, and Jughead wants to sample the Con food. Reggie on the other hand, is up to his regular antics…

It’s not all fun and games, as there is the underlying mystery of “Who is Maximus Chrome?” He’s cosplaying with the rest of the group and seems to know them, but none of the Archies know exactly who he (or she) is. As everyone starts to speculate, the laundry list of suspects gets whittled down as we’re greeted with cameos by many other Riverdale denizens. The first person they meet is actually one of my least liked Archie characters, so I got a bit of a chuckle at his treatment in this issue.

Bingo tells the gang about the Con’s costume contest, and the entire group is off like a shot, trying to win. From there, the story moves on at a good clip with all of the various plot threads introduced as the group goes about their day converging at the end. Of course there is the big reveal of identity of Maximus Chrome. I’ll admit that at first, this reveal kind of fell flat for me and was my only real complaint about the issue. When I re-read it for this review, knowing who he was made it obvious that clues were dropped throughout and that actually made the story more enjoyable for me.

In summary, on the writing side, this was a pretty good book. Alex Segura obviously has a hold on everyone’s characterizations, and I’d enjoy reading more of his work. While the writing is great, the real star of this comic is the stellar artwork by Bill Galvan. I don’t know where Segura ends and Galvan begins for all of the comic-booky homages in this issue, but they brought a smile to my face more than once. Where else are you going to see Josie and the Pussycats eschew their usual look for Catwoman/Black Cat inspired looks? Not to mention a certain teenage witch being the chair of Riverdale’s equivalent of the 501st Legion? All of the inspired costuming combined with all of the geeky background details made this book a visual treat.

For anyone that likes good, clean fun and is not afraid to wallow in all of the things that make us geeks, this issue is great. It’s not perfect, but it is enjoyable. I don’t have a rating scale, but if I were to compare this to say, a typical Jughead meal of 5 hamburgers, I’d give this issue 3 and a half burgers.

FIRST LOOK: Archie Double Digest #219

I find this preview a little odd. I know you can’t show a full story when you want people to buy a book, but these preview pages end so abruptly, it’s difficult to see where they’re going. At any rate, this being a digest, there are a lot of stories, so even if the ones previewed don’t whet your appetite, there is still plenty of comic goodness to be had!

Next week’s issue of Betty continues the spy antics of Betty & Veronica. These preview pages are enjoyable, and funny. Not too much to say about today’s first look, except that Mr. Lodge is a decadent hypocrite. He has a totally green house in one story, and in the next he converts a 6-car garage into a den? Well, I guess he’s still being green if he doesn’t actually use a garage for cars, but still. I’m just jealous. Enjoy the previews!

Archie ComicsARCHIE DOUBLE DIGEST #221
“BALL IN THE HALL,” “COMP-EATING,” “E-CON-NOMICS,” & “PHONE A FRIEND”
In “Ball in the Hall,” Archie and Sayid search the school for the prankster behind the dangerous bouncing ball. Jughead races through a hotdog contest in “Comp-Eating” only to walk away when he’s almost at the finish line. Even though Archie wants to win, ol’ Jughead is in it for something else entirely. It’s hard to make it in the comics business, and as Chuck and Archie learn in “E-Con-Nomics,” you have to stay away from the merchandise if you hope to profit from your own. Be careful, Archie. With the arrival of his new smart phone/“best friend” in “Phone a Friend,” it might not be long before there’s no one left in Riverdale to call.

FIRST LOOK: Archie #621

Archie #621 has a few things going for it. First, it’s the first issue with a retro style red band on the top. I think that’ll make the book stand out nicely on the stands. Also, we are teased with the promise of a Lost Land full of dinosaurs and Archie becoming king of said land. While the preview pages below just tease it, I’m hoping Archie gets a bump on his head, declaring himself Ar-Chee and finds himself in a love triangle with two native girls, Mira and Manee. At any rate, enjoy the preview below !
