Box Office Report

With Johnny Depp opening a movie you’d think there would be more movement in the top 5. However, “Transcendence” bombed at $10.8 million which was $12 million behind “Rio 2” in its second week. It’s hard to say if bad marketing, a bad movie or both are to blame but it looks like “Transcendence” will be closing well short of Depp’s more recent films, even others that bombed. Coming in behind “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” was newcomer “Heaven is for Real” which pulled in a decent $22.5 million and became another high performing Christian themed film this year. There have been a few in recent months showing that the audience segment is still viable for studios.

  1. Captain America: The Winter Soldier: Dipping by 38% to $25.5 million Cap has reached over $200 million domestically.
  2. Heaven is for Real: $22.5 million during its opening weekend and almost $30 since it opened on Wednesday.
  3. Rio 2:  A 44% drop down to $22.1 million in week 2.
  4. Transendence: $10.8 million to open on a $100 million budget. Yikes.
  5. A Haunted House 2: $8.8 million and my utter surprise these movies are still being released in theaters instead of straight to video.

Next week a few smaller films open, then things get real when Spider-Man comes back to town.
