Box Office Monday

UPDATE: The official number for “Catching Fire” is $158 million, putting it below Dark Knight Rises & Dark Knight.

“Catching Fire” or as I like to call it, Hunger Games 2, made a huge statement this weekend. If the Sunday estimates hold this film will have beat out “The Dark Knight Rises”  and will have taken DKR’s spot as the 4th highest opening of all time. All 3 films above it on the list had the extra help from 3D showings (thanks for not succumbing to the trend Hunger Games 2) as well.

Real quick, just know that things can change tomorrow. I’ll update if they do but currently the results are based on an estimate. Every weekend the studios base the box office returns on Friday, Saturday, and then use those to estimate Sunday. Usually this works but if they are wrong Batman will still hold onto his 4th place spot.

Alright here is the full breakdown:

  1. Catching Fire: $161 miillion and good ratings, word of mouth should carry it to a strong second week.
  2. Thor: The Dark World: $14.1 million. A huge drop from last weeks $85 million. Still over $500 million worldwide gross though. Still sad to see such a big fall.
  3. The Best Man Holiday: $12.5 million. Another huge drop, almost 60%.
  4. Delivery Man: $8.2 million. HUGE BOMB. A bigger bomb than Vince Vaughn’s last few movies. I guess nobody wants to see a movie about him donating a whole lotta sperm. Weird.
  5. Free Birds: $5.3 million. Well the turkey movie still hasn’t made back its $55 million budget but I’m betting we still see this next week, helped by the Thanksgiving holiday.

Next week Disney comes in with “Frozen” but I’m thinking that Hunger Games 2 holds strong. “Old Boy”, the Americanized version, opens as well but I’m not predicting success on that one.
