Box Office Report

While the last installment of “The Hobbit” may have been the top picture, it was definitely not the interesting story at the Box Office. The heavily hyped “Unbroken” performed very well for a film of it’s type. It also another success for Universal who has had 8 films debut above $25 million this year. The movie had a lot of marketing hype and hype from being helmed by Angelina Jolie, so while it didn’t take first place it still performed well.

“Into the Woods” also performed well in its genre and probably got a bit of help from having a solid cast and being fantasy based with Disney fairytale films being big right now. The number 4 & 5 films both saw increases over the holidays, with “Night at the Museum” going 20% from it’s opening weekend. Both films heavily benefited from the holiday weekend.

What you won’t see on the list is “The Interview” which opened up at $1.8 million and played in 331 theaters. However, if you added that to it’s online earnings and started from Christmas it would crack the top 5. Variety reports that is has earned around $15 million online that iTunes began offering the film yesterday.
