Box Office Report

Did you know what “Focus” was about based on the marketing? Con artists or something right? Yeah, that right there is probably why it was not a big hit for Will Smith. He hasn’t really done a lot in the past few years, “MIB3” and “After Earth” are all. Still, the movie wasn’t a bomb. It has already made more than “Mortdecai” and “Blackhat” combined. There also isn’t a lot to see in theaters right now.

“Kingsman: The Secret Service” has maintained pretty well, dropping just 35% (about the same as “Spongbob”) in its third week taking it to over $85 million. “Spongebob” has now made just shy of $140 million, about $7 million shy of “Fifty Shades of Grey.” Fifty Shades had the steepest drop, 53%, and will be out of the top 5 very soon. That doesn’t mean this BDSM train is stopping though, its made over $500 million worldwide.

A quick note on budgets and dollar figures:
Films making back their budgets is a good sign, but that is just the money to film. It doesn’t include distribution and marketing. Marketing can cost as much as a film. That big Superbowl spot is spendy. So take that into account when judging a film’s success. Hitting $100 million isn’t the same as it once was.

All dollar amounts in the top 5 come from estimates based on ticket sales unless noted otherwise. Occasionally this article will be published when actual results come out, which is usually late Monday afternoon. For more about this and other ins and outs of movie tracking click here.
