TV: ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ Welcomes Deathlok and Lorelei

The guest list on ABC’s “Agents of SHIELD” keeps getting longer—which is a very good thing. After announcing that Bill Paxton and Jaimie Alexander would be showing up to lend their talents to Marvel’s team of covert agents, Deadline Hollywood has confirmed that fans of the show can expect an appearance by two characters pulled directly from Marvel Comics.

The first of these appearances will happen alongside Jaimie Alexander’s reprisal of Sif from the “Thor” films. Apparently, the Asgardian villain Lorelai will be accompanying Sif to the realm of Midgard, presumably to rough things up for SHIELD. Lorelei will be played by Elena Satine, who you might know as Judi Silver from Starz’s original series “Magic City.”According to the Marvel Universe Wiki, Lorelei is an Asgardian sorceress who Loki manipulates into seducing Thor. It’s doubtful that the show will pursue this storyline, however. My money’s on a good, old-fashioned Asgardian brawl between Sif and Lorelei, which inevitably catches SHIELD’s attention.

As exciting as it is to hear about more Asgardians coming to “Agents of SHIELD,” it’s the information behind adding the character of Deathlok to the show that piqued my interest. If you’ve been following along this season, you know that Mike Peterson (J. August Richards), the Centipede-fueled villain turned SHIELD agent, was horribly injured in a helicopter crash. Admittedly, I hadn’t given much thought to Peterson—until it was revealed that he would become Deathlok on the show. I’ve always been a bit of a Deahtlok fan—he looks like a cross between a zombie and a cyborg, which is a combination that has always appealed to me.

Since “Agents of SHIELD” is at its best when it is functioning as a supplement to the cinematic Marvel universe, this news makes me optimistic for the show’s future. It’s a great avenue to begin showcasing some lesser-known Marvel characters.  The show returns on Feb. 4th–with an extra special cameo from Stan Lee!
