With 4 new films opening in the top ten there is only 1 success story. “Ride Along” broke the record for January openings with $40.2 million, edging out “Cloverfield” by about $100k. Kevin Hart and Ice Cube brought in the crowds and the audience actually skewed female at about 57 percent. “Ride Along” also got a CinemaScore of A so it will carry on that success for a few more weekends. Surprisingly “Nut Job” earned $20.5 million which was enough for 3rd place. With no other family films outside of “Frozen” I figure they just went with their only option. I think once “The Lego Movie” hits “Nut Job” will vanish from the charts.
- Ride Along: Record breaking $40.2 million, expect this one to hold on for a while.
- Lone Survivor: Solid word of mouth kept last weeks winner at #2 and brought in $22.1 million.
- Nut Job: Just $2 million shy of #2 this one brought in $20.5 but I don’t see it sticking around.
- Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit: I’m sad about this one, I used to read lots of Clancy. $17.2 million for Chris Pine’s Jack Ryan just isn’t going to cut it and I think it’ll be awhile before they try Ryan titles again.
- Frozen: Still hanging on, over $330 million domestic gross. It pulled $11.9 million after being open for 2 months.
We won’t be getting much until February, next week the only wide release is “I, Frankenstein.”
