Tracking down that Star Wars #1 Gamestop exclusive cover variant

Stephane Roux’s variant cover to Brian Wood’s Star Wars #1 will be a point redemption prize to Gamestop’s PowerUp members.

Even before the first issue of new Star Wars comic, written by Brian Wood, sold out, there were already several cover variants in the works: the regular cover by Alex Ross, the pencil draft cover of Alex Ross’s painting, and the Hastings comics exclusive cover, by Carlos D’Anda:

We also knew that there was going to be a cover variant exclusive to Gamestop, though when the date of release came for #1, Gamestop stores didn’t have them and didn’t know anything about them. Artist Stéphane Roux released the image (on the left) back in the end of January, and now the details have come out on how to earn it as a member of Gamestop’s PowerUp reward program, for only 9,920 points. Star Wars Beyond the Films points out that there’s only 3,000 copies available.

Of course, if you just want any copy of Star Wars #1, check your local comic book stores – chances are that the first printings from January 9 (Alex Ross cover with all the title text) are long, long gone, the second printings (February 6) may be around or not (Alex Ross cover, no title text), or wait for the third printing, out February 27, with the Alex Ross cover art, and only the Star Wars title (no other text).
