Box Office Report

Our reviewers really enjoyed “Mr. Peabody & Sherman” (serious review and satire review) but it looks like the “300” sequel “300: Rise of an Empire” was the weekend winner. Peabody may have more lasting power as it got better reviews and LEGO is dropping. The big news over the weekend is that the new Wes Anderson film “The Grand Budapest Hotel” made $800,000 while showing at just 4 theaters. That is just crazy! I’m excited to see what happens when it hits wide release.

  1. 300: Rise of An Empire: With huge 3D ticket sales it hit $45.05 million. Expect it to drop significantly next week.
  2. Mr. Peabody & Sherman: $32.5 million. Not a great start but decent reviews will help.
  3. Non-Stop: A 47% drop to $15.3 million.
  4. The LEGO Movie: Also with a 47% drop Lego is down to $11 million and closing into $230 million domestic.
  5. Son of God: With a 61% drop people may have figured out this was on TV last year, $10 million.

Next week “Need For Speed” opens and a few films will hit limited release, the big hit will be March 21 when “Divergent” and “Muppets Most Wanted” open.
