‘Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1’ First Look

Spoilers for “Catching Fire” and “Mockingjay” below!

When we last saw Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) at the end of “Catching Fire,” she had just discovered that District 12 was destroyed and Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson) and Johanna Mason (Jena Malone) had been taken from the Hunger Games arena to the capitol. With her home destroyed and Peeta in the hands of rose fanatic President Snow, Katniss must face all new obstacles in the next installment in the popular “Hunger Games” franchise, in which she becomes . . .

The Mockingjay.

Lionsgate revealed today the motion poster for the new film in the series:

In addition to the poster and several updates to the official website, there’s this first look at President Alma Coin, portrayed by actress Julianne Moore.  Those eyes are intense.

And, an interview in which she talks about Katniss: “She’s a real girl and she also has some moral ambiguity. She doesn’t feel like she always knows what the right thing is to do. She acts from her impulses.” She also describes District 13: “District 13 really looks like a bomb shelter . . . basically the capitol believes they’ve destroyed this district and everyone is dead . . . It’s people barely getting by.”

She says she had a lot of fun working with Jennifer Lawrence on the set, and after reading all of the books decided she had to be in the film. She sees President Coin as a more sympathetic character than Katniss does, and I think we’ll see another dimension to Coin when she’s not seen through the filter of Katniss’ narration in the books.

One thing I do know for sure is that we’re in for some angst and emotion in the next two films.

“Mockingjay Part 1” opens in theaters November 21.
