REVIEW: Action Comics #872

CyberNev talks New Krypton.

Written by Geoff Johns

Art by Pete Woods

This issue of Action Comics continues the ongoing New Krypton crossover. I usually don’t read crossovers, but the New Krypton one has grabbed me because it’s actually built around a very interesting concept-1000 Kryptonians running around wild, Kara Zor-El’s parents returned, oh Earth is so screwed-and it tied in with Supergirl, which I’m reading, so I pretty much had to follow it.

Also, I love the artists involved-Renato Guedes and Pete Woods are my favorite artists ever. I love their art so much I want to marry it.

The crossover has been high quality so far, and this issue continues to deliver. Supergirl’s mother seems to very different ideologically from the Superman family…I’m not sure if this was a result of the bolt of Kryptonite poisoning that struck her in Supergirl earlier or just her personality-either way, it’s very interesting to see develop.

I find Superman’s reaction to the situation to be overly calm. Also, some things seemed very “already done”- Luthor’s speech to Braniac, I already saw it in the Justice League cartoon. Reactron’s Gold Kryptonite heart? Well, okay. I suppose it’s different because it’s GOLD Kryptonite.

The return of the Creature Commandos? I know nothing about them, but they LOOK interesting, so it’s cool.

The end of the issue promises to have devastating consequences for Kara and more conflict for Superman, and I’m looking forward to the next part. And I never say that about crossovers. UNTIL NOW.

This may not be Pete Woods best work (perhaps he was rushed?) but it’s still awesome, because Pete Woods is great at giving characters a sense of realism and fun at the same time.

So good on you, Superman franchise. You actually got me interested. Bat franchise, take note.
