It would appear that Stan Lee’s guest appearance on this week’s upcoming episode of “Agents of SHIELD” has opened the door for Marvel to add a few other guest roles as the show progresses. Marvel.com has confirmed two guest spots for future episodes; both of which present interesting possibilities for the show’s future.
Jaimie Alexander will be showing up to reprise her role as Sif, Thor’s Asgardian sister-at-arms, and Bill Paxton will lend his talents to SHIELD as Agent John Garrett, a character who first appeared in Frank Miller’s comic book series “Elektra Assassin.” Let’s take a moment and discuss those interesting possibilities that I mentioned, shall we?
Having Sif appear on the show feels important somehow. Based on Alexander’s performance and the way in which she generally kicks ass, she’s become one of the most popular supporting characters in the “Thor” film series. It also signifies the fact that the realm of Asgard will begin to play a more active role in the evolving world of SHIELD. Since one of the best episodes of the season involved rogue Asgardians, this could definitely take the show into some interesting places.
The decision to bring a little known Marvel character like John Garrett to the small screen is a mysterious one. It’s doubtful that the show will pursue Garrett’s original storyline, which involved his getting fatally injured by Elektra only to have SHIELD revive him as a cyborg. Since the Daredevil and Elektra films left their respective franchises a barren wasteland, it’s doubtful that they’ll stick to the canon with him. However, the part about him almost getting killed only to be revived by SHIELD sounds a bit familiar—Agent Coulson, anyone? It could be interesting to see if Paxton’s Garrett will be a previous candidate for whatever procedure Coulson was subjected to. Though it’s more likely that he’ll just be a SHIELD agent named John Garrett, the fact that marvel.com took the time to drop his name hints at some larger significance.
A new episode of “Agents of SHIELD” airs this Tuesday at 8/7 central, and since the father of Marvel comics will be making an appearance, it’s kind of a big deal.
