While it looked as though “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” may not stay at the top spot on Friday it eventually beat out newcomer “Rio 2” (Our Review) by a few million. On Friday “Rio 2” actually beat out TWS but as the weekend progressed Cap worked his way back into 1st place. Cap is looking good so far, a 56% drop from opening is a bit much but there isn’t any super hero competition until May. “Rio 2” is in the same boat, any other animated films have worked their way out of contention and there is nothing coming up for a while. “Rio 2” opened up almost identically to the first “Rio” and should do well over all. The other 2 new films this week, “Oculus” (Our Review) and “Draft Day” opened up considerably lower at $12 and $9 million. However, “Oculus” was made on just $5 so it has already done well and matched similar films. Kevin Costner however is continuing his streak with low openings and honestly “Draft Day” looked like a “Moneyball” wannabe.
- Captain America: The Winter Soldier: $41.4 million and a 56% drop. $477 made worldwide and yet to expand to Japan.
- Rio 2: A solid $39 million for week its first week.
- Oculus: $12 million is a good start but it may not break $30 in the long run.
- Draft Day: $9.75 million to open isn’t a great start, I expect it to drop significantly.
- Divergent: Adding $7.5 million to its total after 4 weeks this film is up to just shy of $125 million domestically.
In non top 5 news, “The Grand Budapest Hotel” has become the first ever Wes Anderson film to crack $100 million worldwide. It is currently just below $40 million in the US.
Next week the only new film is “Heaven Is For Real” a Christian film starring Greg Kinnear.
