Box Office Monday

Once again “Thor: The Dark World” is our weekend winner but the big story for this weekend is the second place film. “The Best Man Holiday” earned $30 million on a budget of $17 million in its opening weekend. I had never heard of this movie or the movie it is a sequel of that came out 14 years ago (openeing at $9 million). However, I am not the target demographic. The success of “The Best Man Holiday” proves that the black male demographic is a viable market and producing good movies aimed at this market can work. Below are the full weekend results.

  1. Thor: The Dark World: $38.4 million in its second week bringing the domestic gross to just shy of $147 million. Thor has perfomed slightly better than “Skyfall” which opened the same weekend last year and a smaller fall of than Iron Man 3.
  2. The Best Man Holiday: $30.5 million on 2k screens for the opening weekend.
  3. Last Vegas: $8.8 million for a total of $46.9 million into its third week.
  4. Free Birds: $8.3 million for a total of $42 million in its third week, apparantley old men in vegas > cgi turkeys.
  5. Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa: $7.6 million for a total of $90 million. Yeah, I’m surprised too.

“Gravity”  in it’s 7th weekbounced back into 6th above “Ender’s Game” at 7. “Gravity” has made over $500 million so far. I’m not sure Ender can be called a flop but it has yet to make its budget back on the worldwide gross.
