There was no doubt in my mind that “Godzilla” would be our champion, check out our review. The marketing was smart, the character is loved, people have forgotten about the shitty one with the P.Diddy Led Zepplin soundtrack. However, Godzilla didn’t just win the weekend, he kicked ass across the year taking second place just behind Captain America. Just look at the top 5 and see how much of a beat down he put on everyone else.
- Godzilla: $93.1 and another $103 overseas in week one.
- Neighbors: $25 and about 40% drop from last week. Doing damn well at $90.5 total gross.
- The Amazing Spider-Man 2: Another 53% plummet for Mr. Parker. $16.8 and $172 total gross.
- Million Dollar Arm: $10.5 for the Disney sports flick, not awful but not particularly good. Needs another $15 to make its budget back.
- The Other Woman: $6.3 and a 34% drop puts this to $71.6 total gross.
Next week we get X-Men and I gotta say I can see them beating everyone this year but that means they need a massive opening. They need to get up to $96 million. Guess we will see next Monday.
A quick note on budgets and dollar figures:
Films making back their budgets is a good sign, but that is just the money to film. It doesn’t include distribution and marketing. Marketing can cost as much as a film. That big Superbowl spot is spendy. So take that into account when judging a films success. Hitting $100 million isn’t the same as it once was.
All dollar amounts in the top 5 come from estimates based on ticket sales unless noted otherwise. Occasionally this article will be published when actual results come out, which is usually late Monday afternoon. For more about this and other ins and outs of movie tracking click here.
