REVIEW: My Little Pony Friendship is Magic Royal Wedding

My Little Pony – Friendship Is Magic: Royal Pony Wedding is now available on DVD, and fans and bronies and people who like horses and unicorns and hearts and flowers will love this adorable and sugary compilation of five episodes of the popular television series.

And no, I’m not being sarcastic.  I grew up with My Little Pony and had the stable playset and baby ponies and rainbow-haired ponies and ponies that had glittery designs on their butts.  Haunches.  Whatever.

The first two episodes on the DVD are the two episodes that complete the Royal Pony Wedding saga:  “A Canterlot Wedding, Part 1” and “A Canterlot Wedding, Part 2.”  The pony Twilight Sparkle (a name that always makes me think of sparkly vampires and Twilight) is hurt and angry that her beloved brother Shining Armor is marrying Cadence, the niece of Princess Celestia.  She has nothing against Cadence, who ponysat for her in her younger days, but she cannot believe her brother has kept this very important information from her.  Not cool, big brother.

But something isn’t right, because Cadence has Bride-Pony-Zilla-itis, but only Twilight Sparkle can see it.  Her pony friends are too wrapped up in cakes and dresses and wedding decorations to see that there’s something rotten in Canterlot.

The next episode is “Hearts And Hooves Day,” which is the pony equivalent of Valentine’s Day.  A well-meaning love potion turns out to be more disastrous than anticipated, and the ponies learn an importation lesson about meddling in romance.

“Sweet & Elite” follows the pony Rarity as she visits Canterlot.  Unfortunately, her head is turned by ponies in the upper class, and she struggles to be accepted by them.  However, she doesn’t know how to combine her new world with the simpler world of Ponyville, and the two worlds collide as Rarity learns about friendship and being proud of where you come from.

“The Best Night Ever” is a party thrown by Princess Celestia, and all the ponies have a specific dream they want to accomplish during the magical evening.  Things don’t turn out quite how they expected but will they still have a great time in spite of it?

Each episode features catchy new songs, and I think the show is adorable.  I hadn’t seen any episodes until I received this DVD, but it’s easy to pick up who the characters are and their personality traits within an episode or two.  I highly recommend it.

Plus, one of the bonus features is a coloring sheet !
