The Box Office results for September 12-14, 2014 were…less than stellar. There have been very few worthwhile movies to come out in the last month and the box office reports show it. In fact nothing has broken $20 million since TMNT. This weekend finally saw the home invasion film “No Good Deed” hit $24.25 million. I love Idris Elba, I’d watch him in almost anything, but all these films look the same and feel boring to me. Along with “No Good Deed” the new film releases were “Dolphin Tales 2” and in less than 1,000 theaters the Tom Hard film “The Drop.”
In news you care about “Guardians of the Galaxy” became the first movie to break $300 million since “Frozen.” It has now made $611.5 million worldwide.

Friday sees the release of “The Maze Runner” which should shake up the box office a bit, and we get a few small films starting to leak out including “Tusk.”
A quick note on budgets and dollar figures:
Films making back their budgets is a good sign, but that is just the money to film. It doesn’t include distribution and marketing. Marketing can cost as much as a film. That big Superbowl spot is spendy. So take that into account when judging a films success. Hitting $100 million isn’t the same as it once was.
