The Secret World Of Arrietty Bluray

The Heartwarming Family Adventure

Debuts On 2-Disc Blu-ray Combo Pack and DVD on May 22

BURBANK, Calif., April 13, 2012 –– Walt Disney Studios and the legendary Studio Ghibli (“Ponyo” & “Spirited Away”) proudly open the doors to “The Secret World of Arrietty” on Blu-ray™ Combo Pack and DVD, on May 22, 2012. This visually stunning animated masterpiece stars an illustrious voice cast that includes Will Arnett, Amy Poehler, Bridgit Mendler, Moises Arias, David Henrie and the iconic and much beloved Carol Burnett.

Based on the acclaimed children’s book series “The Borrowers,” by Mary Norton, “The Secret World of Arrietty” is an imaginative tale of “little people” living furtively among us, and the unlikely friendship that forms when their hidden world is discovered. The heartwarming family adventure features beautiful, stylized animation and timeless themes of friendship, courage and determination.

In addition to the stunning Blu-ray hi-definition picture and digital sound, the 2-DiscCombo Pack includes an array of bonus features that will fascinate animation fans, including a storyboard version of the film and the original Japanese trailers and TV commercials. Additional features include music videos for the songs “Summertime” performed by Disney Channel star Bridgit Mendler, who is the speaking voice of Arrietty; and the movie’s theme song “Arrietty’s Song” performed by French singer/songwriter Cécile Corbel.

An enthralling story, with the English language version directed by 7-time Academy Award®-winner Gary Rydstrom, “The Secret World of Arrietty” is a remarkable filmmaking achievement that families will want to add to their home entertainment collections and enjoy over and over.

Residing quietly beneath the floorboards are little people who live undetected in a secret world to be discovered. Arrietty (voice of Bridgit Mendler), a tiny, but tenacious 14-year-old, lives with her parents (voices of Will Arnett and Amy Poehler) in the recesses of a suburban garden home, unbeknownst to the homeowner and her housekeeper (voice of Carol Burnett). Like all little people, Arrietty (AIR-ee-ett-ee) remains hidden from view, except during occasionalcovert ventures beyond the floorboards to “borrow” scrap supplies like sugar cubes from her human hosts.

But when 12-year-old Shawn (voice of David Henrie), a human boy who comes to stay in the home, discovers his mysterious housemate one evening, a secret friendship blossoms. If discovered, their relationship could drive Arrietty’s family from the home and straight into danger. From the legendary Studio Ghibli (“Spirited Away,” “Ponyo”) comes “The Secret World of Arrietty,” an animated adventure based on Mary Norton’s acclaimed children’s book series “The Borrowers.”

The film was directed by Hiromasa Yonebayashi and produced by Toshio Suzuki. Gary Rydstrom directed the English-language version of “The Secret World of Arrietty” from a screenplay written by Karey Kirkpatrick. The producers include Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall. The original Japanese screenplay was written by Hayao Miyazaki and Keiko Niwa.

Anime Update: 3/07/2012 – Gundam Rap and Hetalia!

I’m starting this week off with a video. Why? Because one of our awesome readers (thanks Matt!) sent me this Gundam Rap album preview and I can’t get the song “White Reflection” out of my head! This was recently featured on TOKYOPOP but if you didn’t catch it you need to watch now:

Richie Branson, keep up the good work. You’ve made my week! You can find more about Branson’s album here.

And now for to the update:

This week we’ve got Hetalia: Axis Powers – the Complete Series out on DVD. What will become of my favorite characters: Japan, Germany and Italy? I suppose I’ll have to pick up the collection and find out! This is one of those series that just has to be seen to be believed, and I highly recommend the English version for the terrible accents and ridiculous translations for U.S. distribution. The release should also hopefully mean that we’ll soon see World Series on the Netflix instant streaming service, too! You can pick up the whole series now for list price $44.98 or the Amazon price at $34.99.

Anime Update: Warner Bros and Viz Media announce Live-action Bleach Movie

Am I excited about the following news from Warner Brothers that a live action Bleach movie will be made? Well, I suppose I should be honest and say, “Not really,” but only because I was not impressed with the Japanese live action adaptation of Death Note or the absolute train wreck that was the live action Dragonball: Evolution. (As I said in a post last year – “In my opinion, it might be the worst live action adaptation of any anime series. Even the trailer was completely terrible.”)

To be even more honest with you, I don’t really feel that anime translates to live action all that well.  Also, it’s important to note that the Bleach anime series in particular falls victim to one of the unfortunate side effects of long-running-anime – SO MUCH FILLER and unnecessary monologues!!! As usual, they are taking on a pretty huge task by trying to translate a manga / anime like Bleach to the big screen AND somehow make it appeal to a wider audience. The series never really seemed to me like one that would even remotely appeal to non-anime watchers, but hey, you never know, they could surprise me! Here is an example of what I feel would be fairly difficult to pull off in a live action adaptation of the series (unless, of course, they have an excellent CGI budget and fantastic crew):

And here’s the official Press Release from 2/22/2012:

Pictures has acquired the live-action feature film rights to the hit manga and anime property BLEACH. The announcement comes after another successful year for BLEACH in print, digital publishing, cable television, streaming video, consumer products and video-on-demand.

“BLEACH has built a huge international following in its manga and anime formats, and we’re excited that Warner Bros. shares our belief that BLEACH can also become a fantastic live-action film,” said Jason Hoffs of VIZ Productions, VIZ Media’s Hollywood-based production company. “BLEACH is an exciting opportunity to mix Japanese and Hollywood storytelling to create something new for the big screen, and we’re thrilled for the opportunity to further expose its unique characters and story to film audiences everywhere.”

The film’s creative team also includes screenwriter Dan Mazeau, who recently penned Warner Bros.’ upcoming sequel to CLASH OF THE TITANS. From VIZ Productions, Hoffs will serve as Producer, and Branon Coluccio will be Executive Producer. Screenplay development will commence in 2012.

The popular BLEACH animated and manga series, created by Tite Kubo, follows the adventures of Ichigo, a teenager with the ability to see ghosts. When his family is attacked by a Hollow — a malevolent lost soul – Ichigo encounters Rukia, a Soul Reaper tasked to hunting Hollows, and inadvertently absorbs her powers. Now, Ichigo must dedicate his life to protecting the innocent and helping tortured souls find peace.

BLEACH is a tremendously successful multimedia property around the world. The manga has been licensed to more than a dozen countries and has over 75 million copies in print in Japan alone. The BLEACH animated series (rated TV-14) has topped the ratings on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim, sold over 1.8 million DVDs and consistently ranked among Hulu’s most watched shows, This success has further spawned an array of related video games (over 820,000 sold), apparel, action figures, trading cards and other merchandise.

INTERVIEW: Vic Mignogna

I had the opportunity this weekend to chat with anime voice actor Vic Mignogna. Vic is famous for his portrayals of Edward Elric in Fullmetal Alchemist and Tamaki Suou in Ouran High School Host Club, as well as for his work as Broly in Dragon Ball Z and Death Scythe in Soul Eater. You might even know him from my personal favorite – Fullmetal Panic – as the American soldier Kurtz Weber.

Vic is currently promoting the recently released Fullmetal Alchemist: The Sacred Star of Milos, now playing in cities across the U.S. and Canada. (You can find a full list of locations here). The film, which premiered on January 20th in North America, follows the adventures of the Elric brothers to Table City as they attempt to track down an escaped prisoner. Events in the film take place during the plot of the Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood continuity.

And Vic’s not only a talented voice actor, singer, and media guru – he’s one of the geeks! Listen as Vic shares with us awesome stories about growing up with Star Trek, his trip to Japan where he met Romi Paku, voice actor antics, cosplaying at conventions, and upcoming projects like “Star Trek Continues,”  which I’m psyched to see develop over the next year!

Listen to the interview here!

Above: Vic as Captain Kirk and as a Klingon (at right).

For more about Vic, check out his website at www.vicsworld.net. You can find tons of cool stuff (like upcoming convention appearances) on his official fanclub’s website at www.risemboolrangers.com. Fullmetal Alchemist: The Sacred Star of Milos comes to DVD April 24th (and you can pre-order it now). Also, make sure to check out the Star Trek Continues Facebook Page!

Danny Choo’s Season 2 of Culture Japan on Crunchyroll

Hey everybody! In case you missed out on this season of Culture Japan, you can now find Season 2 in its entirety on Crunchyroll. Episodes from this season explore north-eastern Japan after the major Earthquake, Wonderfestival, worldwide anime events, Otaroad, Edo Wonderland park (one of my favorite episodes), and more!

For those of you not familiar with his work, Danny Choo is pretty much the expert of popular Japanese Culture. He runs several websites, releases his own television series, and has his hand in a ton of projects with several high-profile Japanese companies. I have spent hours on his website just looking at photo articles since 2006, and there is so much to look at nowadays that there’s pretty much something for anybody even remotely interested in Japan, anime, manga, figures, etc. (He’s even hiring lots of Japanese translation and web programming gurus lately so if you think you’ve got the skills head on over to this page and check out his most recent job postings. Some come with visa sponsorship and a free plane ticket to Japan!)

Missed Season 1 of Culture Japan? You can check out the entire Digest of Season One right now:

New show by creator of Cowboy Bebop

Roughly ten years ago I watched a 26 episode anime called Cowboy Bebop and it changed my life. It’s still my favorite show of all time and the music is to die for. A couple of years later the creator of Cowboy Bebop Shinichirō Watanabe came out with another series titled Samurai Champloo which was not better then Cowboy Bebop but still better then most everything that has come out. Basically I realized at that point that Watanabe was a master, but he was the type to wait long periods in between shows. However the wait is finally over as he is officially starting his third show in April. The Japanese title is Sakamichi no Apollon and the English title might end up being called “Kids on a Slope”. We’ve got the 30 second teaser trailer for you right here which came out on Thursday.

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8b8M4pO4tBs

The other big news is that he is teaming once again with the amazing composer Yoko Kanno, who brought the amazing soundtrack of Cowboy Bebop to life. Anyone who could find and place this song into a series is a genius.

Sailor Moon Art

Though the manga series ended and the anime hasn’t been aired in the U.S. for years, Naoko Takeuchi’s Sailor Moon characters continue to live in the hearts and minds of its fans.  And there must still be a lot of them, because the re-release of the manga was the second best-selling of 2011 (just beneath Naruto).

Volume 3 was just released this past week, and Volume 4 will be released on March 13, with more following.

And when I came across Jared MacPherson’s page at DeviantArt, I just knew I had to share it.  He also has a Facebook page where you can view his art.  His Sailor Moon images are extraordinary.  Though I prefer some over others, he has created a series of movies posters for the characters and depicted them more realistically than their cartoon counterparts.

I thought I was the only one who thought Sailor Moon resembled Sarah Michelle Gellar, but the comments on his page reveal that others thought so, too.  Still, I thought the poster images were very interesting and dynamic.  Definitely worth a look.  I’ve shared a few here:

And while I like the artistic style of the Sailor Moon piece below, I think the girls are a bit overly sexualized.  Aren’t they supposed to be teenagers?   Ah, a little artistic license, I suppose. (and they do age as the series goes on . . .)  MacPherson admits that he used swimsuit models as templates for the poses, which helps explain that to some degree.

What are your thoughts?
