Before I even talk about the season premier of Smallville let me get one thing out of the way. I love this show! Yes its not particularly well acted or written, for the most part, but these last couple of seasons in particular have been flat out fun. Now I believe his show did flounder for a while, but has completely turned around with the addition of more and more comic elements in it. Now for those of you bitching that usual fanboy bitch of “That didn’t happen in the comics,” all I have to say to you is get over it. They’ve taken ideas, stories, and characters from the comics and made their own twist on it. Over the past couple of seasons we’ve seen the JSA, Zatanna, Checkmate, Amanda Waller, The Suicide Squad, Green Arrow, Black Canary, Doomsday, Brainiac, Parasite, Toyman, Cadmus Labs, Supergirl, Metallo, and the friggin Legion of Super-Heroes! As a huge DC fan it has been just straight fun for me! The season premier for the final season was a week ago and I wanted to share my thoughts, but there are going to be lots of spoilers so enjoy this picture of Laura Vandervoort returning in this weeks episode as  Supergirl, in costume, as a buffer in case you don’t want to be spoiled.

So we left last season with Clark falling powerless to his death with the blue kryptonite dagger plunged in his chest and we waste no time learning his fate. He hits the ground and dies. But after having a near death experience with Jor-El and learning of an “evil” that is coming Lois pulls the dagger out of his chest and he of course is healed. She hides before he gets up and sees him heal and speed away, now knowing that the blur is Clark Kent.

Tess, was last seen lying in a hospital bed with her face all burned up from Zod using his heat vision. We also saw a creepy old lady walk into her room to do something to her. This season is bringing in the Jack Kirby Fourth World stuff so that old lady can’t be anybody but Granny Goodness. This season Tess wakes up in Cadmus Labs with some kind of funky goo on her that when she peels off reveals that her face is all healed. She then discovers a bunch of clone bodies Lex was working on before he died that he was going to use to heal himself. Most are deformed, but there are two that stand out. One is a child, which Tess is seen taking care of at the end of the episode. And the other is a very evil Lex that is about 10 years older than he was when he died. Evil Lex kills all the clones in the lab and escapes.

On the Ollie and Chloe side of things Ollie got ambushed by what we thought were Kandorians, but ended up being someone else. We don’t know who, but we see them in this episode beating up and torturing Ollie. Chloe goes to the Helmet of Fate to get answers and passes out after putting it on. Later Ollie’s captors let him go, but it looks as if its an exchange for Chloe.

Evil Lex ties Lois up in the same field that Clark was tied up in in the very first episode. Then sets fire to the field and leaves. He has a showdown with Clark in which Clark almost snaps his neck. Lex reveals that he is dying anyway so it wouldn’t matter. He then gives Clark a choice, save the girl he loves (in the burning field), or save the masses in metropolis as he has planted a bomb on the giant globe on the Daily Planet. Clark of course manages to save both.

We end with a heartfelt scene where Jonathan Kent comes back as a spirit, vision, whatever I don’t care,  to give an inspirational speech to Clark in only the way that Pa Kent can do it.

But wait there’s more! Remember when I said that they were bringing in Jack Kirby’s Fourth World characters in this season? Well the big baddie for the final season of Smallville is DARKSEID!

All in all I think the final season kicked off with a bang!

Meanwhile, Lois (Erica Durance) confronts Gordon Godfrey (guest star Michael Daingerfield), a shock jock radio DJ who has been crusading against heroes, after he threatens the Green Arrow (Justin Hartley). However, after Godfrey is possessed by the dark force, he takes Lois hostage and Clark and Kara have to come to her rescue. Mairzee Almas directed the episode written by Ann Cofell Saunders (#3X6003).
