REVIEW: Red Circle’s ‘The Fox #5’

Now this isn’t a regular review from me (though I’ll admit that I read the issue and felt it was great.)

But this is from perhaps our Littlest Shiny Robot!, Son of Swank-mo-tron, Anakin Young. He’s 11 and read this book and insisted on reviewing it. For my part, I checked it out as well. Red Circle, who put the book out, is an imprint of Archie Comics, as they kick off their superhero line of books separate from the Riverdale gang. The Fox is really a guy named Paul Patton, Jr., a photojournalist and unpowered, costumed adventurer. The fifth issue of “The Fox” teams him up with the Archie comics hero The Shield as they battle the Druid.

It’s classic silver-age hijinks and dialogue and I enjoyed it. But I’m not here to review the book. Son of Swank-mo-tron is, so, without further ado, here’s his take on the book:

THE FOX #1 (monthly comic series, full color, Red Circle Comics, $2.99) (7.5 out of 10)

WHO’S RESPONSIBLE? J.M. DeMatteis (script); Dean Haspiel (art); Allen Passalaqua (colors) and John Workman (letters).

“The Fox” is a story that takes place 70 years ago, when World War II was happening. I have only read the 5th issue and it is a pretty okay comic book.

Anyways so this issue is about The Fox and he is accompanied by three other superheroes. They are pretty cool. One of their names is The Shield and he reminds me a lot of Captain America. I don’t know if i’m the only one who thinks that, but whatever. So, moving on well they did not really tell the the names of the other two or I might have forgot them, so I will just describe them. One is a Japanese samurai and has a green laser-like sword thing. The other one is a German dude. The German dude’s superpower is that he shoots blue lightning bolts out of his hand. That’s a pretty cool power to have when and if you are a superhero fighting a guy like Aquaman.

Now, ladies and gentlemen, something you have not been waiting for: the super villain. The super villain that the Fox and friends encounter is named The Druid. He is a really big, god-like super villain (with a fine mustache and beard, I myself will say) who has been sleeping for a like a really, really, really long time.  The other villain is named Unity.

What I liked about this comic was that the story was cool. I liked that it had cool bad guys and action. And The Druid’s beard and mustache were excellent. That the Fox didn’t know what was going on in the beginning made me laugh, too.

I’d advise you to read it. You can get it at your local comic book shop, probably for 2.99, to learn about the rest of the story.

REVIEW: Afterlife With Archie #1

I guess it’s kind of a bandwagon thing to say these days, but I am (explitive deleted) sick of zombies! They are freaking everywhere, and I keep thinking to myself stuff like, when will it be the werewolves turn to shine? With this in mind, I still approached Afterlife With Archie with an open mind. Throwing what are normally considered all ages characters into a world with death and carnage can really open up the storytelling potential, you know? I’m happy to say that AwA #1, uses this springboard well, and while this issue was mostly all setup, I loved what it was setting up.

I’ve complained in the past that Archie writers lean on Sabrina and magic way too much to set up off the wall story premises, but this time it makes absolutely perfect sense, and the contagion is done in such a way that it can’t just be undone by magic. There are real consequences in this book, and that’s somehting that’s going to make things very interesting in the future. Let’s just say, don’t make Sabrina’s aunties angry.

Another strength of this book is how writer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa writes the characters. Even if you’ve never read an Archie comic before, you can jump in the story without prior knowledge. I actually kind of found it like the opening of a teen horror movie, you start with the catalyst for terror, but you meet all of the Riverdale kids before things get hairy. They go about their normal lives like you’d expect normal teens to do. There is even a Scream-esque conversation between Chuck and Dilton about the Nightmare on Elm Street and Halloween franchises. There is some real heart present as well. The whole shenannigans start just because of the love between a boy and his dog, and a good friend who could see herself in the same situation.

Sabrina and Jughead

The only thing about the writing that felt a little off to me was the captioning. You get a few on the first page to set the scene, but the tone made it seem like a campfire story rather than a tale of true horror. Thankfully, the storytelling is superb and that is in big part because of the masterful work of Francesco Francavilla. The entire presentation of the book make it feel foreboding. Even the non-glossy cover kind of makes this comic feel like there is something just a little creepy about the physical book itself. Fracavilla’s character designs are instantly familiar as Archie and the rest, but they also feel contemporary, and when it’s time for blood and gore, the art delivers in spades. Zombie Jughead is just the right mix of creepy/scary.

That's the last time Mr. Weatherbee assigns Jug a detention!

That’s the last time Mr. Weatherbee assigns Jug a detention!

The only minor knock I can give the art is that the pages have kind of a random blood spatter effect on them. This is cool most of the time, but there are a couple of instances where it is very distracting, like on the negative space of a characters hair, or too near the eyes. I guess it’s supposed to be like your copy of the book is covered in blood, but sometime the effect just pulls you out the tale, which the opposite effect than intended.

One of the last things of note in the book happen after the story. There will be a letter column, which in my opinion is great. Also, there is a creator interview that among other things, intimates that the zombies in Afterlife are going to be a little different than the ones you’ve seen in other media. That tease alone is enough to get me to come back.

All in all, Afterlife With Archie #1 was a very well put together first issue with limitless possibilities and an engrossing atmosphere and story. I suggest you check it out, even if you’re as sick of zombies as I am. It’s well worth a look.

Archie Comics Partners with TapJoy for Digital Rewards

It still astounds me how trailblazing a company Archie Comics is turning out to be. I could go on and on about the things they’ve done in recent years, we at BSR have reported on a good amount of it, after all. This week’s announcement  though? It has the potential to be the greatest thing to happen to digital comics since the advent of tablets. On the other hand, it has the potential to be a disaster of epic proportions as well. Archie Comics/iVerse has teamed with mobile ad firm TapJoy to offer free comics in exchange for the consumer watching/interacting with ads. Here’s the press release, and I’ll elaborate on my thoughts afterward.

ARCHIE COMICS TEAMS WITH TAPJOY TO BECOME FIRST COMIC BOOK PUBLISHER TO OFFER ADVERTISING SPONSORED DIGITAL COMICS

Archie Comics furthers expansion into digital content, offering fans new ways to acquire their favorite comics

Archie Comics, one of the leading mass-market comic book publishers, iVerse, a leading digital content distributor, and Tapjoy, a leading mobile advertising and monetization platform, today announced a partnership that will offer fans a new way to acquire their favorite digital comics for free.  Beginning July 18, the Archie Comics App, available in both iTunes and Google Play stores, will integrate the Tapjoy Mobile Value Exchange® model where consumers engage with advertisements to earn virtual rewards to spend on more than 2,000 Archie Comics.

The new digital offering from Archie Comics and iVerse marks a significant shift in how publishers are making their premium content more widely available to consumers. Archie Comics will be the world’s first digital comic publisher to utilize virtual rewards and the mobile value exchange model to enable consumers to buy their digital comics.

“The teams at Archie Comics and iVerse are pioneers when it comes to digital distribution of some of the most beloved comics ever created,” said Steve Wadsworth, President and CEO, Tapjoy.  “Enabling consumers to simply watch a video or engage with an ad to obtain their favorite comics is an industry-first, and makes Archie and the town of Riverdale more accessible to consumers across the globe.”

“We’re thrilled to partner with Tapjoy and embrace a new way for our consumers to get the comics they love,” said Jon Goldwater, Archie Comics Publisher and co-CEO.  “Making our great content catalog available through a new free-to-own model establishes a new opportunity for how people read comics and will bring even more fans to the Archie universe.”

By simply watching a video, taking a survey or engaging with an ad, users will be able to earn credits to unlock Archie Comics via the Archie Comics app.  This will give fans an opportunity to add to their digital comics library without going over budget.  Archie previously broke new ground by becoming the first comic book publisher to release digital comics the same day as the print edition and continues to blaze trails in unique and innovative steps towards maintaining its status as a leader in the digital marketplace.

Tapjoy is a global leader in helping app developers and publishers monetize many different types of mobile apps including games, movies, books, videos, and text messaging apps.  This partnership further expands Tapjoy’s developer network in the publishing space and opens the door for all types of premium content publishers to offer their content to more fans globally.

At first glance, this is amazing. I mean, who doesn’t want free digital comics? I’ll gladly sit through some advertisements to get the latest issue of Jughead or Mega Man. If it’s successful, this initiative could drastically change the current digital comics model. If it catches on, how long will it be until other publishers follow suit? Free is obviously a better entry point for new readers that 3 or 4 dollars. So, I hope beyond hope that this works out for everyone involved.

Looking at this a bit deeper though? I just don’t know. TapJoy has been surrounded by controversy almost before its inception. Apple themselves have cracked down on TapJoy and their incentiveized app download model. Causing TapJoy to migrate heavily to the Android platform. While that in and of itself doesn’t affect Archie, since it seems that they’ll be exclusively using just the advertising side of things. People who are concerned for their privacy should be a bit wary, however. TapJoy requires access to your unique device ID, to better get a read on what you use, and therefore recommend more apps based on your likes/dislikes. On iOS, it even requires you to install a provisioning profile to do just that, something that Apple themselves may not be too happy with.

Again, it’s too early to tell how things are going to play out, especially since it doesn’t go live until July 18th. I for one will be extremely curious for what this means for digital comics as a whole. As someone once said, time will tell.

More information about Archie Comics can be had here, iVerse here, and TapJoy here.

Walt Simonson Returns to Thor!

Walt Simonson (who I interviewed about his work on Thor here), along with Tom DeFalco, are heading back to work on everyone’s favorite Norse Thunder God, but this time it’s for Archie comics.

I’m not the biggest reader of Archie, but this is definitely something I’ll be getting. Between the whole Kevin Keller thing, their tackling of Occupy Wall Street issues, and this, Archie is proving to be not only relevant, but vital to the comics landscape.

The issue in question hits comic shops this fall.

Here’s the official press release:

New York, NY – This October, Archie and friends tackle the legend of Thor with Tom DeFalco and Walter Simonson on board. The all-star creative team each had celebrated runs crafting the tales of the god-turned-superhero and will deftly combine that experience with the world of Riverdale in a story entitled “Clod of Thunder.” DeFalco is writing the story while Simonson will provide the cover art.

Tom DeFalco got his start in comics working at Archie before going on to become editor-in-chief at Marvel Comics. He continues to write for Archie, often collaborating with Archie superstar artist Fernando Ruiz (Life with Archie) who will provide interiors on Archie #648.

Award-winning writer/artist Walter Simonson is undoubtedly one of the most notable comic creators to work on Marvel’s The Mighty Thor, shaping the character’s fate for nearly a decade. This will be Simonson’s first work for Archie Comics.

Also lending her talents is multiple award winning colorist Laura Martin whose work spans multiple publishers including Marvel and DC Comics. One of the most sought-after colorists in comics, Martin is a two time winner of the Eisner Award for Best Colorist, a Harvey Award winner and also received the Comics Buyer’s Guide Favorite Colorist Award four years in a row.

Archie Comics remains at the forefront of humor in comics, continuously spoofing a wide range of genres from sci-fi to spy thriller to fairy tales. With the superhero genre ripe for parody, it’s the perfect target for Archie to set its sights on while showcasing its versatility of subject matter and ever-growing talent pool.

IN MEMORIAM: George Gladir

George Gladir wrote for Archie Comics, Cracked, as well as some recent issues of Bart Simpson. George also co-created Sabrina the Teenage Witch with Dan De Carlo. It is with a heavy heart that we share the news of his passing last night.

During college I was fortunate enough to work my dream job as comic shop employee at Night Flight Comics. Throughout the years working there I was able to meet some amazing people in the comics industry. I met George Gladir at one of the last signings I worked. He flew in to join local Utah artist Bill Galvan for the event at Library Square.

At the time I had been playing around with a web comic about my vulgar adventures in college. My manager, Mimi Cruz, encouraged me to show George my comic strips. I was terrified by the thought. George Gladir was one of the sweetest old guys I have ever met. He wrote Archie Comics Hell’s sake. Offending him with my crass comics seemed like a sure bet.

Near the end of the day Mimi finally convinced me show him my sketch book. To my surprise he loved what he saw, or at least he was nice enough to say he did. We spoke for a while about my sequential work, as well as the timing of the jokes. He seemed to genuinely laugh at some of them. This is one of my fondest memories from my time at Night Flight.

We wish George’s family peace as they grieve this loss.

Archie Comics Announces ‘Afterlife With Archie’

Oh Archie… If Archie Comics had announced a comic project where America’s Favorite Teens cross over with the undead a few years ago, my groans of derision would have been audible from Hackensack to Walla Walla. Given the press release Archie released though, I’m thinking this may be something worthwhile. The press release is below, I’ll have my thoughts and shed some light on Archie’s previous dabblings in zombie-lore.

Archie Comics, the leading mass market comic book publisher in the world and home to some of the most recognizable pop culture characters, is proud to announce a brand new ongoing series being added to Archie’s line-up entitled: AFTERLIFE WITH ARCHIE.

What if the zombie apocalypse began in Riverdale? This horror-infused comic answers that question when it kicks off in late 2013, spearheaded by one of Hollywood’s hottest writers, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, who will be fresh off the high profile crossover, ARCHIE MEETS GLEE.

AFTERLIFE WITH ARCHIE will provide readers with zombie-filled mayhem like only Archie can, taking the Riverdale gang where they’ve never been before – to the grave and back.

In addition to his Archie credits, Aguirre-Sacasa has made a name for himself in the world of television (writer/producer on GLEE), Broadway musicals (Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark), and movies, penning the remake of Stephen King’s Carrie, which premieres this fall.

“Roberto’s a superstar writer,” said Archie Co-CEO Jon Goldwater. “Working with him on the upcoming AFTERLIFE WITH ARCHIE is the next step in the ever expanding Archie universe.”

“AFTERLIFE WITH ARCHIE combines two of my great passions: Archie comics and horror comics,” said Aguirre-Sacasa. “This series came out of conversations with Jon [Goldwater], asking questions like, ‘what if the Archie characters found themselves in a Stephen King novel like The Stand or a Sam Raimi movie like The Evil Dead?’ Could we pull that off, tonally? We’re really going for it. The first arc is called ‘Escape from Riverdale.’ The second arc is called, brace yourself, ‘Betty RIP.’ Of course, all the horror stuff will be balanced by elements that are quintessentially Archie.”

ABOUT ARCHIE COMICS:
Archie Comics is the leading mass market comic book publishers in the world and the home to a wide array of the most popular humor, action-adventure and superhero characters in entertainment, including Archie, Jughead, Betty and Veronica, Reggie, Kevin Keller, Josie and the Pussycats, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, the New Crusaders, Super Duck, Li’l Jinx and many more. Archie Comics have sold 2 billion comics worldwide and are published around the world in a number of languages. In addition to comics, Archie characters have been featured prominently in animation, television, film and music in various popular incarnations.

So yeah, I think this could actually be a compelling, and dare I say it, fresh take on the seriously over-saturated zombie market. Why do I say that? Three words. Life. With. Archie. The book that showcases the ongoing alternate-universe takes on the Archie-verse in which Archie is married to either Betty or Veronica. It illustrates that the folks at Archie Comics can write a compelling, slightly more adult-oriented story and still feel like an Archie book.  I’m not too familiar with Aguirre-Sacasa’s writing, but I’m sure he’ll do fine. What I’m really concerned about is the art. The teaser image repurposes art from the amazing variant cover to Life With Archie #23 by Francesco Francavilla (shown below) I hope he gets tapped to draw the ongoing, as the style he uses mixes equal parts wholesome and grotesque. If the art leans too far in either of those directions, the book could be ruined, so my fingers are crossed.  At any rate, I’m hoping for the best, and getting in on the ground floor. If nothing else, it’s going to be an interesting ride.

Now, I promised that I’d show some of the Archie gang’s previous dealing with the living dead, so here we go. Recently, the Riverdale crew were turned into a listless zombie-like state during the Archie Meets KISS storyline. They get better…

A little under two years before that, the Mad Dr. Doom (not the one you’re thinking of) turned most of the Riverdale population into zombie-like drones. They get better, again…

The last time Archie and the gang were on the airwaves, there was a zombie outbreak as well, even though this time it was only love zombies. And again, they get better…

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0W8WR9s2rfE

So yeah, I think I’m ready for a more serious take on how such down home, wholesome characters would react to a Romero-style zombie outbreak. Bring it on!

Grab Your Broomsticks! Sabrina Returns to TV in 2013!

Throughout it’s 70+ year history, Archie Comics has done their level best to branch out and get its characters into media other than comics, for more wide-spread consumption. And through those tireless efforts, one of the most successful would have to be the various adaptations of Sabrina, The Teenage Witch. No less than four adaptations have appeared since the character’s creation, and coming in 2013, we’ll be treated to a fifth, Sabrina: Secrets of a Teenage Witch.

Not too many details about the new animated show have leaked, although Ashley Tisdale has been cast as Sabrina. When it comes to plot details, it’s definitely sounds like a re-imagining of the concept. Sabrina is still a teenage witch of course, but rather than living a relatively mundane life in the human world, this new show will have Sabrina actively leading a double life both on Earth and in the magical realm. There also seems to be more of an emphasis on the magic than ever before, as the press release specifically mentions Sabrina will be using spells to attack her enemies. Deep down, I instantly want to dislike something that changes the dynamic so drastically. Then I sit back and realize that I am not the intended audience for this program, and as such will leave it to the intended age group to decide whether it’s a worthwhile endeavor. Regardless, I know I’ll be in front of the tube with my niece when the show appears on the HUB Network next year, to have that shared experience! Further details can be seen in the press release below.

THE HUB TV NETWORK PICKS UP NEW ORIGINAL ANIMATED SERIES

SABRINA: SECRETS OF A TEENAGE WITCH’ FOR SUMMER 2013

Ashley Tisdale to Voice the Title Role

LOS ANGELES – The Hub TV network, a destination for kids and their families, announced today that the pop culture phenomenon SABRINA THE TEENAGE WITCH will return to television in the all-new original animated series, “Sabrina: Secrets of a Teenage Witch.” Actress, singer and High School Musical star Ashley Tisdale will lend her voice to the lead character of Sabrina. Currently in production and slated to premiere in the summer of 2013, the series will feature the iconic teen character re-imagined for a new generation.

The animated “Sabrina: Secrets of a Teenage Witch” series was acquired by The Hub and produced by Moonscoop, Archie Comic Publications, Inc., DSK Group, India, Laughing Lion, and Telegael Teoranta. Writer Dean Batali (“What’s Up Warthogs,” “That 70’s Show,” “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”) will be story editor and Trevor Wall (“Hero 108”) will serve as director for the series.

In the upcoming series “Sabrina: Secrets of a Teenage Witch,” Sabrina is half-witch and half-human, and all super hero as she leads two vastly different lives; one disguised as a normal, klutzy high school student and the other as the top sorcery student in the magical world. When her two worlds collide, Sabrina is the only one who has the power to battle her foes, while managing to keep her magical identity a secret from humankind.

Ashley Tisdale is an actress and singer best known for starring in the Emmy® Award-winning High School Musical film series. The High School Musical series became a successful franchise, which included two television films, a feature movie, a spin-off and numerous soundtrack albums. Tisdale’s work led to a prominent voice role in the critically acclaimed animated series “Phineas & Ferb.” Additional credits include “The Suite Life of Zack & Cody,” “Hellcats,” and, more recently, a multi-episode arc in “Sons of Anarchy” as well as roles in feature films including Aliens in the Attic and the upcoming Scary Movie 5. Tisdale also runs a successful production company, Blondie Girl Productions, and their first series “Miss Advised” premiered on Bravo this summer.

REVIEW: Archie #636

If nothing else, you can say the people at Archie have no problems being experimental with their properties. Case in point, this week’s issue of Archie (#636) has all of the principle characters swapping sexes. In a world where you have things like a time-traveling length of road,  dogs that think like human beings, and a literal teenage witch otherwise unbelievable things like this happen more often that not. That being said, going to the well of Sabrina, the Teenage Witch to make fantastical things happen has been used very often as of late. I do think it’s forgivable this time, because not only does writer Tania Del Rio has an established track record using Sabrina (She wrote her solo title for a respectable 40+ issue run), it’s also just too much fun.

A big part of the enjoyment I got out of the issue is of course, how the character’s interactions/designs are turned on their head. While sexes are reversed and the gang are all in slightly different situations, they are all still recognizable as the characters we know and love. Case in point, Ron (Veronica) and Billy (Betty) still vie for Archina’s (Archie’s) affections, but in this case it’s a show of physical strength rather than feminine wiles. Regina (Reggie) is still an unrepentant jerk/prankster and JJ (Jughead) can still pack away the calories without it showing (though the famous crown has been traded in for a hairstyle that still evokes it).

While the writing is top-notch and clearly shows a love and understanding for the Archies and their motivations, the real star of this issue is the art by Gisele. Her renditions of the group both pre and post magical MacGuffin and a refreshing change up from the usual Archie house style, while still maintaining that flavor. I especially like her rendition of Sabrina, which brings back the widow’s peak hairstyle and slightly mischievous look the character had in her original appearances.

So now the question I have to pose is “What now”? I think this was a very nice one-off, but I can certainly see the potential for an ongoing series, much like the alternate futures presented in Life With Archie. It would give space for these versions of the Archie crew to be further fleshed out, and the story possibilities are endless. You could even take the serious tack and tackle relevant social issues like LwA does. Plus, we’d have a chance to see sex-swapped characters not in this story, such as Kevin (Kevina?) Keller, Big Ethel (Ethan?), Chuck (Chiquita?), Nancy (Nathan?), and Pop (Ma?) Tate.

Archie #636 is in stores and digitally now, and even if you’re the slightest bit curious, I highly recommend you check the issue out. I daresay you won’t be disappointed! For more from Tania Del Rio, check out her website, and for more of Gisele’s lovely art, check out hers as well.

Archie #636 Introduces Gender-swapped Reversedale!

There is one thing that can be said about the current regime at Archie Comics, they are definitely not afraid to throw ideas at the wall to see what sticks. The great thing is that even the most off the wall ideas like Archie/KISS are pretty consistently great. The next big idea comes in the form of Reversedale! That is to say, thanks to the help (read: meddling) of Sabrina’s cat Salem, Archie and pals are having their genders reversed! Have a look at the solicitation, and then I’ll share my own thoughts.

ARCHIE #636

“The Great Switcheroo” – Growing up as a teenage boy can rough! But not more so than a teen girl, right? Upon overhearing the guys and gals of Riverdale grumbling over how the other half has it easier, Sabrina’s mischievous cat Salem turns the town upside down when he dishes out the ultimate genetic makeover! Chaos ensues as the teens discover it’s not as easy to walk in each other’s shoes (or heels!) as they originally thought, so it’s up to Sabrina to set things right! Will Salem’s spell wear off, thus giving the gang a new appreciation for who they are, or will the switch up become permanent? Find out in this off-the-wall issue guest-starring Sabrina the Teenage Witch!

This isn’t the first time Archie and Pals have had their genders reversed, but it is the first time it has been none in an official capacity. I think this has the potential to launch another Life With Archie-esque spinoff book with the continuing adventures of Reversedale. The story possibilities here really are endless. The whole love triangle dynamic is drastically different when genders are reversed. Will Ronnie & Billy still be best friends like Betty & Veronica, or will their testosterone-fueled rivalry get the better of them? Will Jughead go from a woman-hater to a man-hater? There is real opportunity here to show how society treats gender roles. It also could just be a fun story. Regardless of where the story goes, I’m in. The script by Tania del Rio (who certainly knows her Sabrina) is sure to be fun. With art by Gisele (who co-writes and draws my favorite slightly NSFW webcomic Ménage à 3), it’s sure to look great as well.

My only real problem is with gender-swapped Archie’s name. Archina. Really? I understand that for brand recognition, the company wants to keep their flagship character with a recognizable, yet feminine name. Archina is completely fake sounding. Heck, Archette would be better! Honestly though, the simplest solution would be to just keep calling her Archie. It’s not unprecedented, after all. Actress Archana Panjabi goes by Archie and no one seems to mind. I’m over-thinking things. I should just sit back and enjoy the ride, and I suggest you do too when Archie #636 hits comic shops this August!
