Box Office Report

Kevin Hart and Will Ferrell went up against Jim Parsons and Parsons won. Which isn’t really a fair way of putting it. More that a family friendly DreamWorks movie beat out an R-rated movie when there has been a dearth of good kids flicks. Sure there was “Cinderella” but that doesn’t have a cutesy animated lead character.

“Home” was a definite success opening north of $50 million and the $33 million for “Get Hard” isn’t bad by any means. “Get Hard” is a top 3 all time opening for Ferrell and number 2 for Hart who has been in a ton of movies lately. However, “Get Hard” will likely drop quickly next weekend up against “Furious 7” while “Home” will continue to be the best pick for kids.

Both “Cinderella” and “Insurgent” took significant drops but are still successful, with “Cinderella” nearing $150 million and “Insurgent” over $85 million. There was also a huge jump from new horror flick “It Follows” which moved from #19 to #5, it added over 1,100 theaters and has been getting good reviews. Next week just brings “Furious 7” so there shouldn’t be much change.

A quick note on budgets and dollar figures:
Films making back their budgets is a good sign, but that is just the money to film. It doesn’t include distribution and marketing. Marketing can cost as much as a film. That big Superbowl spot is spendy. So take that into account when judging a film’s success. Hitting $100 million isn’t the same as it once was.

All dollar amounts in the top 5 come from estimates based on ticket sales unless noted otherwise. Occasionally this article will be published when actual results come out, which is usually late Monday afternoon. For more about this and other ins and outs of movie tracking click here.
