Will Muppets 2 be released in time for Christmas in 2013? It looks that way according to IGN. December 20 is the target date for the sequel to Disney’s successful film The Muppets, which brought back the lovable gang to a whole new generation of fans. We first learned back in March about the sequel, but more details have recently been released. It does still look like Jason Segel will not be involved in the new production, however.
The plot will be a caper set in Europe, with London being the likely focus since filming is supposed to begin there in January. But will it simply be a rehash of The Great Muppet Caper? That was also, um, a caper set in London. Fans of the film may remember that Jim Henson himself appeared in a brief cameo in the film. Ah, the memories of the original Muppet films.
And though it’s great the new films are bringing the characters back into the limelight, I don’t know if I’ll ever get used to Miss Piggy’s voice when not voiced by Frank Oz. I’ve never had a problem with Steve Whitmire’s Kermit for some reason, but since I’m much more obsessed with Oz’s characters (read: Yoda) it’s much easier for me to hear both the subtle and not-so-subtle differences.
Still, I’m looking forward to the new film, and we do know a few things already:
Bret McKenzie is returning to write the songs for the new film.
Christoph Waltz is in talks to play an Interpol Inspector. (Every time I see the word Interpol I think of Carmen Sandiego . . . )
There’s also news that a Russian femme fatale has yet to be cast.
Stay tuned!
