Box Office Report

It is apparently 2005. Somehow SpongeBob is still crazy popular and ruled the box office. It actually made about $20 million more than the original movie. They gave the crew super powers, they put them in 3D, they had a lot of fun. It worked well for them and should hold onto a top spot for a few more weeks.

Other new films didn’t fare so well. ‘Jupiter Ascending’ bombed. The Wachowskis’ pick some interesting films and they get big-budgets ($176 million) but the films fail to deliver. They haven’t had a hit since 2003, you can see our review of it here. ‘Seventh Son’ also bombed, as predicted. The film never had a chance, it has been sitting on the shelf getting passed around distributors for two and a half years. It was a bad film that was doomed from the start.

Next week we get “The Kingsman” and “Fifty Shades of Grey.”

A quick note on budgets and dollar figures:
Films making back their budgets is a good sign, but that is just the money to film. It doesn’t include distribution and marketing. Marketing can cost as much as a film. That big Superbowl spot is spendy. So take that into account when judging a film’s success. Hitting $100 million isn’t the same as it once was.

All dollar amounts in the top 5 come from estimates based on ticket sales unless noted otherwise. Occasionally this article will be published when actual results come out, which is usually late Monday afternoon. For more about this and other ins and outs of movie tracking click here.
