Box Office Report

Once again, surprising no one, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” blew apart the box office. Seriously, this is just getting silly. In 2 weeks it has already made over $540 million. Its second-weekend gross was $153 million, that is just insane. It’s already hit $1 Billion worldwide and has yet to open in China. There are some cool charts over at boxofficemojo.com that have all kinds of breakdowns of TFA vs other huge films like “Avatar” and “Titanic.”

I think as a kind of bonus from people needing to see something else, “Daddy’s Home” actually did pretty well bringing in just shy of $40 million. The latest David O. Russell film, “Joy”, did about what all his films starring all the same people did, around $17.5 million.

A quick note on budgets and dollar figures:
Films making back their budgets is a good sign, but that is just the money to film. It doesn’t include distribution and marketing. Marketing can cost as much as a film. That big Superbowl spot is spendy. So take that into account when judging a film’s success. Hitting $100 million isn’t the same as it once was.

All dollar amounts in the top 5 come from estimates based on ticket sales unless noted otherwise. Occasionally this article will be published when actual results come out, which is usually late Monday afternoon. For more about this and other ins and outs of movie tracking click here.
