Box Office Report

“Avengers: Age of Ultron” couldn’t quite match its predecessor, missing the mark by $16 million, they will have to settle with second biggest debut. Which really isn’t bad at all, in fact Ultron set at least one record, earning 85% of the Top 12 at the box office.

Ultron got a lot of love but just not the same amount as the first Avengers. However, that movie was a culmination of events and Ultron may be suffering from superhero fatigue, we all know Joss is. It also had to go up against the Kentucky Derby, Game 7 of some NBA playoffs, and a huge boxing match. They may have taken a little bit of the Saturday box office.

Overseas, Ultron is still kicking ass. It has taken in $439 million overseas and with 2 weeks in theaters has made over $600 million worldwide. So not hitting the first Avengers mark really isn’t slowing this thing down.

Everything else in theaters suffered from Ultron. “Furious 7” took a massive hit but is resting happily in second place and at $331 million total domestic. Ultron also won’t see much fight from anything else until the 15th when “Mad Max: Fury Road” hits theaters.

A quick note on budgets and dollar figures:
Films making back their budgets is a good sign, but that is just the money to film. It doesn’t include distribution and marketing. Marketing can cost as much as a film. That big Superbowl spot is spendy. So take that into account when judging a film’s success. Hitting $100 million isn’t the same as it once was.

All dollar amounts in the top 5 come from estimates based on ticket sales unless noted otherwise. Occasionally this article will be published when actual results come out, which is usually late Monday afternoon. For more about this and other ins and outs of movie tracking click here.
