Box Office Report

With a continued strong performance outside the domestic market, “Furious 7” became one of three movies ever to make $1 billion overseas. Joining the likes of “Avatar” and “Titanic” Furious is king right now. But it’s has had 4 weeks atop the US market and that is set to end on Friday with the release of Ultron. Furious has held the top spot the longest since “The Hunger Games” way back in 2012.

“Avengers: Age of Ultron” is also already set up to knock down “Furious 7” hard. Ultron is the second best premiere in South Korea, the biggest superhero flick every in the UK and just killing it all over the world. Guess that’s a good sign for us Yanks come Friday.

In other news, Paul Blart stayed in second place and is on pace to make about $70 million while newcomer “The Age Adaline” brought in a huge female audience and about $13 million. Bringing up the bottom with a huge drop was, Unfriended. If you wonder why it fell so hard, you can read our review here

A quick note on budgets and dollar figures:
Films making back their budgets is a good sign, but that is just the money to film. It doesn’t include distribution and marketing. Marketing can cost as much as a film. That big Superbowl spot is spendy. So take that into account when judging a film’s success. Hitting $100 million isn’t the same as it once was.

All dollar amounts in the top 5 come from estimates based on ticket sales unless noted otherwise. Occasionally this article will be published when actual results come out, which is usually late Monday afternoon. For more about this and other ins and outs of movie tracking click here.
