Box Office Monday

“Lone Survivor” hit big, with a $38.5 million, making it one of the best January box offices ever. There wasn’t much competition over the weekend but the Mark Wahlberg film had a great weekend for its first week in wide release. “The Legend of Hercules” was the only movie in its true opening weekend and it bombed. $8.6 million on a budget of $70 million, you can read BSR’s review here and see why that isn’t a surprise.

  1. Lone Survivor: $38.5 million and the second highest January opening.
  2. Frozen: Yes, still. $15 million and pushing the total domestic to $317 million. Still killing it after 8 weeks.
  3. The Wolf Of Wall Street: $9 million and falling, not great news unless Oscar comes knocking.
  4. The Legend Of Hercules: $8.6 million and half was on inflated ticket prices from 3D showings.
  5. American Hustle: Also $8.6 million, which I will adjust once the actuals come out instead of the estimates. This should push it over $100 million.

Update: Now that the actuals are in, Hercules took 3rd with $8.868, Wolf was 4th with $8.839 and Hustle 5th with $8.3

Next weekend we’ve got a horror flick, a kids movie about CGI squirrels that uses “Gangnam Style” in trailers, a Jack Ryan film with minimal marketing, and Ice Cube and Kevin Hart in a buddy cop movie. I’m predicting bombs everywhere, or a basic January.
