Box Office Report

It was close but “Jurassic World” barely missed out on adding another record to its already lengthy list. Had they made a few more million they would have beaten “The Avengers” for the best second weekend. “Jurassic World” still should add another record when it hits $1 Billion later this week. “Furious 7” hit the mark in 17 days but Jurassic should get there in less. Currently it sits around $980 million, and had a smaller than average 51% drop off from opening weekend.

Also setting records is Pixar’s “Inside Out,” it has become the top all time opening of an original (no sequels, no adapted from a ___) beating out “Avatar” for the top spot. It has been well reviewed, you can find ours here, and should continue to hold strongly over the next few weeks.

A quick note on budgets and dollar figures:
Films making back their budgets is a good sign, but that is just the money to film. It doesn’t include distribution and marketing. Marketing can cost as much as a film. That big Superbowl spot is spendy. So take that into account when judging a film’s success. Hitting $100 million isn’t the same as it once was.

All dollar amounts in the top 5 come from estimates based on ticket sales unless noted otherwise. Occasionally this article will be published when actual results come out, which is usually late Monday afternoon. For more about this and other ins and outs of movie tracking click here.
