REVIEW: Star Wars: The Clone Wars 2.8 “Brain Invaders”

 brain invaders

Wow.

That’s pretty much the best word I can use to describe this episode. After capturing Poggle the Lesser from the Geonosian Queens lair in the last episode, they need to race him back to the Republic to debrief him. Unfortunately, Master Windu, fighting on Dantooine (and I wonder if this is the same conflict that occurred during Genndy Tartakovsky’s animated Clone Wars run) is in dire need of medical supplies. Ord Cestus, where the supplies are located, are in the opposite direction, so it is decided that the Padawans will handle the supply mission on their own.

Unfortunately, those Brain slugs from the last episode have infected their Clones and they’re standing alone against them.

This episode was pretty damned thrilling. (In fact, if you haven’t watched it, it’s available to download for free on Star Wars.com for the next week). Eventually, the brain slugs infect everyone on the ship except Ahsoka and Anakin is left to interrogate Poggle the Lesser in order to find out how to stop the mind-controlling bugs and save his Padawan.

There is one moment in the entire episode that will have everyone talking. No doubt, it will have every review of this episode centered around it.

If you’ve seen the episode, you know which moment I’m speaking of. Anakin’s interrogation of Poggle.

Earlier in the episode, Ahsoka comments to Barris Offee that she wonders how peace will sit with her master and adds that he can be a little over-zealous in doing WHATEVER needs doing to get the job done. The interrogation scene illustrates this completely and foreshadows what we should have expected out of Vader during his interrogation of Princess Leia in A New Hope. It was frightening and evil. And amazing.

The use of music in the scene was chilling and the animation in Anakin’s face (and the red lighting) was a master stroke.

Aside from this moment, though, my other favorite was everything between Ahsoka and Barris Offee after Barris was infected with a brain slug. The fighting was very fun to watch and culminated in a moment where Barris has the presence of mind enough to ask Ahsoka to kill her. The editing is put together in such a way that I couldn’t tell if Ahsoka took her head off or not. It was quite a thing to see.

Overall, I think this may be my favorite season 2 episode so far.
