A Locke and Key adaptation has been kicking around for awhile, and now it looks like it’s headed back to the big screen. The comic series had originally been optioned by Dimension Films to develop into a movie, but when that didn’t go anywhere, the rights went to Dreamworks who were able to get none other than Steven Spielberg on board to produce the project. After deciding that there was too much material to include in a movie, the project was transformed into a TV show that would continue to be produced by Dreamworks, but broadcast on one of the many Fox Television channels. A pilot was filmed and had been well received by those who had seen it (including attendees of 2011 Comic-Con), but Fox decided to quash the series and unload the rights on a different studio.
According to a story by Latino-Review, Universal will pick up where Fox left off and bring it back to the big screen, not just as one movie, but as a trilogy that will be produced and written by Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci (both writers/producers on Star Trek, Fringe, and a host of other TV shows and films) who were part of the original creative team attached back when it was with Dimension. No release date, director or actors have been announced yet, but for anyone who is a fan of the comic (and you should be, it’s excellent!), this comes as exciting news on a project that was long thought to be dead.
