Box Office Report

The last time the Box Office made less money than it did over the weekend was September 5-7, 2008. This weekend barely edged that by $1.2 million, making $51.5 million. There really were just not a lot of options at the theater. The only new film was an Elvisy rip-off, “The Identical” aimed at Christians that bombed…HARD. How hard? $1.59 million and 12th place. In it’s 7th week in theaters “Lucy” was 2 spots higher than that, at the bottom of the Top Ten.

“Guardians of the Galaxy” continued to do well and is up there with giants like “Avatar” and “The Dark Knight” for weekends spent in first place. It is also close to beating out “Iron Man” needing just $24 million more.

Rank    Title      Weekend Gross    % Change     Total Gross   Week #
1    Guardians of the Galaxy   $10,357,345 -39.4%       $294,765,199   6
2    Teenage Mutant    $6,506,688 -45.4%       $174,653,217   5
3    Let’s Be Cops   $5,568,871 -32.8%       $66,766,954   4
4    If I Stay   $5,555,244 -40.3%       $39,468,624   3
5    The November Man   $4,307,680 -45.6%       $17,978,019   2

Don’t expect anything better next weekend….the upcoming films do not look like they will do any better.

A quick note on budgets and dollar figures:
Films making back their budgets is a good sign, but that is just the money to film. It doesn’t include distribution and marketing. Marketing can cost as much as a film. That big Superbowl spot is spendy. So take that into account when judging a films success. Hitting $100 million isn’t the same as it once was.

All dollar amounts in the top 5 come from estimates based on ticket sales unless noted otherwise. Occasionally this article will be published when actual results come out, which is usually late Monday afternoon. For more about this and other ins and outs of movie tracking click here.
