Box Office Report

There were 3 new movies over the weekend and not a single one gave TMNT a run for their money. “Let’s Be Cops,” “The Expendables 3,” and “The Giver” all placed in the Top 5 but not a one could beat the success of “Guardians of the Galaxy” and “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.” Dropping down to a PG-13 didn’t help Expendables one bit. It is down 43% from the second film, who wants to see the same movie they’ve seen twice but with less of what made it interesting? The movie was also leaked onto the internet a few weeks ago, that probably didn’t help a whole lot.

“Guardians of the Galaxy” surpassed “Thor: The Dark World” and is close on the tail of “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” which made about $260 million.

Weekend Gross % Change     Total Gross   Week #
1   Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles    $28,400,000 -56.7%       $117,642,000   2
2   Guardians of the Galaxy   $24,735,000 -41.3%       $222,281,000   3
3   Let’s Be Cops   $17,700,000       $26,107,000   1
4   The Expendables 3   $16,200,000       $16,200,000   1
5   The Giver . $12,760,000       $12,760,000   1

Next weekend gives us the “Sin City” sequel which we should have a review of shortly and a few smaller films, who knows how the Top 5 will turn out with those.

A quick note on budgets and dollar figures:
Films making back their budgets is a good sign, but that is just the money to film. It doesn’t include distribution and marketing. Marketing can cost as much as a film. That big Superbowl spot is spendy. So take that into account when judging a films success. Hitting $100 million isn’t the same as it once was.

All dollar amounts in the top 5 come from estimates based on ticket sales unless noted otherwise. Occasionally this article will be published when actual results come out, which is usually late Monday afternoon. For more about this and other ins and outs of movie tracking click here.
