Last night Nickelodeon aired a behind the scenes special of the upcoming “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” movie directed by Jonathan Liebesman. My expectations for the flick have gone up and down significantly over the last few months. It seems that each new teaser, photo, trailer, or announcement has altered my feelings and this was no different. In a nutshell (pun unintended but taken) my worries are gone and I can’t wait to see it.
As I said in August last year, We as geeks have a choice to make, to be overly critical of the movies and television we are given or to appreciate them for what they are. I’m not saying don’t be critical at all, just don’t miss the forest for the scientifically improbable-mutated-sentient-ectotherms.
I for one am glad that this thing I loved as a child is still relevant, is still appreciated, and is still around. I would rather have a high budget live action movie with some flaws than no movie at all.
It’s a great time to be a geek everybody, let’s not ruin it for ourselves.
That sentiment is as true now as it was then. It’s easy to forget how excited I am to be getting a new Turtles flick, focus on the negatives, and ruin it for myself.
That being said, last nights “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Inside the Action” reignited my excitement and my faith in the project. While it may look over the top at times, it’s to be expected with the subject material and with all things considered, it looks like a hell of a lot of fun.
This short behind the scenes look (total run time is approximately 18 minutes) shows us some of the technology and choreography used to bring our favorite turtles to life. It also gives you a sneak preview of the movie by way of a mountainous car chase scene.
The more I see the Turtles, the more I like the design. The personalities seem to all be there, and they do some new and exciting things with the weapons and gear. Unless this special showcases the only good scene in the movie, this might just end up being the best turtles movie to date, I guess we’ll all have to wait and see. My hopes are high.
