Digital Comics Picks for 1/11/12

Not only was last week not as big as I’d like it to be digitally, it really made me miss going into the shop weekly. I’m going to resist fighting that urge because magazines piling up are ridiculous and I don’t want to be stuck in a Collyer’s Mansion of comic books and newspapers. If the books don’t come out I can’t read them! Now I have to wait for a trade or Hardcover collection for Batman Leviathan Strikes and the spur of the moment picks that looked good in Previews have translated into a NO SALE for the publishers and digital distributors. Isn’t 2012 the last year ever? Maybe you should adjust your business model accordingly. And now for the Picks:

DARK HORSE COMICS

Has so many strong books out this week I’m going to continue to hold off on the Conan/Krull world and wait for the bundles.

LOBSTER JOHNSON THE BURNING HAND #1
If you love the Hellboy and B.P.R.D. world you know what this is all about, if not it will probably be a good place to start, I jumped in with THE IRON PROMETHUS and didn’t miss a thing.

STAR WARS KNIGHTS OF THE OLD REPUBLIC WAR #1
KOTOR is back with another series, and war.
Also two great horror books THE OCCULTIST #3 and THE STRAIN #2.

DC COMICS

BATMAN AND ROBIN #5
Admittedly this book isn’t for everybody but I’ve been enjoying it despite it not really being a ‘New 52’ book.

DEATHSTROKE #5
If you don’t know anything about Slade Wilson the mercenary (who debuted 10 years before Wade Wilson the mercenary over at Marvel) check this book out. Action Violence and humor!
I was asked last week why I don’t pick any Vertigo books and the answer is simple. Not all of their books are available digitally the same day as print and I don’t expect this to change. They are however catching up and there are quite a few off beat titles to read here.

IDW PUBLISHING

This is the last week IDW will get a nod in the column for a while. I’m sticking with the Joe books but everything else I’ve tried including Transformers and Dungeons and Dragons has fallen short of my expectations.

COBRA ANNUAL 2012 ORIGIN OF COBRA COMMANDER #1 (this is a maybe at 7.99)
GI JOE A REAL AMERICAN HERO #174

IMAGE COMICS

Wants all my money this week but they’re only getting two books out of me
PIGS #5
And
THE STRANGE TALENT OF LOUTHER STRODE #4

As usually Marvel gets skipped and if you see that Steve Jobs bio comic avoid it, I hear the Walter Isaacson autobiography is amazing.

That’s it this week. I have a hard time figuring out what’s going to be available digitally and where to find it. If you’ve got any tips about sales feel free to drop me a line: ken at bigshinyrobot dot com
