Everyone’s favorite merc with a mouth is back in his own new ongoing series written by Daniel Way (Wolverine: Origins, Daredevil: Greatest Hits, and Ghost Rider) and he is putting himself smack dab in the middle of Secret Invasion!

Skrulls invade in the middle of America’s favorite past time advising all to surrender. Luckily, one mascot-disguised Weapon X alumni has a different idea and takes it to the lone-ship Skrull take over single handedly; all the while having an argument with himself about the effectiveness and lack of his so-called “plan”, and battling hallucinations of grandeur.

Daniel Way has done a fantastic job with nailing what makes Deadpool so great: the mix of action and humor. Reading good Deadpool issues for me has always been like watching a great action-comedy movie. Deadpool is essentially kicking some ass while your laughing yours off. I’d imagine that Deadpool is probably one of the hardest characters to write for, he’s paranoid, schizophrenic, suffers from dellusions of grandeur, and can’t seem to stop running his mouth, and if a writer can’t get all these aspects exactly right, something gets lost in the character. Way touches on all these aspects perfectly, for instance, at one point in this ish Deadpool is parachuting down and on the ground is a bunch of dead Skrulls, as he’s parachuting down he’s arguing with himself about his “plan” and envisioning all those dead Skrulls as conquered video game henchmen, each earning him some points.

As much as I loved the Deadpool/Cable ongoing series, I am happy to see Deadpool back in his own title. He’s just so unique to the Marvel Universe and brings a different flavor of ‘hero’ to a sometimes repetitive roster. As a reader you are always questioning his motives and where he is taking his notoriously convoluted ‘plans’ to defeat those who confront him, and some how Deadpool always ends up on the right side of things, well, mostly.

This first issue was great and I highly recommend anyone who has gotten a taste of Deadpool in the past and liked what they read to start picking this title up. This one ends with a typical Deadpool-style cliff hanger that has me anxious for issue #2! Deadpool #1 hits shelves this Wednesday and you should definately check it out!
