So, once again it looks like we get to see the badass side of Spock in this sequel to JJ Abrams 2009 reboot.
In case you were wondering, that’s Zachary Quinto as Spock going all neck nerve pinchy on Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays an as yet unnamed villain.
If you’re not familiar with Cumberbatch, I highly recommend the BBC’s Sherlock, an update on Sherlock Holmes set in modern times with Cumberbatch as the eponymous detective played as somewhere between having Asberger’s and being superhumanly intelligent, and Martin Freeman (The Hobbit, Hitchiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, UK version of The Office) as Watson, who in this version is a wounded Afghanistan veteran. It’s on Netflix Instant Watch and there are only a few episodes. Highly Recommend.
But, from the looks of it, I think we can rule out that he is playing Khan, Harry Mudd, or any other major recurring villain from the original Star Trek. And no sign of forehead ridges, pointy ears, or antennae, so not a Klingon, Romulan, or Andorian.
So let the speculation commence– what does this mean? (if anything)
And, speaking for myself, this looks f@#$ing awesome. Can’t wait for this movie. Star Trek: Revenge of the Nerd Rage (and Lens Flares) comes out summer 2013.
UPDATE: Here’s a tweet from Damon Lindelof about the photo: The weird thing about that Trek photo is we weren’t even shooting. Quinto just really hates Cumberbatch. #IHateLeaks
