Movie crossovers are so hot right now.
In this article from Deadline Hollywood, Universal Pictures has announced grand designs to give their classic monster properties like “The Mummy” and “Dracula” a re-vamp—pun intended. Not only will we be seeing modernized incarnations of our favorite Universal monsters, but the studio is planning on taking a page from the Marvel playbook by having each film create potential crossover opportunities as their new cinematic world unfolds.
Universal has hired screenwriters Alex Kurtzman (“Star Trek,” “Cowboys & Aliens,” “Mission: Impossible 3”) and Chris Morgan (“The Fast and the Furious,” “47 Ronin”) to helm this massive project, and the word is that the franchise will be kicked off in 2016 by that dusty old tyrant Imhotep in a reboot of “The Mummy.”
Though this sounds like an achingly familiar trip back to what Stephen Sommers was trying to do when he inflicted “Van Helsing” upon us, I think the idea of giving each creep his/her own film and then throwing them all together for a glorious, paranormal battle royale has some potential.
Now that we have a few years of speculation before these films actually show up in theaters, which classic Universal monsters would you like to see duke it out in a kiddie pool filled with watermelon Jell-O? Let us know in the comments section, friends.
